It's always said that the British are obsessed by the weather and we do seem to constantly talk about it, this is partly due to how variable it is compared to many other places which have more predictable weather patterns
I believe the variability is due to our position at the edge of Europe and the fact that we have something like 5 different weather patterns or influences which all converge over or in close proximity to the British Isles

I've noticed that our weather often goes in patterns which last for about 3 months give or take a few weeks and a lot of our weather is affected by the jet stream.
Over recent years we have had a really good spring which has been warm and dry for a few months but then the summer hasn't been great, I can handle that so long as we do at least have a period of decent weather
The problem is that once the good weather breaks then you know it's likely to be crap for at least a few months and annoyingly we never seem to get 2 x 3 month periods of good weather back to back however we seem to be able to manage back to back periods of shit weather  :dash:

Anyway is anyone else getting totally fed up with how shit the weather has been as we've not had a great spring this year and i've got no optimism that the summer will be any good either  :unknown:
Last year spring was good into the early summer but 3 weeks into June the weather broke and I don't think we have had what i'd call a good spell of weather now for basically a year apart from the occasional day or two

You can see why people go abroad where the weather is a bit more certain  :unknown:

No doubt the hottest year on record....since records began...

We seem to be getting milder Winters now and cooler but wetter summers with the occasional short spells of really hot weather. Living in the West Midlands we didn't have any snow at all this winter which is the first time I can remember that happening.

East midlands had snow in November/December, I remember as I'm one of the mugs that clears and grits the pavement at the front of my house. However rain washed it away after a short period.
Geologically these variation aren't even blips.

just caught the end of the lunchtime weather on the BBC - and they were talking about this cold period (lower than average) we are having - and said (i think as i wasn't paying full attention ) that today in Morecambe the temperature would be 13c  - whilst this day last year it was 31c!!!

Offline lostandfound

Excellent weather for runners this month. Often lovely and sunny, but with a cold wind. Ideal.

During the first lockdown I did lots of gardening remember the soil being bone dry, hot weather clear blue skies.  This year its been that difficult to get to cut the grass due to rain that when I do it now it's that damp it blocks my lawnmower.

Yawn.

Anyway, I can think of at least two years in the last 5 where it has been warmer than this on Christmas Day.

We've had 9 months of shite weather and June is not expected to be any better.
If it weren't for Brexit I'd be laying on a Mediterranean beach as it is I have to spend half my time in the UK.

Been quite pleasant down here - springlike - not too hot with only a sprinkling of rain - seems like once again you northerners have got the dirty end of the stick - long may it continue

If it weren't for Brexit I'd be laying on a Mediterranean beach as it is I have to spend half my time in the UK.

you don't have to - there are other beaches in the world ( go explore the middle east and Asia ) and also the non Schengen areas of Europe  - Ireland, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Cyprus, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey. I don't think time spent in a non Schengen country counts towards the allowed time in a EU Schengen country .

The weather has been shite so far this year (spring/summer), I've had to have the heating on a couple of nights this month as the temperature plummeted .. feels more like fucking autumn than summer.

I woke up cold last night and thought to myself I may have to put the winter duvet back on  :scare:

Checked my cooling fans recently and one of them has stopped working,so I have bought a new one which is beginning to feel like a waste of money.Even thought about getting a air con unit earlier in the year as we have had some unbearable hot weather in the last few years.

Offline Stevelondon

Bloody hell. Folk talking about putting the heating on and there’s me in shorts and t shirt as soon as it gets past May.
Change the summer duvet to a winter one………bunch of softies  :D

New place I downsized into has air con. Bit of a luxury but great when we had that one really hot day a couple of years back

Anyways…….. I like my hols in winter. Small breaks away the rest of the year but do enjoy the sun somewhere when it gets cold here.
Best advise…….. retire. It’s great. 😂

From what I read this morning this spell of miserable weather is down to the position of the jet stream.

Normally at this time of year the jet stream is to the north of Britain which brings in warmer westerly winds. Right now the jet stream is located to the south of the country which brings in cooler winds from the Artic.

So if someone could move the jet stream I’d be ever so grateful!

In the Bible it says it rained for 40 days and 40 nights and they called it a disaster.
In Britain we call it the summer!

Offline mr.bluesky

July 15th is St Swithins day, if it rains on that day we will get 40 days of rain  :dash:

Don't see any point in starting a new thread but watching the news last night they were talking about all the floods in the NW from heavy rain on NYE and NYD.
Part of the Bridgewater canal has collapsed and the general Greater Manchester area appears to be worst affected

I'm totally gobsmacked as i've hardly seen any rain here in Blackpool  :unknown:

I know it's not necessarily what just falls now but if the ground is already soaked from a week or so ago but was it really wet over Xmas  :unknown:
I was actually away elsewhere in a few different locations and basically saw hardly any rain which was great as I was driving hence my surprise, perhaps I just missed it or perhaps that 30 miles difference was the difference between sustained torrential rain and next to nothing  :unknown:

it absolutely poured down in St Annes all evening/early morning on the 31s/1st, not far from you

Just said some areas had a months worth in 48 hours which is quite a lot however i'd expect heavy downpours and sustained rain at this time of year.

Would you say the rain in St Annes was exceptional or just normal for the time of year  :unknown:

I was in the gym on the 31st around mid day and noticed it was raining but fairly lightly, I certainly didn't get pissed wet through going to the car and don't remember excessive puddles driving home.
I actually thought it had stopped by early evening and on the 1st I didn't go out but looked out many times and it wasn't raining, I guess it has to start and stop somewhere  :unknown:

We need a lot of rain at this time of year to replensih the deep underground Aquafiers that most water supplies are drawn from for the rest of the year, otherwise the water fat cats will be a whinging in the summer months...

We need steady rain. Heavy deluges in a short period of time end up in the drains and then in the sea.

The reason we get so much flooded streets is because the drains are clogged up especially this time of the year with fallen leaves blocking them up.

So the solution might be to properly maintain them each year. It's not rocket science.

Exactly  it's the same with rivers, regular dredging of rivers would drastically reduce flooding incidents.

Yes wasn't that the issue about 8 or 10 years ago around the Somerset levels that someone decided to stop dredging the canals to save money and it contributed to the flooding which then cost god knows how much more to deal with than they saved by not dredging  :dash:

Quite a bit of snow here when I woke up but it's very wet snow, looking at the National forecast earlier there is a massive temperature difference between North -2C and down South where the warm front is advancing to around the Midlands +13C in places

Rivers are no longer dredged because the Environment Agency cares more about wildlife than it does about people and their homes.

Unfortunately although on the wetter of snow side, the snow has been a bit more serious up here. Plans have changed and even tomorrow looks in jeopardy.

Remember him but more particularly that winter.

My bedroom was a garret in a Victorian house in Cambridge. A glass of milk sitting next to me on the bedside cabinet froze during the night and a the contents of a hot water bottle left during the day had frozen when i got home from work.

Don't actually remember feeling cold but doubt if I could survive it now.

I remember in the long winters of 2009/10 and 10/11 having ice on the inside of a single glazed window.

No central heating when we were kids and me and my sister both remember complaining when we were having to go to bed during a cold snap and just being told to curl up in one place; keep still and you'll soon warm up
Seriously kids these days have is so cushy

The cafe, where I volunteer, has not opened today. Due to snow.

Reasons given by manager, late food deliveries, volunteers not coming to work due to school closures, they have to look after their children.

Open tomorrow "maybe"  :unknown:
