Makes me wish it was a real alert for oblivion.

Offline JontyR

I've just had my punting phone blare out loud for ages and then when I checked it displayed the following message

*** UK PUNTING EMERGENCY ALERT ***
Following the outcome of the consultation on temporary / permanent bans the next person to start a new thread about the national emergency alert test on 23rd April will be publically stoned by DavieMac and other mods, but mainly DavieMac.

I think this warning has a hidden agenda as we don’t exactly get major disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes but we are in threat from a nuclear attack from that nut job Putin

Nobody is dumb enough to do a nuclear attack.

We do get flooding, weather events, chemical spills and fires and with climate change the occurrence of weather events and flooding is likely to increase.

How many billions did this system cost us ?

I can't see it costing that much. They just have to use the towers to send the message.

I am more worried it will go off as i am the vinegar strokes.

Offline Doormatt

Turn your punting phones OFF.
If on mute they / silent they will still ring alerting the OH . Better still take her out for a long lunch or something.

So many sheltered people. The alarm isn't for a nuclear strike etc, it's for events where an alarm might make a difference, ie the boxing day sunami in SE Asia where those that had 5 minutes to react are now not dead or managed to save their families.

A UK example would be the IRA bombings where something like this would help clear an area and prevent people heading towards the area, read the news, the New IRA are busy, busier than anyone else since the late 90s. It could be to help people avoid the next marauding attacker like on London Bridge not so long ago. Most likely you will never receive one anyway but if you do it's probably important so be thankful that they are testing the system.

Count yourself lucky that you can be sceptical about how needed this is, in other countries it has already saved thousands of lives

Offline mr.bluesky

Surely to receive an alert on a situation like you have quoted you would have to be in the vicinity which would mean your movements being tracked via your mobile phone  :unknown: in which case they wouldn't send an alert to everyone in the country  :scare: As for the tsunami in South East Asia in 2004 most of the people in the areas where  it struck first were not aware of it coming that's why it claimed so many lives. The first clue of a tsunami event is that the oceans drain away for miles , it gets sucked towards towards the epicentre of the earthquake before surging back in great force. If you have seen documentaries about the boxing day tsunami of 2004 the area it first struck people on the beaches could not understand why the sea disappeared back for miles before the surge struck and then it was too late.

They don't track you as such, they send the signal out to whatever phone is inked to the tower/s in the area where the danger is, for the test they send it out from all over the country.

BTW whenever your phone is on it's tracked, if it wasn't you couldn't make or receive calls.

Fortunately that's is why there is a 2 man drill for authorising the release of nuclear weapons.

And they try to filter out the nut jobs as part of the selection process.

A) There's a load of shite going round on Facebook that the alarm is set for the evening, it's not it's set for 3pm.

B) Pity all the poor punters on Sunday afternoon at 3pm standing nonchalantly across from block of flats waiting for their "That's me ready darling, ring top bell xx" texts.

C) Apart from our nonchalant friends why would you have your punting phone on in the first place?

if I was inclined to marry I would not care if she was cheating as I would be doing the same by punting. Get off your moral high ground (no disrespect) if you would care if she was an escort or cheating on you.

people should worry though if they have a secret 2nd phone due to domestic violence. These people would need to be careful when the alarm goes.

as to the government "controlling and tracking" comment you made. Its highly doubtful that the setting of the alarm would trigger a tracking device in your phone.  You could say "nanny state" mentality which would be more accurate.

Every time you switch your phone on, open a webpage or drive about, you are tracked, and have been for years.  Unless you are doing something very wrong, the powers that be don't care about following the lives of us going to Tesco or Aldi, or trying to get a punt.

Your comment about a 2nd phone could be correct, but she could also have a 2nd phone for living a secret life that doesn't involve cheating or escorting, such as a dealer, or involved in some sort of other criminal activity.  Or she could feel she is under threat of domestic violence.

So you would knowingly book an escort that clearly finds you unpleasant and weird and that you know would not want to meet you?

This reads like a threat and shows you up to be more of a wrongun than I first thought

You are on thin ice with your political comment, now you are ignoring the rule about this not being a chat platform between members and escorts.

You are being deliberately provocative, threatening to book an escort who clearly would not want to see you then changing tac to hurl insults.

Or your girlfriend/wife is scared of you and has a 2nd phone to use in case you abuse her and she has to contact the police to come save her.

You are a disgusting troll. That is classic pathetic misogynistic abuse. And I’d go as far as to say it’s a huge huge red flag for you being a wannabe sexual abuser. You’re actually threatening to book an escort when she clearly doesn’t wish to see you! You sick fuck. I’ve had a few run ins with you because I’m convinced you’re a wrong un but this post proves it.

I think the only saving grace is you’re a pathetic weasel and you haven’t even got the balls to book an escort. But someone with a mind as sick as yours needs looking into very seriously.

I still suspect the timing on this and present "threats of nuclear destruction" from Russia might be telling us something.  Maybe the powers that be are more in the know, and/or are actually looking out for our wellbeing (although they'll definitely save themselves well before us).

Added: well, that alert wasn't too bad.  The last one I had in Romania was far louder with a better tone.

Looks like not all devices get the alert at the same time.

Out of my 3 phones one went off at 2:59pm, one at 3:04pm and the other still hasn’t gone off.

Similar here, main fone went off then punting fone about 10 seconds later (I'm home alone btw) - tones were different but probably to be expected as they are different models. Not that loud actually but then I'm a little bit deaf ..... sorry, what did you say?  :hi:

Would possibly make sense to stagger the alerts to avoid over whelming the system

I got the alert and was surprised by the announcement in a female, American voice. Surely it would have not been too difficult to send the message in a British accent!  :(

Offline puntingking

I have not met a single person who thinks having a government announcement is a good idea in dangerous events such as extreme weather.

anyhow mine did not go off as I turned the alert system off on my phone. No reason really other than the fact I personally disagree with it in the first place.
By not having the alert system on for me I am at least sending back the message that You have not  tried the alert out on me :sarcastic:

How can it be a bad idea?  Seems very sensible to utilise technology to enable a quick warning to be given.
