Apparently we've now given France nearly £1 billion to help stop illegal immigrants from crossing the Channel. Is this not a triumph of hope over common sense? Why on Earth would they want to stop them?

You have hit the nail on the head  :hi:

How much do they owe us for digging them out of the shit, but only twice ?

Are you sure of that  :unknown:
The way i'm reading things is that when the legislation on party funding was proposed it was know that the cut off date would be 25th March so it would always have been backdated if large donations were made

The fact that it wasn't shouted about and put on the main news broadcasts at the time doesn't mean it wasn't known about in and around Westminster

I'm happy to accept that the legislation was proposed to stop exactly the sort of donations recently made to Reform and more than likely they knew or thought that it would be happening but that's not the question here is it

The size of the donations is not the issue, the question is whether Harborne and/or Delo are regarded as overseas at the time of the donations.  Harborne's status (joint UK/Thai nationality) is less clear cut, but Delo has been UK based since April and made the donation this month. Both will make the case that they are not overseas donors.

As the bill has gone through two readings in the commons and is still going through significant amendments no one knows what, exactly, the final rules will be as of today, and they have certainly moved since March.

Yes, because the rule change was only announced in March, not enacted. There was never a question of it being retrospective until those donations were made.

Yet again you should consider doing some fact checking.

"As part of the process, we engage with local authorities and police forces to ensure the safety and security of those in the surrounding area."

Keeping people out means its set up to keep people in
Might need to beef up the perimeter additional fencing barbed wire more cameras & not forgetting some fuck off big dogs trained to bring down anything venturing into a set area

This suggests that the 1200 male migrants will be free to roam [like their SIM cards]
Well its not 99% of them that have crime in their skillset tho i'd wager 9% at any bookies offering odds
The migrants especially the mislamics may well be disappointed they do like young white girls & looking at the BBC coverage the villagers are at the opposite end of the age spectrum

The bill is clear that the law will apply from March 2026 when the Rycroft Review was published.

If I am being your fact checker you might also want to review your comment about migrant boats not being covered by lifeboats on the French side of the channel - the French equivalent of RNLI does rescues near France of small boats.  Indeed in a recent episode of Savings Lives at Sea the RNLI were involved in a joint rescue with French assets.  You might increase your empathy if you watched that one.

We are all entitled to our views but i do get frustrated that so much of the debate on important issues is based on false information.

Point of order, British billionaires of variable dodginess.

It’s not fine, but let’s not pretend it’s uniquely corrupt, whether that’s the identity of the donors e.g. Hester, Ashcroft (Tories generally) or the mechanism e.g. secret loans, opaque routing and policy-adjacent timing (Labour generally).
Did I pretend it's uniquely corrupt ?

But this is the standard MO of the likes of Trump and Reform, make false statements which are sometimes shocking enough times and then keep reinforcing it by repeating it enough times and before long Millions have soaked it up and repeating it themselves, before long it's a known fact  :dash:

You have been misinformed. The date was there from the start. Now I wonder who would spread such misinformation?

The problem is that the argument is nuanced and both sides are trying to simplify it for the masses.  The doesn’t make it misinformation.

Yes, it was clear that the banning of donations in crypto assets and the £100k cap on foreign donations would apply from the date of Rycroft Report - 25th March 2026. Both donors would argue that they are not foreign donations, and the donations were not made in crypto.

However, it’s not as straightforward as that.  The rules weren’t well formed then, there is a huge amount of amendments happening to the bill and the legality, or not, of these donations will depend on the fine print.

The government is still trying to fine tune the legislation to address the specific Reform donations after the fact. The definition (of foreign donations)  that will ultimately apply was not available in March.

imposing windfall taxes on oil & gas or on banks or upping capital gains tax would […] repeat the mistake that Rachel made […] The Achilles heel, the fiscal Achilles heel of this government thus far has been its unwillingness and/or inability to cut public spending.”

I didn’t get any. Any free condom or free housing benefits. I pay rent, deposit, council tax, income tax, other bills. Needed a UK guarantor for renting a room, then references from its first place.

