but why did they accept in the first place? One reason and one reason only.
To be honest for a case like Logan Montaya - as in just a regular nothing special chavvy girl, what likely happened is this solicitor was just the duty solicitor down for that police station that day that she was arrested.
There will be something like 5 or so law firms that have duty rosters with each police station where each day someone gets arrested that solicitor firm is contacted and asked to attend and then that case is theirs from then on in. The next day its a different law firm that gets the honour.
Everyone is entitled to a legal defence so even if it was something like the worst paedophile or whatnot who had been arrested, your law firm is down that day, you get the case to defend and cannot really say no if you firm is down in the books as that days duty roster.
On the flip side if she had been in the criminal systems already, she could as her phone call have said phone Billy and Jones law firm and the duty seargent will phone them and they then send someone round and they get the case from then on in. Law firms cannot usually refuse to represent someone. And with criminal cases they cannot cherry pick the cases they take on.
Its actually kind of good that its like that in my opinion as if law firms could cherry pick, it would mean that people with certain crimes never get decent solicitors as they want to take on either the easy cases or the ones that make them look good if they win and not take on any cases that are deemed socially reprehensible (remember even if it was a rape case, the person could be innocent which you don't know till after trial, if you say "i don't take rape cases" that means that innocent guy could be convicted for something the girl has fabricated). - but thats a major off topic for this thread, so sorry about that.
