God help us!

Everywhere this nightmare couple go, trouble follows.  And she in particular – ultra-competitive as she is – can't bear to be out of the limelight.

Poor King Charles (who will put a brave face on it).  And poor Prince William (who, understandably enough, probably won't).

At least in Montecito they were to some extent out of sight, out of mind.

I suppose it's just possible that they will conduct themselves in an appropriately discreet, low-key, and well-mannered way.  But I won't be betting the farm on that outcome.

Sadly the editors of the Sun and Telegraph seem to believe so, to judge fom today's headlines.

Maybe they secretly accept that most of their readers are insane.   :sarcastic:

Yes.

Harry and Megan have done incalculable damage to the British monarchy, both within the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, and more widely across the world.  (If it were up to me, they’d be locked up in the Tower of London on bread and water, with no access to social media.)

Perhaps the gruesome twosome have finally decided to shut up and behave themselves.  If not, their presence in Britain gives rise to all kinds of new risks.

Of course some people – republicans and so on – don’t care if the monarchy is damaged.

I do, for three reasons:

1.  Our constitutional monarchy might, objectively speaking, appear to be an absurdity.  You wouldn’t now invent it from scratch.  But it works, and it gives us a centre of stability, which is particularly valuable in an era of much instability.   (I suspect that many of those who would like the United Kingdom to be a republic might, if such a thing came about, very much regret it.)

2.  The extraordinary history of the British monarchy is one of the most remarkable things about our country – and the fact that it has survived into the 21st century when so many other monarchies disappeared during the course of the 20th is more remarkable still.  It gives our nation much splendour in a drab world.  (Personally, I’m not a great watcher of royal pageantry, but I’m glad it’s there.)

3.  Individually, the main members of the royal family are good, hard-working people whom I greatly admire and respect.  (I wouldn’t do their jobs for all the tea in China.)

Have they though? AMW and his links to paedophiles has damaged them more.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are incredibly popular and are pursuing a modernist approach. They are more popular than the Sussexes and Harry is a minor Royal with no status who seems to be struggling with his path in life. Unfortunately Harry picked a gold-digging self-publicist as a wife and the pair of them are discovering that they’re not as popular as they think they are. He’s returning to the UK with his tail between his legs.

I hope he can find a role where he can do some good; the Invictus games are a wonderful thing and will be held in Birmingham next year. If he plays his hand well he could follow his mother’s humanitarian journey which will provide him with a purpose in life. I can’t help but think that he has issues around being the “spare” who is now 5th in line to the throne. Harry it’s time to take control of your own destiny.

The monarchy has survived much worse than this and will continue to adapt for the 21st Century.

Offline Colston36

I suggest the damage this foolish pair have done is not so much incalculable as minimal. The only person who did real damage in my lifetime was the Duke of Windsor who was a Nazi sympathiser. They are just silly.

Agreed on both counts.

Invictus is a genuine achievement.  Constructive "purpose" is what they both need.

There are reports that Meghan may have an acting role lined up:

If so, that would be good news.  The purposes of their lives needs to be non-royal.  If they start trying to compete with the Waleses by getting involved in quasi-royal engagements, it won't end well.

On last night's Newsnight, the panel's views about the Sussexes' return varied from (a) could be a nightmare to (b) possibly, reconciliation and sensible behaviour all round, at least in appearance.

The Dule of Windsor’s Nazi sympathies were not known at the time of the abdication crisis, although that crisis certainly rocked the monarchy and the nation.

Then, in October 1937, the Windsors went to Germany and met Hitler, Goebbels and other Nazi leaders.  The Duke gave Nazi salutes and inspected troops.  This was indeed a massive scandal.  But George VI had by then been King for almost a year, and the core royal family was not tainted by this.   If anything, it reinforced the view that Britain had done well to get rid of a wrong ’un.

The difference between the Windsors and the Sussexes is that, whatever the former’s resentments may have been, there were no public pronouncements.

