Fashion for these kinds of dramas, inspired by Russia nuclear sabre rattling I think.

Recent Radio 4 wargame drama / documentary series about how difficult it would be for UK to respond to direct Russian aggression featuring Ben Wallace (ex Tory defence bod).

Rulers Of Fortune. Netflix. 8 episodes. Very good, recommended. Set in modern day Brazil. Gritty crime drama. Great acting, nice locations, decent story.

Stars Andre Lamoglia. Subtitles.

Housevof Dynamite on Netflix - about someone firing a missile at the US and all their defensive measures failing. The same time period from different people's perspectives.

Arizona (2018). Struggling realtor gets taken hostage by a disgruntled homeowner. Billed as a comedy, Arizona is totally devoid of laughs, poorly written and acted and best consigned to the cinematic desert where it belongs.  D

Electra (2024). A pair of con artists attempt to steal a painting from a fading music star. Filmed principally in a 15th century Palazzo, Electra looks absolutely stunning but the story although quirkily engaging somewhat pales in comparison.  C

Dead Of Winter (2025). Lonely widow attempts to rescue a young girl who has been kidnapped. If there were Oscars for best mediocre film of the year then DOW would win hands down, no doubt about it. Starring Emma Thompson, who's really slumming it by appearing in this load of old tripe.  D

Last Samurai Standing - Netflix
6 part tv show. Watched first 2 episodes and it’s really good so far. Big budget by the look of it. Plenty of fights. Body parts everywhere. But there’s a story to be had too. Worth a watch if your into this kind of thing.

I thought the first two john Wick films were ok, the fourth was just 2 hours of endless fights and killing which became repetative and booring.

+1
Totally devoid of any genuine acting or dialogue.

What is can't understand is how a film full of unrealistic CGI generated fight scenes sells tickets. I can only think it appeals to people who play a lot of computer games  :unknown:

Just finished watching The Beast in Me on Netflix.

Great screenplay, excellent acting, sharp dialogue.

Unpredictable and not too many red herrings, as you get with other series, e.g. Harlan Coban stuff.

I personally enjoyed all the Wick movies. The appeal being that the fights are done in camera and very little if any cgi. You can watch Keanu Reeves training for them on YouTube along with the extensive weapons training he took.

I much prefered the Equalizer films starring Denzil Washington. The violence is more subtle and more of a story line but with a fourth and fifth film in the pipeline they are already flogging this franchise to death ( excuse the pun ) They should have ended it after the third film.

I bought tickets before the reviews came out which is unlike me but the trailer looked close to the book, and I know Edgar Wright is a nerd so I had faith he would do a good job. I was very disappointed. There were some bits that were good, but the sharp snaps between the deep story elements and action scenes just messed everything up. I think Marvel movies have had a bad impact on cinema as every big budget film has to be a marvel film in some way or another.

I think a directors cut could make the film so much better, but I doubt they will bother. The 1987 film is a much better film.

Good review… I especially related to the quote about “A sinister corporation willing to lie and kill and sacrifice their own people all in the name of money and ratings.”  The BBC down to a Tee [except for maybe the kill (as far as we know) part].

Speaking of which, I recently watched The Killer’s Game with Dave Bautista (I can only see and hear him as Drax these days) - an action thriller comedy with some great stunt work. I thought it was very entertaining and actually a good film, especially if you’re a fan of the genre. Even my better half liked it, and she usually hates action flicks with a passion.  Worth a watch IMO.

Blind Alley (2011). Young woman finds herself trapped in a launderette, with a killer lurking outside. Spanish horror/thriller that starts off promisingly, before going totally off the rails with a silly plot twist that never feels remotely believable, the visuals are impressive though.  C-

The Piano Accident (2025). Famous social media star retreats to an isolated chalet after a mysterious accident, she is then blackmailed by a determined journalist. French comedy that's mean, spiteful and downright nasty at times but very funny if you like your humour served as dark as possible, an apt film for the times we live in.  A-

If I Had Legs, I'd Kick You (2025). A mother with a sick child battles her inner demons, be they real or imaginary ones. Muddled psychological drama that infuriates more than it entertains, Rose Byrne in the lead role gives an Oscar worthy performance and is the main reason I watched this film to the very end.  C+

Anyone seen the documentary/film The Age of Disclosure?

I decided to check it out after seeing the director interviewed on Joe Rogan. It's about the US government admitting to finding UAP's (aka UFO's) and "Non-Human Biologicals".

I thought it was another conspiracy theory show, like some of those shown on he minor channels late at night. However, as the documentary progresses it becomes very convincing. Lot's of famous senators and senior government/military officials speaking on the record.

Looks like they are among us after all!

I'm 2 seasons into the X-Files inspired Sci-Fi TV show Fringe.

I don't know how I missed it when it originally came out in 2008, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it now. All sorts of ridiculous pseudo-science that it manages to portray in a engaging manner. No doubt due to the excellent portrayal of a mad scientist character called Walter Bishop, played by John Noble. I don't know how I've never seen him on anything before, he's an absolutely brilliant actor, somehow managing to be equal parts commandingly arrogant and childishly vulnerable.

Worth a watch if you are into Sci-Fi.

I’ve watched all of Fringe twice so far.  Great sci-fi series IMO.  It gets a lot more complicated as the series progresses, but definitely worth sticking with.

John Noble probably most recognisable for playing Boromir and Faramir’s deranged father, Denethor Steward of Gondor, in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy.  Good actor.

Sir Henry at Rawlinson End
Ultra obscure British comedy about a British alcoholic eccentric out of touch with the modern world. It Was written by Vivian Stanshall and is shot in monochrome and sepia tinted. It came out in 1990 and there's no way it could have made any money at box office. It's fucking great.

Sounds like a mate of mine.

He called me a few nights ago for a "chat", which consisted of him rambling on about utterly bizarre subjects, on which I have no interest.

I lost 30 minutes of my life that I'll never get back. But I did learn how long it takes to drive from Malmo to Copenhagen  :unknown:

That Ruth Wilson in the current version of Jane Eyre looks a bit of alright, can see why Mr Rochester fell for her amazing that she was in the 2006 version and his dark materiels and co-starred with Luther as that reaseacher side kink!..

I have mixed feelings about her. She has a top lip that looks like she's about to throw a sulk any moment.

The Hack, ITV

Apologies if already mentioned.

Series dealing with the News of World (and others) hacking scandal.  I thought it was excellent and done in a very watchable and engaging style.

A lot of breaking the 4th wall which I often do not like but works really well here.

Great film. There's a quote from it that I still use today. "If I had all the money I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink". Sometimes I substitute "punting" for "drink" though

So it is, which makes more sense. Even for 1980 it would have been way out there. Feels more like a Spike Milligan sketch from the 60s.
