After 4 consecutive semi final defeats in major tournaments it was good they laid that hoodoo  to rest against a team ranked no2 in the World.  Could have been a different story had Sweden scored with their first attack of the game. End to end stuff in the 1st half. After the 2nd goal there was only going to be one outcome.

I’ve enjoyed the occasional game of women’s football or rugby but it’s not on the same level is it? It’s the men’s games — same as basketball in America — that bring in the money at stadiums and viewers on tv channels. Why should we fund stuff that few people watch. They are clearly not equal, so please, let them stop bitching about ‘equality’.

If I wanted to be really hard-hat about this, I’d say men excel at physical strength, women excel at physical beauty (at least unless we go back to Ancient Greece, when men ‘excelled’ at both). 

Instead of women trying to look like men, if they really want to ‘compete’ they could emphasise their physical feminine attributes on camera a bit more. The society runs on male-female, not ‘cis’. And while I’m at it, Wimbledon was a much better behaved event, emphasising British values of gentility, decorum, politeness, taste, and sportsmanship (male and female) when women tennis players dressed as women, not as cross-country fucking runners.

Some very good points you have raised Marmalade  I read in one of yesterday's papers some sports writer was going overboard in his praise of the women's game saying the skill level was every bit as good as the mens game. Well I must be watching a different matches to him. Sure the games have been on the whole entertaining but skill wise I would say they are about 60% to 70% compared to the men, heading and tackling seems to be their downfall. I do hope the Lionesses go on to win the tournament tomorrow and if they do it will give the womens game a tremendous boost but somehow I can't see 60,000 fans flocking to see  Man Utd women play

Actually in 99% of cricket there is no men's cricket Women can and do play with the men even though women also have their own game
I've probably played against a dozen women - not a very high % its true and a few seasons ago Sussex played the womens English wicketkeeper in their 2nd XI "mens" side

 Serena Williams (possibly the best ever woman player and the closest to being physically equipped to play against elite men's players) was challenged to a match by the guy ranked 700 or something.
He won easily.

If England fail miserably in Qatar Beigmam would be a good option . A few months ago I would be optimistic about England's chances of winning the World Cup but recent results and performances have been poor. The wheels have come off big time

Whilst it is understandable to think about how a present top level woman's side would compete in the english pyramid I think the quesiton is wrong.

Women's football is a comparatively new game. The FA only unbanned regulated football 50 years ago. The pool of players and access to facilities (not least time) has always been smaller and more women have tended to leave the game as other worldly pressures come to pass.

Is it therefore more interesting to say where woudl a top level international womens team be competitive with a professional mans team? When Australia beat the Cook Islands by twenty or thirty in a world cup qualifier is it not unreasonable to think that a women's team would be a good match for them? The pools of players and access to facilities may be similar and therefore a better comparison.

Or slightly more abstract in which era would a present top level international womens team be competitive? You'd have to factor in today's refereeing standards which protect players a lot more. But how far would today's Englands womens team go against the teams that played in the FA Cup in 1871 or 1901 or 1931?  I reckon playing in a modern environment, with modern rules and modern equipment that they've made comparable progress in 50 years as to those who played the game since the FA was formed.

Well-trained, a man can run faster than a woman (VO2 max is higher) so women can’t compete with men in most physical sports on account of those factors.

Historically, a woman won the ancient Olympics for the first disguised as a man. It was a chariot race.

I believe Desiré Wilson became the only woman to win a Formula One race of any kind when she won at Brands Hatch in 1980. No reason women shouldn’t compete there.

 I used to play a lot of tennis. Played to quite a high standard and at the club I played for we had mixed teams. No woman played in the first two teams.
A lot of the women were County players but they couldn't compete at the top of men's amateur tennis.

And you mentioned well-trained. You have to remember the difference that Arsene Wenger brought into the British Game with the way players were prepared to play.

Ok lets reverse this a bit. If the Bury team that won the 1903 FA Cup got picked up in a passing TARDIS and were brought to play the  Chelsea Womens Team that won the last FA Cup - would they win? And would they win by more than the 6 goals that Bury team beat Derby by in the final.

I think the point abotu the impact of smaller player pools is most adequately shown by the standard of goalkeeping. Where it seems to be more of a lack of technical ability than stature - although stature is going to be especially pertinent.
