The named storms seem to be a regular feature now - maybe a thread would be of interest to some?

Here in the South West my phone started making a weird noise yesterday evening around 7 pm - think the screen also flashed red as it showed the red weather warning, as officials got to play with the national alert system.

Had already received multiple warnings from weather app on my phone and laid in provisions yesterday (unnecessarily I know). Lots of people had the same idea as the supermarket was very busy even for a Friday. Charged up all devices in case of power cuts.

It's like Christmas Day here today; very quiet as people heed the advice to stay indoors and not drive their cars, even though we're now on an Amber alert downgraded from Red.

No power cuts, or interruptions to Internet / mobile - a bit blustery overnight but nothing exceptional. Lucky that we never seem to get the worst of the weather where I am.

I was awoken in the small hours by the sound of my bin making an unauthorised journey from behind my garage to the bottom corner of my garden.
Was in South Wales last weekend and extremely glad not to be there now. A friend of mine over there has had part of a garden wall collapse on to his car, doing considerable damage as you can imagine.

Offline lostandfound

That could be a very expensive car repair as bodywork and sensors seem to cost a fortune to get fixed. (And rebuilding the wall). I wonder if many car insurance policies exclude damage as a result of weather events - act of God type exclusion?

I did wake up around 5 am and listening to the occasional violent gust I was wondering how many cars were going to be damaged by wheelie bins being flung around.

My neighbour has just knocked on my front door, as the storm has ripped the hatch door off the gas meter outside.  He passed me the dislodged door as it had flown down the pathway.

Crikey - could have been nasty if it hit somebody!

My old and unused tv aerial has snapped off my chimney. It’s wedged between some roof tiles and still connected by a wire so luckily not going anywhere further. No roof damage atm luckily.

Had a call from someone in the houses within the ground I cover for work, trees down blocking the drive so can't get home.

Went in to open some gates for a separate route in and almost got blown off my feet, lots of debris on the roads and quite scary, I'm I'm southe West Wales and its grim.

Over 50 trees down on roads in the county and the police have declared a major incident for the whole of southern and west Wales.

Just wet and a bit windy here in Essex, dog walk was miserable .

Friends in South west Ireland had a rough night, but only without power for an hour or so.

Girlfriends brother took off in a hurry from London last night, foregoing a family roast  :unknown:, heading home to Swansea off all places, into the eye of the storm. Would have missed that trip  :D.

Feel sorry for the 160 bobbing about on the Irish sea because the Stena Line Captain got it wrong, cannot dock, been in that situatiion and it is not nice .

Yes daughter lives in Swansea and it's rough there, got friends on the coast at Aberaeron just down from Aberystwyth they are getting it first, it's really bad there, wind is a northern westerly which isn't the normal prevailing weather so more likely to cause damage to trees etc

A few years back, when a storm had hit west coast of Scotland, and in my street, a lot of cars were damaged, with tiles, and chimney posts coming of the roofs

Sounds really bad on the other side of the Severn - hope the valleys don't flood again. Stay safe!

Did you mention a chainsaw at some point  :D, might be more lucrative getting the protective gear on rather than the lingerie off  :D.

Can understand the different wind direction causing issues, might straighten up my washing spinner  :D, or blow it down.

A good time to have a garage to protect your pride and joy.

Not if a tree takes out both  The recovery job becomes very expensive.

Safest place is a big supermarket carpark with no street lights or trees, or something similar  :D You might get squshed walking home though  :D

Hahaha well remembered sir, however while this wind is blowing I'm going nowhere near any woodland or clearing work with the saw its not safe  :)

Peaceful down her on that front, they will not let the little hitlers out on their mopeds .

No doubt the private hitlers using cameras are still in business

I put the good cars in the open yard with 10 foot steel railings and brought a scrapper home , won,t be worrying about insurance  :D, worth the same money squashed or not .

It wet and windy in London (not as bad some some areas in the UK).

Over the last few nights car alarms keep getting set off due to the wind and waking up people. So far not seen tree falls and a few item moved around gardens. Had to avoid items on road that had been moved around today.

I do remember 87 and I was living down south back then, the south coast copped the worst of it as it tracked all the way along whereas the tendency is for it to go more over the land which takes a bit of the sting out.
Also areas that normally get hit the worst are a bit more used to it so a % of trees come down most years whereas if an area that doesn't get it that bad normally get hit really hard then lots of trees come down.
Didn't 7 oaks become 1 oak  :unknown: I remember everyone laughing about it and taking the piss

It is windy up here but I think the SW and Wales have been affected more, in all honesty here today yes it's noticeably windy but I wouldn't say exceptional.
I do remember around 2005 or 2006 my house got absolutely battered by the wind literally all night to the [point I couldn't get any sleep so ended up bringing a duvet and pillow downstairs and sleeping on the sofa at the back of the house (as in the back room not outside in the garden )
I'd say that storm here was on a par with 87 but it barely got a mention  :unknown:

Anyway they did say with the weather being so bad not to travel unless essential and that we should look out and help our neighbours so I knocked on next door, she's 86 and I asked if she was planning on going to the supermarket for essentials.
She was so I gave her my list of stuff to buy at the same time, no point both going
Didn't bother with the 90 year old on the other side as I figure she's just lazy, she hasn't even bothered taking her milk in for over a week

Insurance companies will be in for a busy week next week dealing with all these claims, roofers and fencers will be busy too.
