I just got back from a 5 day business trip to Bangkok. It was my first trip as well. Something happened that reminded me about the OP's comment about Indians not being liked by the local sex workers.

I walked onto the 1st floor of Nana Plaza behind a bunch of Indian guys and Security stopped the group from entering the first go go at the top of the stars. The mamasan? took me by the arm and led me pass Security.  I asked her what that was about. She said that Indian men are cheap charlies. They come in and look. When asked to buy drinks, they either refuse or make one drink last as long as they can get away with it. And they definitely won't buy lady drinks.

To these bars owners, money is money and they dont care about the color of the hand that passes it over. So i am inclined to believe that there is some truth to this as opposed to it being out and out racism.

I later got talking to an expat at a bar and he was saying that Japanese men are considered Tier 1 customers. Punting is so expensive at home that even when a freelancer high ball them, they accept without negotiating because it is still cheap to them. Tier 2 are the Europeans.  They are relatively affluent but they won't get high balled. They know what is a fair price for both sides and they won't be moved. Tier 3 are Indian guys.

I don't know if its because they aren't as affluent. Or maybe punting back home is cheaper. Or... Regardless of the why, the expat was saying that Indian guys will often so low ball the girls to the point where there is no point negotiating. And the guys will see that being her playing hard to get and persist with the 'negotiating'.

I am just repeating what was said to me by a mamasan and an expat. If you are Indian and you don't agree then don't take it out on me. :D

Yes, I am of Indian origin, so I definitely look like an Indian. However, I have all the good bits of British inside me and you can only see that when I talk or with my behaviour.

I can see the logic behind what the mamasan and the expat told you, and unfortunately I have to agree, as I understand how Indian guys think.. when they actually go to places like Bangkok or Pattaya.

Keeping me aside, most of the Indian guys on their own will behave nicely and treat the working girls fairly. The fact that they went on a holiday to a different country means they are probably earning well and can spend well to have a good time. They don't need to show off anything to anyone by being stupid. This is where the good ends.

If they go to these places as a group, that's where the bad starts. They are probably trying to save money by sharing the accommodation and the working girls. This is what happens in India, as good looking escorts are expensive, they tend to share, I was told. They repeat the same concept anywhere they go. In Indian society, a working girl is seen as basically a bad girl with no ethics (same not applied to the punters though).. and if it's Thailand, they will think even worse about a working girl. Which is why they don't show any respect and can seek an unfair deal. As a group, the bad behaviour comes out after a drink or two and everyone will try to prove themselves or show off.

I have seen a group of Indian guys having one beer each and sat in front of the dancing girls for several hours. No girls approached them. I was sitting behind them with the young girl I was talking about, and several other girls were in conversation with me and laughing with me etc. This group of guys thought I owned the bar, as all these girls were nice to me and talking to me. One guy actually called me and asked me to get tissues as his drink was dropped on the floor.. I went and told him to f*ck off. He said sorry and explained that he thought I owned the bar. He couldn't believe an Indian guy can just sit on his own and all these girls are all over him.

Luckily, as I went on my own and I behave nicely and I basically told the girls that I am from London straight after a hello, meant that I didn't experience any hurdles. A couple of girls have actually asked me whether I came from London before I said it. So, I thought they can spot the difference somehow and work out how they behave with someone like me. The bars I went to, welcomed me with a smile and I did spend decent money on drinks.

After my trip, I am very confident that I won't face any issues in Thailand.

Back to pre covid I hope/think , just fill out a form on the plane

Offline Your Chef

Needed proof of vaccination at your departure airport.
Didn't fill in a form for immigration but admittedly I did go through fast track passport control.

All entry restrictions into a Thailand have been dropped. The visa on arrivals have been extended too.

EVA airlines asked that people wear a mask on the plan. 90% complied.  Nothing was said to the 10%.

No one at either end asked to see proof of vacination.

Re fast track immigration, the queue for us plebs was 20min long :)

Bangkok shopping malls have airport like metal detectors at the entrance. A heat sensitive camera is set up to detect if you have a temperature.

Most Thai people appear to be masking. Stores have signs asking you to mask. I would say 70% of tourists comply. When you move to tourist heavy places like Nana and Khoa San Road, the Japanese tourist seem to be the only ones masking.

That, in a nutshell, is the covid situation in Bangkok as at late October.

Offline Swapmeister

Re punting terminology on wg profiles, they appear to have invented their own words. Apparently, no fresh, for example, means no bareback.

