Sad to see Dennis Waterman has died, aged 74. Always liked him in The Sweeney and Minder.

That's sad. Loved him in Minder. It was never the same after he left the show. Didn't really watch "New Tricks" but remember him in the Sweeney

Offline Dickled

That is sad and 74 is not that old.
I liked Minder but the Sweeney was great and seemed so revolutionary when it first appeared, the chemistry between him and John Thaw was irresistible.
Also remember him as a child actor.
RIP Dennis.

Offline Aldebaran

I remember first seeing him in the film Up The Junction in the 1960s, playing the boyfriend of Suzy Kendall.
He was brilliant in The Sweeny, Minder and New Tricks, I always saw Gerry Standing as an older version of Carter.
Great actor, although he never really seemed to play anything other than a cockney wide boy type. Definitely a loss to the acting profession.

The Sweeney certainly was revolutionary at the time, filmed a lot on location. Waterman and Thaw were great mates off screen and often drank and smoked together during and after filming. He was great as DS George Carter, great in Minder and New Tricks and was in a brilliant episode of Murder In Mind 20 years or so ago playing a pissed off business owner where the bank had basically closed him down, he wanted some revenge. RIP.

I liked him in The Sweeney, although Minder was a better show in my opinion. New Tricks was decent with the original cast but went downhill afterwards.

I know it wasn’t laugh out loud funny but I did enjoy him in On the Up

Very sad. As has been said, 74 is no age nowadays. The Sweeney and Minder were among my favourite programmes when I was growing up.

He loved the life, birds, booze, fags. His daughters is a goo actress.

They don’t do actors like him anymore, they’re all to fluffy.

I've wasted many an afternoon on Minder re-runs, great on-screen chemistry between Arfur and Young Terry.

A shame about all that stuff with Rula Lenska a decade ago though.  The admissions didn't hurt his career.

Offline donnybob

I watched the Sweeney every week while I was growing up, as others have said the chemistry between him and John Thaw was superb, but what I remember above everything else was the closing music, very sombre

Offline ik8133

Sad to hear, enjoyed seeing him in the Sweeney as others have said.  He was also a singer;

Yes its constantly recyled on ITV4 with a small break for a short while before they show it all again, and i agree THE best cop TV series ever.

Waterman, pictured with Rula in 1997, admits he might have 'drunk too much' to remember details, and confesses: 'I must have punched her one time 'cause she did have a black eye'

I never knew him or met him.
Yes I enjoyed some of the stuff he did. Although as far as his acting goes (as someone mentions) he never really seemed to play anything other than a cockney of some sorts.
His celebrity status gets him the usual RIP stuff of course.
Blighted as far as I am concerned by his admission to hitting a woman.

Class act in Sweeney, a bit like the comic relief. I thought he was in The singing detective, just checked and that's Michael Gambon.

The Essex V6 in 2.5 or 3.0 form is no quick motor, it is an iron weight that guzzles fuel but powerful it is not.  :unknown:

Ah, the days when fuel and beer were just something you bought without thinking about the price  :D, possibly later than 73  before price became a talking point, I had said engine in my Capri and that would have been early to mid 80,s, I swapped that for a Granada with the same engine, the value of both cars at the time was 200 quid.

Not aware at the time but should have been knowing where it was bought, the Capri was 1 of 1 built for a director at Ford Dagenham by Ford,s SVO team, restored today it would be a 50k car minimum.

My friend has a Granada, put a smaller engine in it, a 360 bhp Cosworth  :D
