Absolutely fucking awful

I wouldn't go that far. I just think everything is a bit too big. The desktop version, even on mobile means you can see every category without scrolling at all

At the moment I would go as far as say it’s unusable. Everything is way too zoomed in…

Back to desktop view as well.

Mobile Site Update – New Mobile Experience Now Live

Today we’ve rolled out a significant update to the mobile version of UKPunting.

The main goal of the changes has been to improve usability on phones and smaller screens, including:

• Better readability
• Improved navigation
• Larger tap targets/buttons
• Reduced horizontal scrolling
• Cleaner layouts for reviews and discussions
• Better compatibility with modern mobile devices
• General speed and responsiveness improvements

A lot of the older forum layout was originally designed long before modern smartphones became the primary way many people browse the site, so this update is part of an ongoing effort to modernise the mobile experience while still keeping the familiar UKP feel.

We know that changes to long-standing layouts can take a bit of getting used to, and we’ve already seen a mixture of reactions ranging from:

> “Is this a new feature, haven’t seen this before?”

to:

> “Not the biggest fan so far. But I’ll try it for a week or so”

and of course:

> “Absolutely fucking awful” 😅

All feedback is genuinely appreciated — especially specific feedback.

If something feels harder to use, too large, too small, harder to find, visually confusing, or broken on your device, please let us know. Specific examples are far more useful than general “good/bad” comments as they help us continue refining things properly.

This is not intended to be a “one and done” change. We’ll continue tweaking and improving things over the coming days and weeks based on member feedback and real-world usage.

Thanks to everyone who has already commented, tested things, and reported issues.

Thanks for the hard work and vision in this. We get familiar and therefore used to the old.
Just need time to navigate. The old version did make it easier to see the landscape better.
I will give it a go.

Not a fan of the mobile version either.
Why is everything so zoomed in?

Admin need to run an optional beta version, receive feedback from users than make the improvements

Definitely feel it’s all a bit too spaced out, so padding could do with being tighter. Each post is taller than the screen so you have to scroll a lot. Safari on iPhone 15

Desktop version easier to read IMHO.

I quite like the cleanliness of it.  The tabs/layout could be a little smaller.

Good Evening Head 1,

Firstly, thank you for the time taken to provide us with a Mobile App version.

Pros:

- Nice and simplified design.
- Very easy and quick to login.
- Fast responsiveness when navigating around the website.
- Definitely more mobile phone friendly than the desktop version.

Potential Improvement:

- Specific member review ratings are not visible when navigating through the reviews section (Please the below images).

Overall, my personal feelings - A great alternative when using my mobile phone. I've never liked using UKP on my mobile phone before this app was created (I generally use my desktop) but I now feel more open to using it on my mobile phone.

Warm Regards,

I think the new layout is good. Much more intuitive and after the shock of change goes away I can see it being very nice to use. However as others have said it is too zoomed in so you kind of lose your bearings. Shrinking it down by 50% or more and I think it would be really quite nice

Thanks for the upgrade and the ongoing effort.
Having something that is more readable in mobile view is absolutely welcome.

Couple of suggestions.
1. When in each forum is hard to understand what topics have new posts.
They are ordered by latest message but there's no label like in desktop version and like in forum home page.
2. A floating button to go up would be beneficial given scrolling a page now takes a bit.
3. Each post header looks like taking too much space hence increasing the time needed to scroll a topic page.

Thanks a lot again for this update!

I found it difficult to get straight to the new stuff, the updates etc.  on the classic site the new button is on each article you haven't yet read and at a touch it takes you to the stuff you haven't read.  The mobile site didn't do this.  As a plus the mobile site was easier to read in standard portrait view.

Someone might have made the point already.

Currently in the threads the information about the poster (7 rows) is highlighted more than the actual text of the poster. Think the balance of that is wrong. Makes reading a whole thread really torturous.

The poster information needs to be more compact.

Offline Kingfisher69

The new mobile layout looks awesome, so a big thank you to everyone that has worked on it.

For those of us with failing eyesight would it be possible to have the next size up on the font for the reviews. I wear varifocals and this font is right on the limit to what I can read comfortably. The font size is okay on the buttons, but when there's a lot of text all close together it's a little difficult to read.

I couldn't agree more.

With the ongoing tweaks made last night, it really is looking good.

It's just going to be so much easier to use when out and about on the go/when I get a few minutes spare at work to login etc.

Again, a huge thank you to the website team for bringing it in and their efforts.

Sorry lads. I read back the thread and the effort you're putting in to respond to feedback and feel like a right twat now. In my defence, I'd smashed off a few bottles of white wine.

I think it was a bit jarring at first maybe due to me not expecting it. I'll try to give some constructive feedback. I'm not too sure about the orange, I know we have some on the desktop web version, but it just looks a bit off here. Also, I feel like the elements on the page could do with being a bit more spaced out.

Fair play for updating it though

Offline Mr Sinister

You can stick with desktop version on phone

Thank you, my feedback on the mobile version is that there is too much going on the screen, the UI is cluttered when I enter in a section just see a mush of text squished in.

Like you could easily lose the replies and views count on the front of the topic page and have an embedded 'hidden' button to see these stats, when it comes to userbility I just don't find this is needed to be visible and causing a distraction from the information I want to zoom in on.

