As said by many afan does not cool the air but it does cause the air to move across your skin.  This moving warm air will cause the moisture from your body to evaporate and this evaporation causes a cooling of your skin.

If you are old enough you may remember the first fridges, a container with a water dish on the top, as the water evaporated the contents of the container to be cooled, with no electricity used.

Other tips:

Relying on the same principle.

Take two bath towels.

Put them on a rinse and spin cycle in the washing machine.

When the cycle has finished you will have two cool damp towels.

Lay one on your sofa or bed, lie on it and drag the second towel over you.

Firstly the damp towels will cool you.

As the dampness evaporates, the towels will cool more.

Drink lots of water, not beer, coffee, fizzy drinks which have a reverse effect.  The water will keep you hydrated and allow your body to sweat.  Sweating cools the body.

If you're going outside.  Wear a cloth hat to protect you from UV Radiation and prevent skin cancer.  Additionally soak the hat in cold water, wring out the excess water and wear a wet hat.  As before, as the water evaporates the hat will cool your head.

You could also wear a wet t-shirt, well recommended to the ladies :) again it will cool you as it drys on your body.

Pack a dry t-shirt, shorts, pants, bedding into sealable food bags and store in the freezer.  When required take the item out of the freezer, putting on a chilled t-shirt is bliss.

Purchase Cooling Gel Gilets;

If you shut ALL your windows then all your fan has to do is cool the air in the room and not the air out-side. If you don't believe me, and are dubious, leave the fan on and shut the windows and doors in the living-room and go back in there after half an hour. Try it.

I'm sorry to say it but that is certifiably bollocks  :unknown:

A fan does not cool the air, all it does is move it around. If you leave a fan running in a room for half an hour, when you come back the temperature will be exactly the same as before.

I am just not designed for this heat. Its a killer. In Newcastle its 24c, but inside my house with a fan on and the windows open its 28.

Its a killer. Does anyone have any tips to survive this? Any tips to cool down.

I haven't checked, but I suspect when I am moaning about Newcastle down in Sunderland it will be something like 34 or something. But still I am a cold climate person I don't know how people survive in these countries that go up to 50c in the summer.

Anyway does anyone have any advice on how to cool down, or any heat-related anecdotes as they seem relevant now?

Go and by an AC unit from B&Q - I have one & it's blooming marvelous :hi:

A cold shower works wonders, cold bath even better.

Dyson hot and cold fans can be handy.

I have almost always lived in cool, shady properties so rarely an issue.

Agreed, but for a different reason during lockdown!

Bought an air cooler from Argos for about £100....not as good as air/con, but a lot cheaper.

Fill it with water (containing some freezer blocks), and turn on.
Makes a big difference. The powerful fan blows over a wet filter and and keeps the room quite cool.

Hot?   :unknown:

Is it?   :unknown:

I'm still wearing my "Peter Storm 280 Thermatech Fleece" when I'm at home.

Is it really hot?  :unknown:

I might have to open a window, or two, then  :unknown:

I've got a small fan similar to this one. Clamped to the computer desk aimed at my face from about 2 feet makes a difference.

Disagree. If you leave your windows open and the fan on you are not only trying to reduce the temperature in the room but the outside atmosphere as well. If you still don't believe me  then get a fan on in the living-room,  shut all the windows and doors then go back in after half an hour or so, you will notice the temperature has dropped.

And in the process you will have broken the laws of thermodynamics.
Leave a fan running in a closed room, and the room will get  warmer. The energy used in turning the fan has to go somewhere

You keep missing the basic point which is that a fan doesn't cool air, it simply moves it around.

It doesn't in any way transfer heat like a fridge might.

Would you like to explain from first principles, how a fan might actually reduce the air temperature?

Offline cunningman

Instead of criticising, try it.
Why?  You haven't got a clue about energy.  This is fundamental physics you are dealing with.
Xtro gave the answer for why we use fans.

Turned the heating on ten minutes ago  :D

I haven't stopped wearing my fleece this year, whilst home, as it's not been hot enough.

It's rarely happened in the last 20 years.

I only know it's hot when I go outside and get met with a wall of heat.

:unknown: It's b****y cold in winter though

What a wimp. The UV level is only around 7 and temperatures are on the way down anyway. In Spain, Malta etc UV levels are extreme at 11 with risk of sunburn within minutes if you dont use sunblock properly.

I was hoping to see a few pics of my cock!
Since lockdown, I've eaten so much and got a belly so it would have been nice to see it again.   :D

Anth starting up this topic has managed to reduce the temperature in the whole country very effectively.

Who's missing the point?? I'll try and explain it differently.
If you have a room measuring 10 metres by 10 metre by 10 metres  using a fan you only circulate that air in the room. If you open the window to that room then not only do you try and cool/circulate the air in that room but the outside air as well

We were told that EVERY bloody summer at work but people totally ignored basic ******* science!

Now you're conflating cooling and circulation to in some way try and validate what you're saying.

They're completely separate things. A FAN DOESN'T COOL, IT BLOWS THE AIR AROUND  :dash:
