how do they know everyones mobile number to do this in the first place?  :unknown:
Im more concerned with the uk government knowing all my personal details rather than any alert message to be sent out.

It’s an interesting thought: exactly how does it work?

After all the system will effectively need to know which phones are in the danger area. (That doesn’t necessarily mean government need all the persons details. Imagine danger area is Harvey Nichols Leeds…just need to trigger off mobile phones in that area, not know name, address, etc of everyone there.)

Also not sure result wouldn’t be complete panic, making things worse.

I assume there is going to be some sort of national statement in the news and newspapers letting people know when this going to happen as to not alarm anyone who might not be aware of this .  How is it going to work ? a call with a recorded message, a text message or both  :unknown: Let's be honest if Armageddon does occur what use is a warning, you will only have a few minutes to react . Just enough time to put your head between your knees and kiss your ass goodbye.  :scare:

Going straight on my phone to find how to opt out of this.

Edit

Didn't take long, that's those turned off.

Typical. Armageddon does not mean "danger to life". It means the world is coming to an end. If it does I hope the experts die first.

Trying to think of scenarios when this would be useful.

Dirty bomb perhaps? Fire at some facility where it could lead to toxic fumes? Release of noxious chemical? Shooter on the run like Hungerford - although this may actually alert the danger to your presence if you were hiding!

Offline RandomGuy99

Useful scenarios:

- Floods
- Severe weather - snow, etc
- Chemical accidents or fires
- Terrorist attacks
- Shooter at large incidents

The US already has this. In the US, you even get alerts on the TV when they're expecting thunderstorms or heavy rain. The alerts interrupt the audio on the TV shows with a severe weather warning and generally within 5 minutes of the alert the severe weather arrives.

Offline Jomoore

It's an interesting system, and as it's anonymous I can't see any reason for opting out. As those above have pointed out, there are lots of potential mass casualty scenarios in modern life where you would definitely want to know where to avoid, particularly if you're out with kids etc.

Lets hope its used sparingly and when there is a genuine danger to life only. Not for minor issues like the weather and such like. I get a bit narky with all the fucking warnings for this, that and the other these days. Fuck knows how we managed before we had all this stuff.

There could be problems if someone opts out, so if were not dealing with a nuclear strike, but something else, which a danger to life alert is required.

So there a comet, possibly on route to earth, and eventually, we know its going to hit the UK, but we dont know where.  If the alerts are based on signal towers, to certain area's and now we know the comet going to hit London, then the alert go out here

If the public have opted out, and there is a real danger to life, its dosnt make sense to allow us to opt out

I've opted out because I don't want alarms going off on my phone while they test it, which is what they intend to do.

Can we have the drums from Stingray's Marineville as the alarm sound?

This is the US version for severe weather events. It's useful, but an over reaction in many cases

I don't think this is really necessary in the UK, and could cause more harm than good.
Useful in Turkey etc for earthquake warnings as an example. Maybe as a warning that Aldi is selling out of toilet rolls......

The Government are testing out their Emergency Alert system next month on Sunday 23 April. Even if your spare phone is on but set to silent it will still alarm and vibrate ! Could prove very awkward if you have it about.

Be warned !

Should we be discussing punting phones in the off topic section then?

Were not discussing punting phones, but rather the emergency alert, which will effect everyone in the UK, be it your punting, or at work.   These threads aere likely to have been merged into one thread

You’ve been here 5 years and would know if you’re a regular loggerinner that punting phones have been done extensively, some would say done to death.  There’s one in the UKPUNTING thread currently.

Just a reminder to everyone with a punting phone to turn off emergency alerts or it will give out a alert on 23/04 as the government sent an alert to every phone registered in the uk

Why does that matter?  It is just a text message that can be deleted or a notification that can dismissed.

Offline jay-north east

It’s not just a normal text or notification. A siren will sound on your phone even if the phone is on silent. So not ideal for all those phones hidden away in the back of a drawer! Apparently you can disable this in the settings beforehand.

Are we supposed to scan all the non-regionalised boards then run a search before we post something? I can understand if it's a couple threads down the board, but I never read the off-topic board for example as it's not punting related.

I signed up to flood alerts in the aftermath of the 2015 floods. Every time there's significant rainfall I receive;

SMS text
Mobile phone  call
Landline call
Email

In the middle of the night the landline can be the most alarming.

Could register.

Although I live in a floodzone my immediate locale has not flooded for 100+ years, and the alert covers several different rivers, different valleys covering perhaps 20 square miles - a long way with a lot of variation in the area I love in. Also the area is one of regular significant rainfall so the alerts are not infrequent.

This isn't punting specific, it affects all phones. How many thread on the same subject do you want.

You should try posting something useful to other members instead of moaning about this, you seem to be a bit lacking in the contributions department and you've been here 4 1/2 years.

This is simply the government reminding people to stay frightened. As Tony Benn told us all those years ago..

‘’There are 2 ways people are controlled, firstly frighten them, secondly demoralise them, this makes it easier to control people. An educated, healthy and confident nation is harder to govern. People are poor, demoralised and frighten and therefore they think the safest thing to do is take orders and hope for the best’’

Governments need to get you frightened,  could be a possible act of terrorism, may be a Covid pandemic or climate change.   Governments need to constantly remind you, you can’t survive without them.
