God help us!

Everywhere this nightmare couple go, trouble follows.  And she in particular – ultra-competitive as she is – can't bear to be out of the limelight.

Poor King Charles (who will put a brave face on it).  And poor Prince William (who, understandably enough, probably won't).

At least in Montecito they were to some extent out of sight, out of mind.

I suppose it's just possible that they will conduct themselves in an appropriately discreet, low-key, and well-mannered way.  But I won't be betting the farm on that outcome.

Does anyone sane actually care?

Sadly the editors of the Sun and Telegraph seem to believe so, to judge fom today's headlines.

Maybe they secretly accept that most of their readers are insane.   :sarcastic:

Yes.

Harry and Megan have done incalculable damage to the British monarchy, both within the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and more widely across the world.  (If it were up to me, they’d be locked up in the Tower of London on bread and water, with no access to social media.)

Perhaps the gruesome twosome have finally decided to shut up and behave themselves.  If not, their presence in Britain gives rise to all kinds of new risks.

Of course some people – republicans and so on – don’t care if the monarchy is damaged.

I do, for three reasons:

1.  Our constitutional monarchy might, objectively speaking, appear to be an absurdity.  You wouldn’t now invent it from scratch.  But it works, and it gives us a centre of stability, which is particularly valuable in an era of much instability.   (I suspect that many of those who would like the United Kingdom to be a republic might, if such a thing came about, very much regret it.)

2.  The extraordinary history of the British monarchy is one of the most remarkable things about our country – and the fact that it has survived into the 21st century when so many other monarchies disappeared during the course of the 20th is more remarkable still.  It gives our nation much splendour in a drab world.  (Personally, I’m not a great watcher of royal pageantry, but I’m glad it’s there.)

3.  Individually, the main members of the royal family are good, hard-working people whom I greatly admire and respect.  (I wouldn’t do their jobs for all the tea in China.)

I think even if you don't ( I don't) it means you're going to hear much more about them as a result, which is obviously why they are moving back to try to build some more drama and media interest.

I'd agree. I can hardly wait.

Have they though? AMW and his links to paedophiles has damaged them more.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are incredibly popular and are pursuing a modernist approach. They are more popular than the Sussexes and Harry is a minor Royal with no status who seems to be struggling with his path in life. Unfortunately Harry picked a gold-digging self-publicist as a wife and the pair of them are discovering that they’re not as popular as they think they are. He’s returning to the UK with his tail between his legs.

I hope he can find a role where he can do some good; the Invictus games are a wonderful thing and will be held in Birmingham next year. If he plays his hand well he could follow his mother’s humanitarian journey which will provide him with a purpose in life. I can’t help but think that he has issues around being the “spare” who is now 5th in line to the throne. Harry it’s time to take control of your own destiny.

The monarchy has survived much worse than this and will continue to adapt for the 21st Century.

I suggest the damage this foolish pair have done is not so much incalculable as minimal. The only person who did real damage in my lifetime was the Duke of Windsor who was a Nazi sympathiser. They are just silly.

Agreed on both counts.

Invictus is a genuine achievement.  Constructive "purpose" is what they both need.

There are reports that Meghan may have an acting role lined up:

If so, that would be good news.  The purposes of their lives needs to be non-royal.  If they start trying to compete with the Waleses by getting involved in quasi-royal engagements, it won't end well.

On last night's Newsnight, the panel's views about the Sussexes' return varied from (a) could be a nightmare to (b) possibly, reconciliation and sensible behaviour all round, at least in appearance.

The Dule of Windsor’s Nazi sympathies were not known at the time of the abdication crisis, although that crisis certainly rocked the monarchy and the nation.

Then, in October 1937, the Windsors went to Germany and met Hitler, Goebbels and other Nazi leaders.  The Duke gave Nazi salutes and inspected troops.  This was indeed a massive scandal.  But George VI had by then been King for almost a year, and the core royal family was not tainted by this.   If anything, it reinforced the view that Britain had done well to get rid of a wrong ’un.

The difference between the Windsors and the Sussexes is that, whatever the former’s resentments may have been, there were no public pronouncements.

As for the damage the Sussexes did, the worst was the traducing of the royal family as racist because there seems to have been a harmless private remark in passing about what colour the Sussexes’ first baby might be, which was blown up out of all proportion:

Tom Bower’s book Revenge fully documents the considerable damage all this did, particularly in America and among Britain’s minority communities.

Said on the news that this initial payment will be covered by the insurance so not an issue for him to find the cash at short notice

I wouldn't want to see the alimony or child maintenance costs of a divorce.
