So Colombia v Switzerland kicks off soon
This game has been dubbed " Charlie verses the chocolate factory  :D

Good game for the neutrals 🤷🏼

The Colombians still call them ‘Linesman’

Oh come on. It’s too hot to think of anything better.

No wait a minute. That’s not true………… I’ve got A/C  :yahoo:

Maybe an Egypt free kick or pen not given before Argentina got the winner ?

The calls all going against them a bit strange maybe some unconscious bias ?

FIFA have wanted both Messi & CR7 in the WC along with the USA as far into the competition as possible
FIFA bent the rules to allow CR7 not to miss the 1st two matches so a success
Less successful re the US team

BBC all over, advice you don't really need.

After our fantastic display against Mexico I think we should be confident of beating Norway.
Bellingham was arguably the man of the match, but Gordon wasn't far behind.
Let's hope they can reproduce that form on Saturday.
Surely Dan Burn should start, to stifle the threat from Haaland.
According to TNT sports. Burns has played 6 matches against Haaland and impressively only aloud him to score once.

A good call on the defensive set up matching up physically
BTW its BDB & he doesn't mind getting stuck in
He blocked a banger of a shot from close range & isn't one of those players to turn away he'd rather get hit in the face than let the oppo score  :hi:

Egypt were Robbed yesterday, Clear Favouritism yesterday.
What is it with Argentina and Luck?
I still remember what Maradona done in 86 and Now Messi gets away with dangerous fouls.

I hope they lose to Switzerland

I just did not see any difference between the foul given to Argentina that denied Egypt a goal and the foul NOT given to Egypt when Salah was tripped up that could have possibly resulted in a possible penalty 🤷🏼

I don't suppose the concern about Argentina and refereeing decisions could possibly be motivated by the consideration that Egypt were perceived as an easier draw for England.
Not like England to count their chickens .
I'm surprised they haven't already been ruminating whether they prefer Spain or France in the final.

Looking at these things through your Scottish goggles has left you somewhat blinkered. I know you're not used to knockout football but you can't really look more than one game ahead. Argentina's last 2 games were supposedly against easy oppo and they got taken to the wire both times. As far as Argentina is concerned, I wanted them to lose for a number of reasons: supporting the underdog, France 98...
More broadly, it does feel like this World Cup is being influenced by more than just what happens on the pitch.

In today's green focused world did the Scootish team plane share to head home with Holland & Germany [these countries get on so well] ?

Well this is the thing that Infantino has really fucked up and lost all credibility so now every and any decision will be criticised and scrutinised with an allegation of some sort of fix whether it is or not.

I'm used to knockout football.
I'm maybe not emotionally invested but I appreciate the spectacle.
Can't stand the commentators in general though.
Especially McCoist funnily enough
I'm already hearing that England have far better players than Norway and will dominate.
Let's see.
I'm predicting they'll park the bus because England always look a bit devoid of creativity when they do dominate possession.
Hence their reliance on setplays .

You dont stop Haaland by out muscling him - although shrinking violets need not apply - you stop him by cutting out his service so Gordon and Saka will be vital defensively

I expect a very difficult match against Norway and the defence is still lacking, at right back especially, will James be back?

I'm a bit surprised to read that you dislike McCoist. I like him, primarily because he's the only person in the world to use 'half a yard' as a ubiquitous measure, whether of speed, acceleration, space or distance. He can't go twenty minutes without saying it.

On the other hand if we win the bally thing we’ll never hear the end of it.  The triumphalism will go on for years.  And Sir Starmer will probably take the knee and insist on us having a bank holiday.

From today’s Times:  “Sir Keir Starmer plans to grant a bank holiday if England storm to victory in the World Cup.  Officials confirmed that the prime minister is seriously considering giving fans a day off work as one of his last acts in power.  He is due to leave No 10 on July 20, the day after the World Cup final in New Jersey. The day off would most likely be Friday, July 24.”

