Hamish Ogston founded CPP selling credit card insurance to millions of customers. He received a CBE in 2011 from Princess Anne at Buckingham Palace and at one point his fortune was over £500million
Yet the following year it all threatened to come crashing down in a mis-selling scandal. CPP, it transpired, had been providing protection already covered by banks for free. Consumers were parting with their money for a product they did not know they did not need. CPP was fined £10.5 million but the banks were left to pay most of the £1.3 billion compensation
Today, a Sunday Times investigation reveals evidence that suggests for the last 15 years he has engaged in the exploitation of vulnerable southeast Asian sex workers. Documents suggest Ogston has trafficked or attempted to traffic Thai and Filipina sex workers, and hosted women who entered the country as tourists only to stay at his property and engage in sex work.
Its an interesting article comparing his philanthropy to some fairly dodgy goings on. Its behind a paywall but no doubt other papers will pick it up