Quote, modify, reply, bookmark again big buttons can seem helpful but feels more clutter on the page, it's quite weird having the quote button on top of the comment

This is my feedback so far

Don't worry about it mate. Many of us have done the same as you at some point or another in our lives.

In all fairness, if you look at how Head 1 responded with the laugh emoji that he added onto your comment in addition to the other two points that he quoted. He appeared to have taken it in good humour. Members are going to have varied opinions on here about it - It's new, and it's a common trait for a high volume of people to be initially resistant to 'change'. Nice one for taking another look at it though. In summary, it's a win win for everyone, because if you like the mobile version, then you use it. If you don't, then you can still use the 'desktop version', each to our own.

For me compressing it so it looks almost the same size as the existing site so it's easier to scroll through lists of reviews? Realise that might be contrary to what others want  :unknown:

Maybe combine some of the lines, so positive, name, location on one row, author, replied and views on another?

I'm crap at stuff like so take with a pinch of salt. I'll probably toggle back to the desktop site as used to that but maybe that's just me

Report page is good. Although again, compressing so not quite quite so much space in between/dead space?

Offline flatcap

Overall it's pretty good and even better to see it's being upgraded pretty quickly. A couple of the issues I saw yesterday have already gone away.

I agree that some of the lesser details of each thread in the list of threads could do with being made smaller or combined into fewer lines.

Apart from that I'm getting used to it, flicking between mobile and desktop.

It's definitely easier to read the text of a review on the mobile site than it is to use the desktop on a mobile.

Offline Whoreticulture

Before the mobile app it was way too small to read on phone. The workaround was to zoom in every time. Double clicking the screen on android was quick but only just too small for my liking.

This new app is atrociously large. It would be nice to be able to see as many reviews on the page as possible before becoming too small to read. Going from seeing 50 reviews to seeing 4 before needong to scroll is a nightmare. I reckon if you could have the layout show 15-20 reviews before needing to scroll that would be ideal

Did I miss any polling or consultation with the membership in the last 6 months seeking input and suggestions for a revised site format, particularly for mobile?

Where was the outcome published and the agreement about which features should be changed or included in the first release of the app?

As it stands, I landed like many on a mobile slap bang in the middle of a new experience without warning, gone was the antiquated and quaint tiny print of the desktop default and instead I saw little familiar structure and only 3 correction 2 threads on a 6+ inch smartphone screen running at 1080p+, over half of my portrait screen from top down is now wasted on oversized buttons and space where before I could see most if not a whole page and then choose to zoom in on what interested me, exploring the listing at whatever magnification I chose;  I could see if any section had been particularly busy or not and zoom accordingly.

Appreciate Owner wanted to improve things to increase perceive utility and value but that should have been driven by solicited user feedback.

Will have a look around and see if any features have been improved or added but initial in your face impressions is this makes use on a mobile more unwieldy than just zooming into the desktop version.

No disrespect to the developers' technical skill but the ui/ux design is lacking.
Immediate suggestion: scale all sizing of font, elements and spacing down to 75% and see how manageable it is by average sized fingers. Maybe down as far as 60% and post a succession of 100% screen shots for increments of 5% to see what the response is to the balance between control size and amount of useful information viewable.  Line spacing made need reconsidering too.

The scrolling arrows need a rethink considering pretty much every phone has scrolling and flicking for vertical navigation. Replace with a shortcut to top of page and bottom of posts, not all of screen, would be better.

Also reconsider, or better still consult, on which navigation links and buttons are considered most useful and the size and placement people might like better.  All the new colourful, eye-catching buttons swamp the genuinely useful page links which also force a data refresh so we can see what's changed since we last loaded the site to read something.

There wasn’t a formal poll or consultation process for this release — the changes were made as part of a broader update aimed at improving mobile usability, based on ongoing feedback patterns over time.
What’s been released is an initial version, not a final fixed design, and we are actively iterating on it in response to user feedback, including layout density, spacing, and usability concerns.
The desktop version and forum content remain unchanged and fully accessible.
We’ll continue refining the mobile experience, but it won’t please everyone in its first iteration — that’s what the current feedback cycle is for.

Reassuring to hear, a heads-up would've gone a long way to a softer landing.

Perhaps post a (temporary) structured feedback board with separate threads for separate features you'd like feedback on?

This is the default mobile ukp homepage as seen on my aging phone.
There is so much wasted space and incurred waste of my time finding what was previously almost glanceable. Let alone wanting to navigate about the site.

Ok so your design overrides my device's local request to show the desktop version in browser settings forcing ke to use your onscreen control at top of page  :dash:

Below is what I used to be able to see at a glance and the new "experience"
Was your ui designer from a doomscrolling website?  Your metrics would already show I spend far too long wading through just the few boards I attend to, to multiply that by increasing my scrolling effort by 20fold is not on.

It's clear we have some talented devs prowling about this site just going about their other (more gratifying?) hobby.  Did you try to solicit their professional paid input?
Huge apols if I've unknowingly thrown shade on Kuck or Chodu or others who have shown their chops before.

I'm only app-adjacent now but I've done my time years ago as a trainer, tester, dev and pm and  everything I've moaned about shouldn't have been missed by a "propah professional" with certs more precious and bonafide than many of those found on the walls and shelves of "legit" massage parlours we know so well.