Offline Swapmeister

Oh yeah, no immigration form was required

It's because you came in alone. They'd know just by that. If you went with another Brit of Indian origin they'd still know from clothes, grooming, behaviour.

I'd say don't bother with masks*. I never wore a mask in Bangkok, apart from the airport, and never got questioned about it. It's a conformist society thing and as a farang you're not quite part of it so you may as well take advantage of one of the positive aspects of that. Besides, even the Thais are starting to realise it's theatre and are very slowly starting to take them off more.

On the other hand, a few Eva air staff on my flights were telling dissenters to mask up. You got lucky! (Easy enough to always have a drink in your hand as an excuse though)

*I guess masks can help disguise you a bit if you're married, playing around and don't want to be recognised though.

When I watch David Strachan(?) on youtube and he doesn't blur punters faces. I think face mask and hat is the way to go if you have a secret to hide.

I think so, some of these videos get millions of views. I'm in a Bangkok112 one in a club in Samui. Nothing to worry about there but it's got a million + views.  Most nightclubs in Pattaya won't let you even take a photo or video anymore

Some of these YouTubers are going to get a hiding filming the wrong bloke or even girl.

I suspect that a lot of these Youtubers use hidden cameras. I'm saying that because people never atempt to look away or hide their faces or argue to the camera. That, plus the resolution isnt like its a Go Pro of iPhone.

On my return I did review the videos for the weekend i was there, just to see if I was in any.  i didnt stop to chat to any of the girls so no 'will she won't she' guest spots. Even so, being videotaped in that area could be embarrassing.

Having said that, if you was working your way through these videos then you are unlikely to be some uptight  moralistic person that I would  know. lol.

Usually you can tell from appearance alone. Young Indian men from London tend not to have moustaches unlike their fresh-from-India counterparts. Also your counterparts like the colour beige for some reason. Lol. Basically office-like wear minus a tie. And often open toe sandals. Whereas an Indian guy from London just wears what everyone else from London is wearing.

I think Bangkok112 also had a camera in a bag that faced the other way and he controlled it with an app on his phone.  You do still see idiots walking around with a gimble filming though.  There were loads on Bangla Road, really annoying if you want to stop and talk with freelancers as those are the romantic  moments they love to capture

Although, fundamentally I can't agree with Bangkok112 filming punters and girls negotiating etc, I am a hypocrite because they are absolutely superb viewing...

I feel exactly the same, they are annoying but I end up watching a few like Asian Nights.  Channels like Dave Strachan tends not to linger on the bars, some channels do though.  As much as I’m looking forward to Pattaya and Nana in Bangkok, judging by YouTube it’s full of people walking the streets filming.

The videos that claim to be lots of freelancers are definitely hidden camera as they stay in the girls for a while.  You can see the girls start to notice a creep lingering.

Bangkok is shorts weather. The guide books say to wear trousers to the temples. So I did. In practice, guys who don't are left alone but ladies were being prompted to cover up bare arms.

A few tips if appearing on YouTube worries you.

The walking videos tend to be 'Nana at the weekend' as opposed to work days. Also the focus seem to be the freelancers by the Nana Hotel sign opposite Nana Plaza (there are a couple of bars opposite where these people 'people watch' from. Walk pass the sign. More freelancers further into Soi 4 and less of an audience.

Also,  Security at entrance to Nana Plaza will check bags for bring your own beer offenders and camera equipment. There is a bar just inside where you and your beer can people watch without you becoming the watched.

If you want a more discrete experience Google Thermae bar.  It is a bar in basement of a hotel on Sukhumvit between Nana and Asoke MRT. Its reason for being is to allow freelancers to connect with customers, Drinks are expensive by Bangkok standards but only marginally so for us who are use to London prices.

Useful thing to know. Lady boys are not allowed in by Management. So you won't have to worry about picking one unintentionally.

Decent clubs/bars in Bangkok will expect you to wear jeans.  You might get a tedious excuse if you don't wear them to a club/higher end bar down Sukhumvit

Pattaya - Absolutely not.  As you say you are not white and there are some racist door policies, I would suggest taking your passport out if you're going to ibar/insomniac/lucifer type places as they do sometimes ID none whites. I have seen a few scenes over this.

In Pattaya, Indians have all their own clubs as they simply won't get into the white/farang places

I noticed similar in Bangkok. If you walk into Soi 4,  pass the Nana Hotel sign, about 100  yards further, on the right is the 'Best Indian club in Bangkok' according to the sign.

That is on the other side of the road but roughly in same part of Soi 4.