As for the damage the Sussexes did, the worst was the traducing of the royal family as racist because there seems to have been a harmless private remark in passing about what colour the Sussexes’ first baby might be, which was blown up out of all proportion:

Tom Bower’s book Revenge fully documents the considerable damage all this did, particularly in America and among Britain’s minority communities.

Yesterday’s Times 2 featured articles by two long-time Meghan-watchers, Hilary Rose and Shane Watson.

Rose’s piece in particular reminds us why the optimistic scenario – that the gruesome twosome behave properly and an accommodation of some kind is found, with at least an appearance of reconciliation – is unlikely to be the outcome.

The problem is that Meghan lives to be the centre of attention.  It has been the entire focus of her life since she was a child.  I’ve read Tom Bower’s Revenge (2022), and it’s an absolutely horrifying tale.  You’d rather be friends with Cruella de Vil.  And Meghan’s bottomless vanity extended to seeing herself as bigger than a noble family with a magnificent 1,000 year history.  Buckling down and quietly being a jobbing actress will never be enough.

Prince William, in particular, finds himself in an impossible position.  If almost any of us were in his position, we would never want to speak to the treacherous ginger fraternal toe-rag again as long as we lived.  Yet if he maintains that policy he will look stubborn, inflexible and unforgiving.

In this context, here's some sanctimonious clap-trap from a clergywoman in a letter in yesterday's Times:

Sir,
The reported inability to forgive his brother does not bode well for Prince William as the future head of the Church of England (“Royal return: Harry and Meghan are moving back”, Aug 20). Love and forgiveness are at the heart of the Christian message and people find it possible to forgive even the most heinous crimes. Continuing anger only harms us and those around us. We should welcome Harry and his family back to England.
The Rev Rita Holden

And here’s a particularly telling and troubling section from Hilary Rose’s article:

The royal family have a nightmare scenario on their hands. Ignoring the noise from California blows up if H&M are effectively standing at the end of the drive with a megaphone.  And at what point does Prince William’s principled stance of “no contact” with the couple who trashed him and his wife start to look petty and vindictive?  What happens when Harry, who served and lost friends on the front line, lets it be known that he’d like to be there on Remembrance Sunday?  Which royals, if any, go to Invictus next year?  What happens this Christmas — do they get invited to Sandringham and, if so, do they do the walk to church?  If not, will all hell break loose and will “sources” say how sad but stoic H&M are, what a pity the festive season can’t be all about family.  Everyone concerned knows that nothing will shift jam like a picture of Meghan with Kate, and they’ll no doubt avoid it like the plague.  But anyone who watched the Commonwealth Games, to name but one recent event, would also know what an enormous asset H&M would have been to that organisation, as Queen Elizabeth intended.

Probably because they're rather more publicly available than AM-W, since she's supposed to be angling for TV work.
A M-W is living on a private estate complete with a No Fly zone above it, so even the paparazzi will struggle to get pics. He's also under investiation by the police, which is probably keeping them away, or, at least, will do unless the Epstein files are ever released.

My dearest wish would be that Meghan Markle goes back to acting.  Anything to keep her off the streets.

One of the reasons most commonly suggested for the Sussexes’ decision to return to the UK is that their ultra-lavish lifestyle is no longer supported by the amount of money flowing into the Sussex lake.

In Saturday’s Times, however, Hilary Rose suggested that returning here won’t enable them to earn the kind of money they need:

My bet is that they’ll announce they’re splitting their time, if not their marriage: she’ll work in the US most of the time, he’ll do whatever he does here in the UK most of the time, and the kids will go back and forth.

Everyone knows they’re in a bind. The only thing he can do is royal stuff which, as Meghan discovered to her chagrin, is unpaid. The only thing she can do is act, and unless you’re A-list that won’t touch the sides of their bills.

How they square that circle remains to be seen but it’s probably about 2,000 pages long and called Meghan: My Life. Mainly, though, I just wish they’d square it, then shut up, and we can all get on with our lives.