I don’t mind that, don’t want any benefits from government as I’m not getting any. I seeing homeless people in streets selling weeds and other stuff, just google Sheil Road Kensington, Liverpool. They always ask “ any change, 10 quids”. Why can’t they go to work in shops? I seeing people specifically foreigners doing full time and part time jobs, didn’t see any Brit doing uber, care jobs, local shops.

The amount I pay for my rent for one room, the neighbors ( Brits, other residents) they pay for whole house. Still I don’t have any complaints, coz I came legally paid huge amount money to University, woke legally, pay taxes. Don’t want any benefits, just need legal procedures to stay and work in UK. International students pay thrice the amount a British student pay. So government encouraging Brits to educate, do more jobs, they have housing benefits. Homeless don’t want to work, pay taxes, so they are like this.

So it’s common sense that people coming through boats stealing your benefits not other legal migrants came for work here. It’s the fault of law and the government; already I did a research paper in my final dissertation about this topic, it is what it is.

I can state with confidence that Daniel , who writes a weekly opinion piece for the Times, is as appalled by the prospect of a Reform UK government as I am – and as dismayed that the party has recently acquired £72 million to help bring this about.

Nonetheless, Finkelstein is fiercely opposed to the Government's attempts to stop the two recent donations, for reasons he makes clear in an unanswerable piece in today’s paper, under the heading “Banning Reform’s £72m donations breaks the rule of law” and the sub-heading, “A terrible precedent would also backfire politically while legitimising Nigel Farage’s plans for retrospective action on migrants”.

Here is an extract:

I am deeply concerned there may be an attempt to force Reform UK to return donations it has received under existing law because the law is about to change.

Any manoeuvre to nullify Reform’s donations will (and this is entirely obvious) not work anyway. The donors will come back later with more money. And other donors, angered by the attempt, will doubtless join in. But the move would be wrong even if it did work.

The proposal being made is to backdate a cap on donations from those living overseas to March, when the government originally announced its policy. And this proposal absolutely does not satisfy the requirement that the law be predictable. It does not comply with the rule of law.

An announcement by a government that it intends to change the law is not the same as a change in the law. Parliament had not considered, let alone agreed, the change. There has even been a change of prime minister since the government introduced its bill. It is absolutely wrong to require someone to obey a proposal that is not yet a law or penalise them retrospectively. It is not the British way of doing things and it ought never to be.

There is something else disturbing about this potential move on funding: it is aimed at a particular group of people. It would be law made retrospectively by one party to stop another party who they don’t like from gaining political advantage, and using a distorted law to do it. That too is against the idea of the rule of law.

Online Charliehutton

Thank goodness we have a Prime Minister who refuses to put National security ahead of Social security.

More than 4,000,000 of us are now claiming 'Pip' payments, with more than 1,000 new 'Pip' claims being approved every day, the result of a surge in people with mental health conditions. We can have no doubt that these claims are genuine; after all, with almost 100,000 employees, the DWP have plenty of staff to rigorously root out any bogus claims.

What is causing so much mental anguish, do you think?

Stop the boats and giving benefits to asylum seekers. Those who already in Uk need to work like other people and need to pay tax.
Migrants (any ethnicity) if they came here legally, and have education, work experience they need to get jobs and visas to stay n work in the UK.
Give every Brits benefits for housing, family, kids support, education. Atleast reduce their tax rate.

Business need to be encouraged, tax need to be lowered.
Health sector, more recruitment needed for staff shortage, waiting times need to lowered.
People from other religious backgrounds, need to be more careful when doing celebrations, it’s not your country, need to follow the UK culture and law.

It can’t be done overnight, If this happens we don’t see any inflation, corruption, child rapes, frauds, religious/ racial invasion. If I’m wrong, criticisms are welcomed

I have to say I am finding myself increasingly fascinated by 'which box' to put you in. I switch between 'troll' to 'cerebrally challenged'.

It has to be one or the other. It cannot IMO be both.

There is a very important and polarising discussion around immigration, which we should all be having, but it should be based around reality.

For that latter reason your contributions add very little.
