TIL that banana trees aren't trees, there's no 'woody' trunk. They are succulent  herbs, and bananas are the berries.
And that banana tree stalks only produce fruit once.

I did know that, my mates dad had a house down south and grew a banana tree, one year it did sprout a tiny banana

He also grew Kiwi fruit along a wall, seem to recall they were like climbers and according to him you had plants that were either male or female, he had loads of kiwi fruit on them as he'd spent hours with cotton buds going from plant to plant transferring pollen

I've always wondered where the seed is; apparently all commercial banana plants are clones of a variety called "Cavendish" and therefore even more susceptible to a disastrous disease than even other monocultures

That during the second world war the Allies used hundreds of thousands of carrier pigeons for communications, due to to the unreliability of radio. They were therefore targets for snipers. Some of them became quite famous for their exploits and 32 pigeons were awarded medals, including one that was wounded in action 22 times!

I wish we still had snipers where I live  :D

The Cavendish banana was brought to prominence after the gros Michel banana variety was ravaged by blight.
The gros Michel banana was the variety used when banana flavouring was produced. Which is why, say a banana milkshake tastes quite different to a Cavendish variety.
The gros michel variety is growing in popularity, and apparently wins hands down in blind taste tests

I can't find the footage now but a few years ago there was something on TV showing Peregrine Falcons in Nottingham city centre catching pigeons, apparently they are very successful in some built up areas as they can use the high buildings to nest and there is plentiful supply of food like pigeons feeding off of the food humans drop
Also helps that people probably won't be trying to kill the Peregrine in the cities whereas some land owners still take exception to birds of prey and poison / trap / snare / kill them

in the city centre I used to work there were peregrines and every now again you'd be caught in a blizzard of feathers that were fluttering down from under their nests as they brought another pigeon. There'd also be random pigeon feet scattered around on the pavements

Today, I realised I have no actual understanding of bra size conventions and Googled it.

I now know that a double-cup size is larger than the single letter, with the sole exception of AA which is smaller than an A.

Also the Americans for some reason apparently were very reluctant to acknowledge sizes above D and for that reason their scale includes D, DD, DDD, DDDD, DDDDD and DDDDDD.

It was 200 years ago yesterday, on March 4, 1824, that a meeting was held at a tavern in Bishopsgate, London, of a group of eminent gentlemen that included William Wilberforce and the Archbishop of Canterbury, and which established what later became the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

The retired soldier Sir William Hillary lived in a house overlooking the harbour in Douglas, Isle of Man, where he was appalled to witness ships wrecked on nearby rocks. During one particular storm on October 6, 1822, he saw the Royal Navy cutter Vigilant run into rocks at Douglas Bay, watched helplessly by a crowd gathered on shore. Hillary offered money and people rowed out attached ropes and dragged it off the rocks

Hillary petitioned the government and Royal Navy with the proposal, but his appeals largely fell on deaf ears. Only when he spread his net wider by publishing a pamphlet outlining his idea did it eventually strike a chord with eminent individuals with influence, and so his mission eventually led to the formation of the RNLI.

Today I learned that there are people who get offended by perceived "wokeness" (e.g. North Face ‘racial inclusion’ course) and call for boycotting the company but they are quite happy to let the atrocious genocide going on in the Middle East go by as if it doesn't matter. The woke is the real enemy that needs to be banned/boycotted... apparently.

There's a few clubs who aren't in the area their name suggests. West Ham - were in East Ham, but now even further away in the London Stadium.

Everton currently in Walton, and will be further away  when they move to Bramley Moore Dock.

...to name just two.

I watched a true crime programme recently. The murderer was a US citizen, he came to the UK and murdered his girlfriend in a hotel room.

He left the room and skipped back to the US. Upon his departure he phoned the police and said she committed suicide while he was asleep and left a note.

The note was dated in the US style - which became a key part of the evidence in his conviction.

Nothing to do with the above - I am involved in a court case and the other side (Litigant in Person) has uploaded a lengthy statement, most of which is formatted with US spellings, me thinks he's used AI.