The report says that an additional bank holiday costs the economy £2.4 billion – though it's presumably more than that if it's “unexpected”  – and adds that there would be major implications for the NHS.  (It'd be a shame if you're an elderly person with a hip replacement scheduled for 24 July and England win the World Cup.  But shit happens.)

What a bunch of cnuts!
How much did that cost in favour money?

What do you think the punishment should have been, honestly?

One additional match on top of the automatic one match ban for a red card seems about right.

Agreed, the problem of course is the lack of any appeal avenue (unless you are DJT) and the question of whether it was 2 games worse in terms of opponent harm than Balogun - who was also sent off for serious foul play

So if we are accepting that Quansah's punishment for a reckless potential leg-breaker of a challenge is right then we're just arguing “but Balogun”, right?  In short, yes it is 2 games worse than Balogun.

The biggest issue with the Balogun decision is the horrific precedent set by not following normal FIFA disciplinary process.  Leading to people pointing to it and looking for leniency where it isn’t deserved.  IMO the Balogun red card was a wrong decision, as there was no actual foul play, but the referee's decision is final and it was given.  Overturning the automatic ban was also a wrong decision regardless of who asked for it.

If you watch the Balogun incident properly he doesn’t commit a foul at all, he is the player in possession, he has his back to goal and the Bosnian player challenges him from behind, causing Balogun to fall and stand on the Bosnian's leg in the process. It’s just an unfortunate incident in a contact sport.  That a red was given after a VAR review was quite remarkable.

So France march on the the semi finals brushing Morocco aside and strolling to a 2-0 win and that was after Mbappe missed a penalty

Morocco didn't offer anything but had looked quite impressive against some of their previous opponents, did they have a poor game last night or is it impossible to play well against France  :unknown:

Despite Morocco having 52% of possession they only had 5 shots Vs 22 for France and only 1 on target Vs 8

Spain or France next up for France

They haven't been behind yet so perhaps that's the only way they can be beaten if a team does actually go ahead and then some of the BIG names start arguing amongst themselves  :unknown:

I believe Spain are yet to conceed a goal so they haven't been behind either

The finit chance which Belgium had if they play well & are lucky Spain playing not the best & unlucky, has just evaporated

Absolutely
FIFA's nemesis is UEFA
A prime example being the Balogun debacle
FIFA keen to compress European involvement & expand with countries from other continents
Undoubtedly a success this WC however Infanticunt's interest is votes keeping him in the chair for another 4 years however long it is
Therefore Africa v South America for the final fits their quest perfectly
Well done FIFA

I know this is getting slightly ahead and IMO Spain are / were favourites for this game regardless but the winner plays France.

So here's my thinking that logically i'd want Belgium to win as it means Spain the better team is taken out of the fight however I also think that Spain do have a chance at beating France whereas Belgium don't  :unknown:

Following that logic on then if England were to make the final i'd say England stand a better chance of beating Spain than France  :unknown:

I concurr
I'm thinking that England can beat Norway & for a short time it looked like the final was opening up with Egypt
Until the officials & VAR stepped in as much as they were able to snuff this out
Beating Spain maybe
Beating France no chance
Especially without TAA

A lot of talk before the start of the WC about Lamine Yamal who is undoubtedly a great talent but he's failed to shine at this WC so far, I think many were expecting him to announce himself on the big stage like a young Pele but it just hasn't happened (So far).

The older stalwarts have however all been banging the goals in for fun
MBappe 8
Messi 8
Haaland 7
Kane 6
Yamal 1

Famous last words - You don't win anything with kids, now watch him pop up and get the winner  :D

Along with many other I hate these stuttering run ups to penalties, if you score fair enough but you also risk looking a right twat when you miss or as I always scream at the TV "Just hit the fucker"

Anyway the stats tend to bear out that the stuttering run up isn't a good option and bear in mind the penalties taken in open play are being taken by the best penalty takers that a team has

"Stutter" penalties have a conversion rate of 57% while normally taken penalties have a conversion rate of 68% (In open play not shootouts) and even that's low by historical standards

Realistically i'd think that the No.1 penalty takers would be wanting an average of 80% conversion  :unknown:
