Increasing your protein intake stops you feeling hungry. There's many good sources of protein including turkey slices, protein yoghurts and baked beans. Protein helps you build muscle mass too.

Are high in fat, try not to over indulge.

The body uses 20–30% of the calories from protein to digest and metabolise it. This is known as the thermic effect of food (TEF).
In order to build muscle you will need the stimulus; resistance training is the primary exercise that stimulates muscle growth.

I’m not sure if swimming helps that much in losing weight but it makes you feel better.
All exercise is good for you. I do very little gym unless I am losing upper body toning (long periods at desk) The GF has (and is obsessed with horses) so I ride when we are at her parents farm and it is surprising how fit it keeps you. Some running but find it boring but enjoy swimming so built a pool at home.

Swimming is ok but it’s avoiding all the other lane swimmers that gets on my nerves.
Gym membership isn’t worth it,just put the trainers on and go walking or running.

Another 2 pounds lost this week so 9 pounds lost in four weeks.

Going to up my swimming next week. I’m not sure if swimming helps that much in losing weight but it makes you feel better.

Good effort OP! Keep it up, it's all about consistency and winning those small daily battles that will really benefit you in your weight loss journey. Swimming asbolutely does help with losing weight as it's a full body workout, so keep at it.

I'd replace crisps as such with nuts and if I ever felt the urge to eat outside of my eating window I'd down half a litre of water.. fills you up and end up losing the urge to eat lol

For sure I don’t make much of a secret about it, and I have only a few family members now and they are not in this country. The question I would ask is ‘why were you reading a punting forum’

Forget about doing cardio style, circuit training where you run extensively and sweat buckets. Yes you might lose weight quickly but you will lose muscle and your metabolism will become slower in the long-term. Likely to yo-yo diet and put weight back on. It's much more effective to build muscle and you will build a faster metabolism in the long-term.

You should try strength training:
2-3 times a week - Mon, Wed, Friday
45mins -1 hour sessions

Just focus on these main exercises 5 sets x 5 reps each with 2-3 mins rest in between sets. Key is take long rest periods (You don't want to be sweating it's not a cardio workout)

1)Barbell back squat
2)Deadlift
3)Bench press
4)Overhead press
5)Pull-ups

Daily walks getting around 5-10k steps a day, no heavy cardio. Goal is to build muscle (When you do too much cardio, it sends a signal to the body to lose muscle)

Don't waste your time using gym machines doing 3 sets of 10 reps etc. Also it's pivotal to up your protein intake (1gram of protein per bodyweight in Lbs). Would also recommend taking creatine daily. If you hit your protein intake daily along with the 2-3 days of strength per week over the course of 6-12 months. Your body will completely transform itself but you need to be very patient. It's very hard mentally because you won't see change in the first few months, you have to trust the process. But if you stick with it, your body will eventually become a fat-burning machine.

Well done Greek yoghurt is a good source of protein. When you build muscle your body will naturally use more calories to maintain the muscle, so your body should lose weight.

Check if it has any added sugars. I like soy milk mixed with chia seeds, left overnight to soak.
Add fruit, nuts, ground flax seed, etc., and topped with the Greek yoghurt for a tastier snack.

I think they say the full fat version of Greek Yoghurt is healthier than the low or zero fat one because it doesn't have the extra sugar that the low/zero fat version does.

Similarly I would take the full fat Greek yoghurt. In fact I do - my usual breakfast is natural yoghurt, plus berries, kefir, nuts and seeds.

Taking the fat out of yoghurt is very profitable for processors as it's very expensive to buy and they add it to other edible substances they are manufacturing.

I would stay away from any customised 'low fat' version of any processed food.

Anything branded as 'low fat', 'added vitamins'  'high in protein' etc on a supermarket shelf is something I would avoid.

I usually just buy whole foods. Unfortunately they are more expensive, and can take more time to prepare / cook.

Tinned and frozen can help bring down the cost. As can shopping at the discounters like Aldi and Lidl.

Full fat or fat free is largely down to what you prefer.
Looking at those charts, fat free essentially has half the calories per 100g.