Sadly, it appears that there may not be much basis to reports that the Duchess of Sussex might have a role in Guy Ritchie’s Netflix gangster series The Gentlemen.  According to today’s Times, this story was “leaked to bolster her acting credentials, television insiders believe”.

The report continues:

At present Meghan is not thought to have been offered any role on The Gentlemen, which is yet to be recommissioned for a third series.  One well-placed source said the reports that she was being considered to appear on a high-profile show served to make her appear in demand.

“You can well imagine her people might take [a conversation] like that and spin it to create a ‘build it and they will come’ narrative,” they said.

Netflix bosses were understood to have been in the dark about any potential offer, indicating discussions had taken place between Megan and Ritchie directly.

One individual who has worked closely with Meghan said that they were sceptical that a role on The Gentlemen would materialise and dismissed the reports as a cynical PR tactic.

“It makes her look good and intimates that the relationship with Netflix is ongoing,” they said.

If, as some suspect, Harry wants his old life back well I’m afraid that ship has sailed, simply returning to the UK shores isn’t going to get him what he wants, too many people have seen him as the piece of work he really is.

Offline Vice Admiral

There was a very good, measured piece by Shane Watson about the royal "situation" in yesterday’s Times.  Here are three paragraphs:

A job that has never been a walk in the park for William has overnight become fraught with potential for clashes and upstaging. Today William and Kate take time out to visit a struggling tweed-mill … which is lovely … Ooh, but, hang on a minute, here’s Harry and Meghan going walkabout in Burford Garden Centre and employees report that she ordered a poolside gazebo and a dog bed piped with tartan “because my husband adores tartan”.

What’s William thinking now? Something along the lines of, “don’t let them near me”, obviously, but that’s just a symptom of his one, all-consuming white-noise thought which is: “How Dare They Do This to Us?”

The “Us” are the core members of the royal family who have been forced to ramp up their commitments to fill the gaps since H and M decided to find “other ways to serve” that involved substantial financial compensation. The Us is him and his father, a unit of three after the death of Diana, now reduced to two. But the big Us is Kate and William, on whom the hopes of the royal family now rest heavily. Leaving everything else aside, their job is lonelier, bigger, harder and more fraught post Megxit and, having just adjusted to the new normal, now the people responsible are looming once again on the horizon, smiling and waving. Wearing fancy clothes and touching their hearts. Hob-nobbing with the Guy Ritchies of this world, while Kate and Wills keep on doing exactly what’s expected of them.

There are some things that are beyond forgiveness, and Harry’s treachery towards his family comes into that category.  The King was a saint to have Harry and the Wicked Witch of Montecito to tea the other week, but fathers are fathers (and the King would obviously like to get to know his grandchildren, even though they are ginger).  But a brother-brother relationship is different.

Remember the silly, smug clergywoman who wrote a nauseating letter to the Times that I quoted in my Reply #19, in which she suggested that William must forgive Harry?

I beg to differ.

Harry’s account of a row with William in his revenge-fest Spare read as follows:  “He came at me. It all happened so fast. So very fast. He grabbed me by the collar, ripping my necklace, and he knocked me to the floor. I landed on the dog’s bowl, which cracked under my back, the pieces cutting into me.”

Should they ever meet again, William would be forgiven if – instead of just breaking a dog-bowl – he broke the little shit’s neck.

It is important to note that a journalist did acquire information that his children had enrolled to private school in the UK.  H&M didn't share this information.

I would not be happy, as most parents in this country would be, if any stranger had been looking up where my children went to school.

It wasn't too long ago that a newspaper hacked the voicemails of Milly Dowler but it seems it was long enough ago for some of us to forget sadly.

It is important that the media know when to back off sometimes.

After six years away from British shores, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a quiet but significant return to the UK. Harry and Meghan came back into the country without fanfare, arriving by private jet into Birmingham with their young children, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet, in tow.

