In today’s Times, Giles Coren comes out strongly in favour of apologies for historical atrocities. Here’s some of what he says:
When is the King going to apologise for the feudal system? His family literally invented that one: a social structure based on systemic exploitation, rigid social stratification and the denial of basic human rights to almost everyone, with the King at the top, creaming off all the money, profiting from the multiple deaths and building a thousand-year legacy from which he still benefits today.
Not that it affected me personally. The Corens did their serfdom in Russian Poland, so what I need is an apology from the Tsar. But I’m struggling to track him down. It’s a grey area, this “apologising for the past” thing, and we must all do what we can.
Also for the First World War. All those poor buggers heading off from the shires to die in the mud. And the expulsion of the Jews in 1290. Although, like I said, we Corens were in Poland then, possibly even the Middle East. Which is why I must apologise for Samson killing 1,000 Philistines with the jawbone of an ass. Yes, they started it, but the Jew’s response was not fair or proportionate and I am truly sorry.
