It’s sad how many so-called classic films have simply not stood the test of time.
A couple of nights ago I watched Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window. Needless to say Leonard Maltin gives it the four stars he always gives the “great” films from that era, and Rotten Tomatoes calls it a masterpiece and scores the reviews at 99% positive.
The concept is ingenious. The main set is clever. It's always nice to see good 'ol Jimmy Stewart, and Grace Kelly is quite easy on the eye. But God it's dull. No tension, no suspense, slow, badly paced.
And Psycho (which I also watched recently)? A just-about acceptable B-movie, if you like that kind of thing. By today’s standards, the murder in the shower is about as scary as being barked at by a dachshund, and the psychologist pontificating at the end is a hopelessly limp way to end the movie. Janet Leigh is quite easy on the eye, however.
Mind you, Casablanca is still pretty damn good. And that Ingrid Bergman is quite easy on the eye.
