Author Topic: "Danger to life" alert will be tested within weeks.  (Read 17747 times)

The link in post 2 on this thread states

Reasons you will not get an alert
You will not receive alerts if your device is:

turned off or in airplane mode
connected to a 2G or 3G network
wifi only
not compatible

Airplane mode disables all sending and receiving off radio signals, hence your phone won't receive the messages. I wonder if the message will get pushed the next time the phone cinntects to the network. Maybe not as that would some time after the disaster event they are trying to warn you of and would tie up resources on the network too.

My post was a  reply to yours which questioned if airplane mode would be applicable for this test, and quoted content from a previously posted reply.

Hopefully as you say its helpful to Strawberry, and in the spirit of the forum, many others.
I wasn't questioning the airplane, as I have it turned off it isn't something I need to know, I was responding specifically to Strawberry's post and my point being if she is a fan of airplane mode she should check if it stops the alerts because I didn't know but it can be turned off in settings.

Anyone using a punting phone who doesn’t want it to be discovered should be aware of this!

On 23 April the Government are testing a national alert system, it will make a loud noise whether it’s on silent or not. Best switch it off but I don’t know what will happen when it comes online again.

External Link/Members Only

To disable :

Android users are told to search 'emergency alert' in their phone's setting section, then use the toggles to turn off the alerts they do not want.

Apple phone owners should go to the notifications section in settings and scroll right to the end of the page where they will find an emergency alerts section where they can be disabled.

I guess old school phones can’t be disabled?

Delete it then. I did search and couldn’t find any references. If you’re using it on the day then this is still a potential issue.

Seriously.......wtf did you put in the search box?

I searched for government alert, danger to life, danger to life alert and all came up with multiple options,  even in the off topic board  :unknown:

If you had searched by the title heading in the link you posted - "Public emergency alerts" - it would have brought this post up, merged with this thread on 19th March.

Best make sure your punting phone is completely powered off unless you're using it on the evening of the 23rd April...

Edit

Everyone else who had their threads merged have just accepted that the was already a thread but you seem to want to make an issue out of it.

I’m calling bullshit, when I search now for Emergency Alerts, Davie’s post #87 shows in the results.
None of your posts appear,  which suggests that you’re either talking bollocks about searching before posting, or you did search before posting and decided it needed another (duplicate) thread  :dash:

Are you trying to take over as a mod now?? I responded his post 2 hours before you decided to post this. Any particular reason for you to involve yourself when the matter is being dealt with. :unknown:

Apologies, I probably didn't read your post properly and thought I was making a different point regarding what he searched for and what he found.

I have no desire to be a mod, I haven't got the patience.

The Government testing of the UK Emergency Alerts Service on Sunday 23rd April could mean that secret phones held by punters could be discovered by wives / signif others if they are near the punting phone when the alert goes off.

The alert will be sent to all mobile phones and tablets and may make a loud siren-like sound for about 10 seconds, vibrate or read out the alert even if it's on silent.

Saw this on various social media so edited it to refer to punters instead - it’s good advice for anyone whose punting phone isn’t a cheap payg brick that sits switched off in a drawer somewhere.

It's good to see so many people are concerned for each other that they post this usual info.

I'd suggest moving the main thread to general discussion and making it a sticky. Either way making it a sticky which is not ideal, would might help reduce thread creation.

People are less likely to read stickies, you just have to look at how many still ask for PMs even though it can lead to a ban.

All people have to do is use the search function, apart from that this isn't new news, the other this thread was created 2 weeks ago. It isn't solely punting related either, in fact punting phone should be less likely to receive it as, unless in use, they should be turned off. Anybody who leaves their punting phone switched on in the vicinity of someone they're hiding it from deserve all they get for being stupid.

One concern is that some people in abusive relationships may have a hidden phone for safety, or as part of a plan to leave. Charities are posting advice on social media urging those in this situation to switch the alert off.

But if you have a hidden phone it should be turned off, so it won't receive the 10 second test alert.

There is no need to send a response to the alert. That would be a brilliant way to flood the mobile network with messages resulting in it falling over.

This has already  been mentioned on the "danger to life alert" thread in the off topic chat.   Perhaps a moderator can merge it with the other thread if need be. :unknown:

The government are trialing an emergency alert on 23rd April and if you have a smart phone. If it’s on and silent, it will sound a siren.

Your punting phone may be hidden out of the way somewhere and even on silent. But if it’s a smartphone, I’m guessing it will vibrate or beep even during this emergency test.

Would not like a punter to be caught out

If I see something on the news etc I look through the main board and OT before posting anything in case a thread has already been started, I thought that was basic logic but apparently not
The same is true when reading a thread, I read to the end of the thread in case someone else has already made the same point before replying in which case I can then quote and add an additional comment

He hasn't even read the article, he thinks it will only vibrate or beep if it's on silent, when in fact the only things to stop hearing it is to turn it off or to disable alarms in settings.

I wonder how long it will be before we get a thread to tell us they've changed the time so not to interfere with the football.   :unknown:

There also advising on the 23 April, when the alert will be tested, not to do any online shopping with your phone, as the alert will override this, and the transaction will not be completed

And if you dont reply to the text, you phone will be temporary locked

You don't need to reply. Not sure you can anyways.
