I am sure someone may well bollock name and say that this could be covered by the general football thread but maybe it deserve a stand alone thread

I fancy a little flutter

who is going to win it?

I see England are technically in the hardest group will they make it out?

Brazil are favourites to win

I would say, always expected the unexpected in these games, like a big name getting beaten by the underdog

So Mondays game, Eng V Iran, we would expect Eng to win, but with the world cup, we never know what the final result will be

6 months ago or so you would fancy England's chances but not now going on recent results and their dodgy defence. This could be the most open tournament for years. I think Brazil or Argentina are overdue for a tournament win. If I was to choose a European team I would go for France.

England's defence is going to be crucial. Southgate will no doubt stick with his trusted players. That means Pickford in goal and McGuire at CB. Whilst I understand why he is doing it personally I think its a massive gamble. They are both way off in terms of form. Relying on 2 key positions based on their form of 2 years ago seems like lunacy to me when you can look at players in current form in the best league in the world

v tough group to get out of may struggle

kind of fancy Brazil

Offline tightfoot69

Brazil or Argentina. I think I would go for Argentina.

None of the European teams impress me. France’s midfield looks quite weak, Germany are in transition, Belgium’s golden generation is now too old, Spain are lacking a decent striker. Portugal could do well, incredible how they produce so many good players for a small country.

I think England could reach the semi finals again.

Offline IAmNotFamous

Is UKP a Brazilian or Argentinian forum lol?

Where’s the patriotism? We should be backing the home nations (England and Wales).

2018 World Cup - England reached semis

2020 Euros - England reached finals

2022 World Cup - England winners - surely right?

COME ON ENGLAND 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

It's good you made a separate football thread strictly for world cup, I was thinking to do so too.
England will easily past group stage.. HOWEVER.. last 16 we face either Netherlands (good team) or Senegal (African nations winners)...and if we past that, then quarter finals is likely to be France..
..oh well... you never know... its coming home, its coming home, its coming....Footballs coming home  :drinks:

It's cos of Brazils superb squad this year.
Goalkeeper: choice of Man city's or Liverpools.
Defence: Thiago Silver from Chelsea, Marquinhos from PSG
Midfield: Fabinho from Liverpool, Casamiro, Antony & Fred from Man u, Guimares from Newcastle.
Their wingers, forwards: Arsenals Martinelli & Jesus. Vinci Jr & Raphinha from la liga and ofcourse Neymar.

Argentina also got a good squad, so do Portugal and maybe Belgium.

Its one of the 6

Brazil
France
Argentina
Portugal
Belgium
And..........England...

Spain could go quite far.  They had a really good Euros and that team was very young.  For England, I hope James Maddison gets some games and hasn’t been brought along just to make up the numbers.

Is anyone going to a fanzone or venues with ticketed big screen tv events?

If Southgate does his homework, there's a chance. All those teams have a weakness, even Brazil.
Brazils manager, I honestly don't know much about him, his based in South American league, I woudnt put that in the same league as champions league. Apparently he questioned Martinelli being in the squad and didn't take Firmino...
Doesn't he watch PL??? They have been brilliant and are in form.
I spot a weakness there alone...

Some will disagree, but based on form..
My starting 11 would be
..Pope 1st choice (he did two mistakes for england but for Newcastle his been superb), even Ramsdale been good..however pickford isn't a issue.

Defence.. Tripper, stones, Ben White, Luke Shaw (Kyle walker 1st choice sub)

Midfield.. Rice, Bellingham and ?? (Can't decide between mount, Henderson or Maddison)

Forward.. Saka, Forden, Kane. (BEST 3)

...depending on opponents tactics...Sterling, Rashford and Grealish have strengths and are good choices to come on for tired players.

Need a balance of in form players and experienced players but either is a safe option..

The absolute must in my opinions are.... Saka, Foden, Kane, Tripper, Bellingham

Grealish if we're struggling to break down defences and get shots on goal, basically he can keep falling over about 20 yards out so we stand a chance of scoring with a free kick

Pope and Ramsdale will throw one in. Pickford will make a mistake but redeem himself.
Trippier-OK player but if they don't play him in his proper position will get found out.
Stones will cost us a goal.
Ben White not ready for this level, could cost us.
Luke Shaw-Solid but probably get injured.
Kyle Walker- Good but not fully fit so risky.
Rice-Over rated will get found out.
Bellingham- Good up coming youngster. Will have a good world cup as long as he keeps his head.
Henderson-legs are gone passes sideways and backwards.
Grealish-Over hyped donkey-Sorry Jack.
Maddison if used may sink rather than swim at this level.
Saka- will play good in parts but get caught out positionally.
Foden- Nice little player but too little. Will get bullied off the ball.
Rashford will have a good impact off the bench but is not world level.
Kane will of course score goals but will come deep and doesn't have the legs to get back in the position he's supposed to be in , in-between the goals when the ball comes in.
Sterling not in form but as one of England's most experienced tournament players in that squad will start and score.
Maguire will start, good solid defender. Too slow. Fingers crossed he doesn't cost us the whole damn tournament.

Oh well it's made them a few more  ££££££ in royalties.  A bit like Slade and Wizard's Christmas songs. I bet Noddy Holder and Roy Wood really look forward to Christmas so they rake in more cash. ( actually I think the new version of 3 lions is quite clever )

I see this as a Win imo. Keeps episodes of hooliganism and idiots away. I don't think Qatar has time for drunken louts wrecking havoc around city centre and thrashing opposing fans. There's nearly always chaos amongst gand in every International tournament.

FIFA CONFIRMS stadium concourse beer ban 'following pressure from Qatari royals', prompting immediate anger from fans, as $75m World Cup sponsor Budweiser tweets: 'Well, this is awkward'
Beer sales will be banned at Qatar World Cup stadiums with announcement due shortly, it has been claimed
Move comes just 48 hours before tournament kicks off after kingdom's all-powerful royal family intervened
Fifa is now on a collision course with sponsor Budweiser, who have a multi-million pound advertising deal
Fans will now be restricted to drinking in official zones where beer sales will only be allowed between certain times with prices set at £12 per pint, and in licenced hotels and restaurants

The Budweiser lawyers & PR machine will be busy
No surprises [more] problems are surfacing which was always going to happen soon as fans start arriving
'Oh what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive'
Fans needn't be concerned about being arrested for being pissed, there is a 4 pint limit [£48] at the remaining official fan zones serving booze