Nevertheless, after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's latest move back to the UK, the Times revealed that Harry will adopt a new title – and act as the main, "at-home" parent for Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.

The label comes from a guest spot on rugby player Joe Marler's podcast, Joe Marler Will See You Now, where Harry described his principal role as a "full-time dad" alongside "Prince of England".  ["Prince of England"?  WTF.]

In this new capacity, Harry is set to manage the everyday schedule, including school drop-offs, preparing lunches, and showing up to school functions.

The "stay-at-home dad" description has sparked a flood of backlash from royal observers and social media commenters. Numerous critics contend that using the phrase for a royal is offensive to ordinary parents, emphasising that Harry's home life is underpinned by a substantial team of private security personnel, nannies, housekeepers, chefs, and gardeners.

As soon as they have had a couple of our cold, wet shitty winters here they'll soon be jetting back to sunny California.

In yesterday’s Times, Polly Vernon focuses on what she calls “Megxin” and also on the return to Britain of Sarah Ferguson, the former Duchess of York.

A bit of a red-letter week, no?

The Sussexes, says Vernon, “are residing ‘indefinitely’ in the Cotswolds, holed up in the SH (spare house) of an EWB (extremely wealthy benefactor).”

[The Vice-Admiral was thinking of offering them one of his own spare houses, but decided they’re not his kind of tenants.]

In spite of being back on his home turf after the friendless boredom of Montecito, however, “Harry is not happy,” says Vernon.  “At all. He is ‘just as angry’ as he was when he left the UK six years ago, according to The Mail on Sunday. ‘Friends who caught up with Harry were expecting to hear noises of contrition and humility,’ said a source. ‘Instead, there will be no imminent mea culpa from Harry by the sounds of things. Far from it, in fact. He is still in that Oprah mindset. They were agog to hear he still feels angry with members of the royal family, is still frustrated by the ‘men in grey suits’ who surround his father, and still expects an apology.’”

God help us.  All we need to help us make it through the winter is a “just as angry” Harry ornamenting the shores of Britain.

And yet why should we be surprised?  Not many people experience a Damascene conversion after a prolonged period of egregiously bad behaviour.   The human instinct is to self-justify and to double-down.

Harold – as Prince William used to call him in the days when they were friends – will go on seething with anger and resentment till his dying day.

And perhaps Prince Harry will then find himself a nice, sensible, unpretentious English girl who will sort him out once and for all?

Personally, I’ve never seen the appeal of Meghan Markle.

Did I hear someone say, “I bet you wouldn’t kick her out of bed”?

Well, yes, I would actually (if I had time before she kicked me out first).  I’ve never understood why Prince Harry should have got hitched to such an annoying woman.

I wonder.

There's a theory that the late Duke of Windsor was under-endowed.  In an interview with the royal biographer Hugo Vickers in the Times on 24 May this year, Andrew Billen has this:

I ask about the rumour that the Duke of Windsor had an unusually small penis.

“I don’t think I put anything like that in my book,” Vickers replies, “but I have heard people say that a page had helped to adjust the duke’s kilt and said afterwards, ‘Was it for this… !’”

In the 1930s there were related – but almost certainly scurrilous – rumours to explain why King Edward VIII / the Duke of Windsor was so besotted by Wallis Simpson: namely that, as AI puts it, “during her time living in Shanghai and Beijing in the 1920s, Wallis Simpson had frequented specialised brothels and mastered ancient Eastern erotic practices, specifically pompoir (intricate control of the pelvic floor muscles).”

So perhaps the Wicked Witch of Montecito is magic in the bedroom?  Who knows?

Yes, terrible decision to marry that bint, Harry was a good lad before he met her, now he's turned into a woke hypocritical idiot, Markle must have his balls stored in a jar.

What I do find peculiar about M, is that she has completely cut herself off from her father. Seemingly he pretty much brought her up on his own, as the mother effectively left them.
He is now very poorly and living in the Philippines, surely it would be a good thing to reconcile, and allow him to meet his grandchildren?
