This is the default mobile ukp homepage as seen on my aging phone.
There is so much wasted space and incurred waste of my time finding what was previously almost glanceable. Let alone wanting to navigate about the site.

Ok so your design overrides my device's local request to show the desktop version in browser settings forcing ke to use your onscreen control at top of page  :dash:

Below is what I used to be able to see at a glance and the new "experience"
Was your ui designer from a doomscrolling website?  Your metrics would already show I spend far too long wading through just the few boards I attend to, to multiply that by increasing my scrolling effort by 20fold is not on.

A lot of the points you’re raising around density, spacing, glanceability, and forced mobile rendering are exactly the sort of things we’re now reviewing as real-world feedback comes in from different devices and usage styles.
The first release was never intended to be “that’s it, job done”, and we’re already making adjustments as issues and preferences become clearer.
Not everyone uses the site the same way — some want larger touch targets and readability, others want maximum information density at a glance — so the challenge is finding a sensible balance without ending up with something unusable on smaller screens.

It fits my mobile screen and makes it easier to read the site, so thanks. TBH I won't be posting my reviews on it though, you can't beat a big screen and proper keyboard + mouse for anything involved.

Obviously, ignore any ungrateful tossers!

Not jean on it.
Too spead out and laborious  to use , scrolling  through  the items is slow.

Offline Nottsguy69

Terrible from me unfortunately . Prefer the simple easy way to view it . Appreciate the effort that’s gone into it though. Classic for me

Only logged in for a few minutes so far but I've got to say when accessing from my mobile it's a huge improvement

There was nothing particularly wrong with the desktop version on a mobile but to me the new platform feels fresher and easier to use

I have a small suggestion and a possible development
Could you do something to make reviews stand out from each other. Each one is in its own box but the line is very faint. Perhaps a darker line so they stand out as separate items

The development request relates to DM's and is equally relevant to the new mobile site and the original classic desktop version. Would it be possible to combine the inbox and sent messages together
That way I can follow a full interaction in one place when I ask a question and get a response rather than having to switch back and forth

Online Kingfisher69

Will any of the styling improvements of the mobile version be added to the desktop version?

Offline Blackpool Rock

I tend to only use the site on desktop but have taken a look to catch up on threads using my mobile when on holiday for a couple of weeks so it may be useful to me and I appreciate that the owners recognise the fact that many people increasingly use mobiles for browsing and have done something off their own backs to try and improve the experience.
As stated it's a starting point for development until a good balance is found

When I 1st logged on I saw an icon saying "Desktop version" and simply clicked on it (using my desktop) so i've not actually experienced the mobile version.
I can't see any icon to click on that allows me to toggle between desktop and mobile versions so my question is when I do finally try to use the site on a mobile will the mobile version be an option or is my account effectively be locked in / is it possible to change from one to another etc  :unknown:

When using a mobile device you have the option to view with either version.

Forgive me if it has been raised before - but when we're out in the field, many of us use burner phones and sims. Often with low mobile data allowances. When Plan A goes silent on us, we have to find Plan B. So scrolling through AW  and then checking they're legit on here eats into that allowance.  Does the new mobile app use less data to download or more?

Offline belamy85

As usual when sites change their layouts, it's a bit of a mixed bag. Visually it's more appealling and I like this this quick reply option.

My biggest gripe is this: I only log on to the site 1-2 times a month. With the old layout you could see new reviews and comments at a glance. Unless I'm missing something obvious, it's trickier to see new posts with this new layout and involves a lot more scrolling.

I only access the site on a phone but on balance still prefer the original layout. Will they both continue to be available?

A quick note about the new mobile version.

We know not everyone loves change — especially when you’ve used the forum a certain way for years — and we completely understand that.

One of the reasons we’ve made this update is to help keep the forum healthy and growing long term.

Today, most people discover websites and communities on their phones, and search engines now mainly look at the mobile experience when deciding which sites to show. If our forum is difficult to use on mobile, fewer people find discussions here and fewer new members join.

Improving mobile usability gives us a better chance of:
• helping more people discover the forum through search
• bringing in new members and fresh discussions
• making it easier for people to join and stay active
• keeping the community strong into the future

This doesn’t mean we’re trying to turn the forum into social media or change what makes this place special. The goal is to make sure more people can find and enjoy the community we’ve all built.

We’ll keep listening to feedback and making improvements as we go — so please keep telling us what works and what doesn’t.
🍻🍻

Thanks, I would not have expected any launch design to be final, especially if it hadn't been beta'd considerably.

The touch targets and buttons could be placed on popouts or slide outs with size configurable by users that would not impact useable screen estate for the useful infou

It is clear that there are more than a few posters who do not read the Site Rules re reviews, sp privacy and private comms.  Perhpas the redesign could include more in your face reminders of permitted and disallowed content at the time of composition of posts or even automated checks on links they try to post?
Same with phone numbers ?  :unknown:

Firstly thanks for continuing to develop the experience of the site.
The last page and a half makes interesting reading - I recall when in corporate life the Systems Director once said to me that whenever consulting users on developing a new system the vast majority wanted no change.

I take the point of requiring better mobile usability in bringing in new members, mobile is clearly the way many people wish to research these days. I suspect the Forum has an older demographic though and personally, like some above, I would always use a laptop rather than a phone. My feelings towards the new version are therefore from that angle. I have recently returned from 2 weeks away where I only had access to my mobile and found things quite difficult for the many reasons stated, so on balance think I would have found the new version easier.

