London has everything you could want, some of the best cuisine in the world, arts, sport, fashion, music the list goes on and on.It's also probably the most multi cultural city in the world, which might not be your bag.I've lived in London my whole life.Personally I would never live in central London, but there are many very nice quiet suburbs a 15 OR 20 min tube ride to central london.Yes it has some shit areas, but so does every big city.

Take it off topic and name some. Not excuses but reasons why anyone in their right mind would want to live there (and I have lived there btw).

i ve lived in Edinburgh and London and prefer London by miles. We all prefer different things Marms be boring if we were all the same.

I just thought I'd float it.   ;)

But honestly, you should have a better reason than 'nice restaurants'.

I wouldn't go that far: but I do wonder if Londoners ever seriously ask themselves why do they live there? You can buy a small island -- literally -- for the price of a house. If you're rich enough to live in the white, central area, it feels like a performance to do anything as simple as visit a gallery or see a show (and Covent Garden must be one of the most uncomfortable opera houses in the world). People actually pay hefty memberships of places purely to be able to get a seat when they go for a drink. If you ask them, people will say "you get used to it" or make excuses: but why live in a place where you have to find excuses to justify it, or pay enormous sums to distract yourself from the reality?

If you live in one of the less wealthy Islamified suburbs, you may end up feeling like a permanent visitor when you come home. I've spent times in several Islamic countries and always felt incredibly welcome: but there are places in London where the hostility jumps out of the area near the mosque. It's like an unspoken, "This is a 'Muslim' area: what the fuck do you think you are doing here??" I know that is 'subjective' -- but I think many people will recognise the feeling if they live in such an area. Every other restaurant is a kebab shop, you just hear English spoken occasionally, most of the remaining white English people look as if they have given up, and if you want to make friends, your best bet is probably the Chinese takeaway owner or someone who is Black British and body language that says 'not Muslim.' You don't have the power to take back the city: wisdom surely suggests a retreat to somewhere you can find yourself, and find a quality for your life that you only live once.

I live in London primarily for work. I've been here for 20-odd years and have a countryside retreat which we go to for family holidays, which gives us our fix of peace and quiet when needed. Weighed up the costs and benefits of living out of town and commuting, irregular hours made it a better bet to stay in town. We bought our house when prices in our area were still sensible so are very lucky in that respect. I love it here and can't see myself moving, but on the other hand I can't imagine moving here myself now if I was starting again because of the cost of housing as you rightly point out.
Our area is pretty racially mixed but no problems feeling unwelcome- on the contrary. However a mile or so up the road there is a gang culture problem so it's true there are areas to avoid.

Your house must be worth quite a bit if you sell it then. Enough for a new start in life, maybe a job with less hours or more job satisfaction. Somewhere where the countryside is only half an hour away ...

If you really believe that then in my opinion you haven't travelled enough.

I would say variety wise London is the best. Can pretty much get anything you want, which isn't the case in every major city.Yes other cities may be better in specific areas, but for range of choice I'd say London is the best.

Hmmm yes. If you book in advance at extortionate cost, spend hours in traffic or on one of the world's dirtiest tube trains. Actually, it's like a grimy Eastenders version of New York. Except everybody in NY is a Somebody. Walk through London and you see streams and streams of non-entities, secluded behind their mobile phones. Depressing. And the real problem is it is so provincial. People live there as if it is the whole world.

No not really. And in case you haven't noticed, I'm airing it for discussion. I don't have anything against London emotionally. You can find fulfilment in life anywhere. But if you want to grow roses it's harder in some places than others. My point is that I question if Londoners really give it much serious thought. Too much distracting or controlling a person's life to do much else than become a more efficient cog in our 'system'.

I guess it's hard for me to be objective as I'm London born and breed so it's my home.Although I've travelled and lived other places for a few months.Long term I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Another pro$$ie that comes on UKP to slag off punters after giving a poor service bites the dust. They really should have no place on UKP.

Yes - if I was unhappy in my job or with my life in London I could certainly do that. My job is hard work but immensely satisfying, and I'm not looking to pack it in in the foreseeable.

Thing is though SonnyC, even if Admin decided that was the best policy, how would it be enforced? It might well increase their determination to pass themselves off as punters while at the same time creating the illusion that there are no prossies on UKP. It's not as if they are a major threat. Punters are aware to look out for them and report dodgy looking newbies.

No need for me to ask myself why, I love my area of London in the main and at present have no desire to live anywhere else.

Thanks, patriotism to the area I live in, East and South London aren't areas I like though generally. ;)
