:unknown:  never heard of them but then again I'm  not rich enough to wear expensive watches like those or rolex. I'll stick with my Sekonda , it tells you the time just the same as a rolex.

Do they not sell cheap crap watches in Piccadilly to wear in London?? If not pick one up abroad and wear it when visiting London. If you can afford a Rolex then maybe you can afford a chauffeur and security guard.

Surely that can't be right? A watch worth £60,000?  That's bigger than a house deposit in most of the UK

You can pay a lot more than that to tell the time, check these bargains out:

Fine watch brands like those mentioned above mostly rocket in value. They are also classed as items that "wear out with use' so they are exempt from Capital Gains Tax.
The hardest part is getting your hands on one at RRP in a dealer though - virtually impossible at the moment.

Those articles may seem to mention that there has been a decline but you will never be able to obtain one at RRP.   The problem with Rolex and Patek is that they are a smugglers paradise as they can be sold on the black market easily.  Secondly the demand will never go down for them as they only produce a certain number of watches every year.   There have targeted areas especially at places like Chelsea and various golf clubs.

Exactly I know Rolex want to remain exclusive despite being relatively cheap for a luxury watch but you'd think they'd want to shift more watches.
They'd be better off ramping their prices up like RM did,you can get one of those in a couple of months.

Rolex is a charity, not a business. Anyway, if they shifted more they'd just be Tudors and would lose that cache they have.

Let's be frank, several years ago you could wander into say, Goldsmiths on any high street and buy pretty much any steel Rolex you wanted, Submariner, GMT, Daytona all sat in the window. Even if you wanted a more expensive gold or bejewelled model they'd get it in for you in days. I'm not sure Rolex actually choked off the supply - I think it was more a case of my generation hitting 50s and treating themselves to a proper watch. Suddenly they were hard to get and it all snowballed.

It's registered as a charity,entirely wrong to say it's not a business.

there has been a decline and some watch second hand value has peaked an currently dropping

were you right that  demand 'NEVER' went down then it would be a no brainer as an investment but demand does change. There is no absolute certainty although in the period pre-covid it was looking that way for some considerable time

To suggest demand does not go down because there is limited supply completely overlooks the question of supply. Once Supply outstrips demand  price goes down - natural market forces

The rarity of available watches does, I agree, make the price stay high but with volatile stock markets it is well known that the serious Far East investors, who were purchasing 10 or 20 Rolex or Pateks at a time, and by doing so artificially creating rarity and therefore higher prices, are now looking to sell and realise huge tax free profits 20 Rolex purchased for £100,000 could have been worth £500,000 3 years ago and £300,000

the problem is that there is now more supply of some models than there is demand, particularly as demand is also seeing a small but marked drop off as fewer investors have disposable income in these economically difficult times

I work around Mayfair and definitely wouldn’t wear a Rolex in area as just too many street muggings in that area

Go to Switzerland. You get treated like royalty just having a look.

I don't think they are brilliant investments (you can check the figures, they're not hard to find). Depends a lot on what image you want to portray. Rolexes are instantly recognisable by plebs. If you are with a better class of society (including getting in and out of your car!)  then there are equally prestigious and less ostentatious brands.

that is correct, investors keep the watches in a box, and never wear them, only people insecure about their status in life wear expensive  watches, real toffs couldnt give a fuck about watches.

What the hells a real toff for fucks sake.

People wear incredibly expensive stuff cos they can. Most will wear it to places they know they are going to be safe in or at…… whatever.
To say toffs don’t give a fuck about expensive watches is total rubbish.

I'm only speaking personally when it comes watches not, I must add, from knowledge. There's several websites suggesting they can even double your money, some more than others. I seem to remember in a watch consultation at a shop in Switzerland though (oo they are sooooo honest) they told me it was good to buy a watch as something I wanted but not as an investment. That was some years ago.

Possibly some do yield dividends and some don't.

I have a few watches. I choose the one that seems to go with what I am wearing and/or for the occasion. I don't have any that I 'never wear'.

Here's a quick suggestion set if thinking of investing.
External Link/Members Only

Under "Reliable Investment Watches" they listed:

Navitimer from Breitling
Chronoswiss Regulator
Reverso A from Jaeger-LeCoultre
Omega Chronograph Seamaster Professional

If you have more than $20,000, you could look at these options:
Lange 1 from A. Lange Und Söhne
Nautilus from Patek Philippe
Royal Oak Offshore from Audemars Piguet
IWC Doppelchronograph Fliegeruhr

I honestly am not fond of the look of any on that list. Too many showy (and fairly useless) bells and whistles. The Navitimer is almost the closest out of them to something I'd call reasonably aesthetic. Something a bit like the Zenith Elite or JLC Master Ultra Thin is nicer, and under 10,000. Slightly more is the Rolex Cellini Time but not an investment item. For high end I would quite like the Laurent Ferrier Galet Square Micro Rotor or the Credor Eichi II, but I don't think either of these would be a reliable 'investment'. Collectors seem to like glitzy.

real toffs are people with old money, who inherited their homes , acres , etc, hardly difficult to grasp, most of us know the types who wear expensive male jewellery, footballers etc,

You do like to generalise don’t you.
I’ve grasped that bit.

I wear a Roley from time to time.
Sorry, Roley being the term used by us old boys in the know.  :D

Best watch and by far the most valuable. Me dads old timex.
Loses a fortnight every week but I love it and funnily enough. It probably gets enquired about more often than the Rolex by people who catch a glimpse of it.

I agree with Willie about Toffs and the watches they wear

Roley is not a term used by old boys in the know the kids of today readily use the term

Keep up will ya….. innit  :D

Actually I’ve never heard anyone use the term, toff, old boy or the youth of today.
But being down there with the kids. I am aware “Rolly on the arm” points at someone wearing a Rolex. Just ask Snoop.     Or should I say “Dawg” to us in the know.

BTW…… I’m so glad you agree  :drinks: with Willie.