I echo some of the comments above;
I like the fact that there is less horizontal scrolling. Previously when in a situation where I only had the mobile option I would have to enlarge the view and be scrolling across endlessly. The new style avoids that.

The major downside is that you lose the simplicity of a table of reviews. There is no quick glance, but I appreciate that you can toggle between the classic site and mobile site so you could have your glance view on the classic site, go into a review and switch to mobile to view it.

The tabs area is large and dominant, takes up too much of the screen.

Everything seems a bit uniform in size and style. It would be easier on the eye for different sections to be separated by use of lines, or colour, or font size. Similarly the break between each review.

Some of the other members who have commented above clearly have more experience than me in these matters. I would tend to follow their guidance and thank them for taking the time to share their opinions.

PS as an aside. I was looking at the mobile version on my phone, opened up the page on my laptop and found I had to log on again. Not a problem and I doubt I would want to open both devices at the same time anyway, but thought it may be worth mentioning.

I'll copy my post from the Scotland thread on this

So. General feedback here now I've had a proper look.

Having the "New" tag in a separate box next to the forum page just looks a bit messy/cluttered. Would much rather it be in the same box

When opening into a forum page, showing all the post details under the post, again makes it feel cluttered. Personally having 5 separate lines is too much. Maybe move the "Last Post" to beside the Replies and Views line

I do like the new review bubbles, for pos, neg and neutral, I think they're quite smart.

Quick reply seems a bit useless as you need to go all the way to the bottom. Probably won't use it much.

What I will say, this is the perfect opportunity to implement a dark mode. Would love that

TLDR: a bit cluttered, but the info needs condensed a bit more

Some good points there.

But let’s be honest, the mobile version will never be as detailed or as good as the full fat desktop version imo. The same way AW mobile sucks compared to the standard one.

I still think the best way to browse UKP is simply by using the 2 finger zoom on the standard/desktop version. Can’t see the mobile version ever topping that.  :hi:

Just tried the new mobile version and I quite like it. Easier to read onu Pixel 8a. Previous version I had to keep swapping from portrait to landscape.

Would be good to see at a glance if a review is positive, negative or neutral when browsing any of the review sections.  Saves having to open every review to get an indication. Thanks

Will there be any way to just make the desktop version the default for users who prefer that? I know it's only one button, but it would be nice just to pick the old version and it loads automatically.

Starting to like this version, to being with I just switched straight to desktop version.

Couple of suggestions, both related to the homepage:
Instead of the orange new icon appearing next to each region could the region itself turn orange instead? Due to the layout sometimes the new icon appears on the next line & not directly next to the region.

The list of online members at the bottom, on the desktop version Buddies would appear in bold, but it's not the case on the mobile app. Could that be added?

Good point.

I was going to ask about that being added onto the mobile version too.

Mobile version - I mostly use the desktop version everywhere and my own tamperscript like AW civilizer to render it how I would like it. The CF makes this trickier now, but mostly I use desktop.

I know a lot of younger scroller types will embrace the mobile. I hope the current desktop format can be kept.

I'm fairly agnostic

No strong views yet on the new mobile version. The classic desktop version on my Samsung tablet has lost the breadcrumb links at the bottom of a page. I used to use these, instead of the back buttons to pick up the parent thread, with my last read page no longer showing "New".
Now I have to scroll back up to the top to do this.
First world problems and not the greatest threat to wrist strain that I have but has anyone else experienced this? EM

I have given it a few days but I am sorry I really don’t like the new mobile layout. It’s too big, doesn’t show the number of times a post has been viewed and is really difficult to navigate and see reviews of who I want to see.

Personally I dont like it - its probably clearer on small phones but IMHO that doesnt balance the waste of space meaning lots of vertical scrolling

I notice on the classic version running under EDGE we get a position at the top  and bottom of page of posts  a line like  UKPunting »Discussions & Reviews »UK Punting (Moderators: daviemac, Kev40ish, Iloveoral) »Mobile Version (UKP )

so if you l have read the latest post you can just click on the 2nd "UK Punting" bit of that line and go instantly to the section index of threads

This doesnt seem to be in the new version - or I think the old version under Chrome or Firefox

Sorry to jump on the poo-pooing, time and effort was obviously spent on this, but I prefer the classic view. All the classic view really needs is columns scaled so that you don't have to scroll left-right when zooming in to read posts. Like the user profile section of a post doesn't need to be that big.

UI design has all gone this way where text and buttons are huge, need to scroll around to find things. Much prefer the old web style of text on buttons and all visible. AW is the classic example, I always go back to the classic desktop even though it's not meant for mobile.

Can Management give assurances that the classic view will always be available regardless of device type please?

Second Lilywhite's request that it be a setting that persists from session to session, ideally across all devices, so perhaps a user profile setting not a cookie.

New mobile site is much nicer to use. Not to complain but would it be possible to compress the view even further so on reviews everything is on 2 rows, so easier to scan down a page?  If more space needed maybe change the positive, negative, neutral to a colour code or symbol instead of the word?

Offline dubs

Thanks for the efforts but i prefer classic

It would be useful to be able to save our preferred layout in our user profile, so the users who prefer the classic layout can go straight to it without having to click it.

Not sure if this is on purpose or glitch, but Im on my desktop currently and classic site.

I just made my window smaller (less than half screen) horizontally and it turns into the mobile version? Dont think Ive seen this before - is this on purpose?

It seems to fix it self if I click the classic site on top right, but happens again if I log out and back into the site. Seems like a glitch (unless it's just on my side).