Being fat free will change the texture of the product and tends to result in a higher GI score for those who track that sort of thing because fat in food tends to slow the overall rate of absorption down a bit..same affect is achieved by eating nuts with your fat free yoghurt.

Personally I prefer to use Quark these days or Biotiful Kefir but it's pricey compared to fat free greek yogurt.

I'm a big fan of eggs and I'm planning on swapping 2 of of the 3 eggs I normally have for breakfast out for egg whites.

A tip to reduce the cost of kefir is to add milk to a quarter or third full bottle of kefir and leave it in the fridge for 24 hours, at which point it is ... kefir.

Kefir is fermented milk, so you once you have some kefir you can use it as seed to produce more kefir in this way.

An issue with fat reduced items is that the manufacturer may add weird stuff that you won't find in your kitchen to replace the loss of flavour and creamy feel that results from removing the naturally occurring fat. You can tell this by looking at the ingredients label. In the opinion of many scientists these additives may have toxic effects over the long term.

The widespread introduction of manufactured edible items to Western diets coincided with the rise of modern ailments such as obesity, diabetes, cancer and dementia which were previously rare or unknown.

For me personally, they come back quicker than the belly fat. I felt like I had to get my bodyfat % very low to start seeing them shrink by a considerable amount. I guess a lot it is also to do with your body composition.

An update. I am down to 14 Stone 13 Pounds. I only lost 1 pound this week despite doing a lot of exercise. I did have a few drinks last weekend though.

So 15 pounds in 7 weeks. I still hope to reach 14 and a half stone by my trip in three weeks.

When you exercise you put on muscle. Muscle also weighs, so it could be that you've lost fat but gained muscle and thus they cancel each other out. However, maintaining more muscle also causes your body to burn more calories.

My exercise is basically swimming and walking. I am walking on average 14/15 miles a week at the moment.  So I’m not sure how much muscle I am puting on. It’s not like I am doing weights in the gym.

Get plenty of sleep
Cut down on junk processed food .
Do moderate cardio ie walking

Absolutely. I am not really finding it too tough with my current diet and exercise regime. I’m guessing it will get harder to lose weight as I go on though. I started from 16 stone so it would be easier to lose weight from there than where I hope to get to.

My ultimate aim is 12 and a half stone. Hopefully by the start of the summer.

As BillyBudd above alluded to, start lifting weights (to supplement your cardio).. the more muscle mass you have the more calories you burn whilst resting.

You've done well so far, hats off to you  :hi:

Yes - it gets harder because you are fighting your body and 2.5 billion years of evolution; you are highly evolved to retain fat because for most of history food was often scarce and retaining fat was the difference between life and death.

Before my first trip to Thailand I wanted to crash diet and the 5:2 diet worked well for me. Those 5 days of eating well prevented the body's starvation reflex kicking in and stopping me losing weight.

Has anyone got some good suggestions for protein rich snacks?

Has anyone got some good suggestions for protein rich snacks?

Plenty of expensive protein bars about that mimic traditional chocolate/cereal bars.
Boiled eggs.
Tuna/chicken salad. Generally meat/fish are the 'go to' foods high in protein.
Greek yogurt with added protein powder, nuts and seeds.
Add protein powder to oats or muesli which you can dispense into snack sized pots.
Adapt a cookie recipe by adding a flavoured protein powder and removing the sugar.

I tend to add a protein shake per day to up my protein intake.

Very hard to do, like for like, (lose fat/gain muscle) and would more than likely involve quite a regime lifting weights and being spot on with calorie intake. I don't think the OP has neccesarily done much to achieve significant muscle building.

If you want to boost your protein intake I don't think this is the best route. You'd be better off with dedicated protein powders; vegan powders exist if you're not a whey protein kind of guy.

I eat it nutritional yeast regularly, mainly for gut health/immune system.

From above - "..... I would caution against the use of any kind of yeast for those with two specific autoimmune diseases: Crohn’s disease and a skin condition known as hidradenitis suppurativa."

I normally buy what's on offer. This at the moment;

They mix better with a dedicated shaker. Alternatively, add to cereals, smoothies or similar.
I have an unflavoured whey and it can be added to virtually anything.
