Winter Olympics: Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero fails doping test - External Link/Members Only

Never been a fan of Winter Olympics and have not really bothered with past couple of Summer Olympics either, just too tainted to enjoy.

However, these little dainty skater ladies doping is a flipping eye-opener isn't it!? Presume there'll be usual nonsense about asthma meds or contaminated supplements, has any athlete EVER  just put their hand up and said yeah, it's a fair cop, you got me?

Russia were not allowed to compete as "Russia" but only as ROC - Russia Olympic Committee meaning they could not have the Russian flag displayed on their shirts or uniforms, however considering they had a state funded  drug performance enhancing program this is no real punishment. What they should do is ban them completely from both the summer and winter Olympics for the foreseeable future. In many ways I do feel sorry for the 15 year old Russian figure skater the pressure on her must have been enormous.  So much so that she only finished 4th in the final. There would have been no medal ceremony had she won.

That's of course if she actually knew she'd taken a banned substance, as I recall there were athletes in various countries like East Germany where they thought they were clean but were being given it by their trainer / state regime

I recall Sharron Davies was cheated out of Gold by an East German swimmer who didn't know and was devastated when she found out she hadn't won it fairly

I read somewhere that the Russian figure skater drank from a cup that had contained her Grandfather's asthma medicine so make of that what you will. Sounds a bit far fetched to me   :unknown:

I remember Tyson Fury claiming his failed  dope test was due to eating uncastrated boar. Someone should print a book listing all their ludicrous excuses.

She got thrown under the bus by her team and was left to fend for herself when all this came out.

This is just a continuation of what the USSR were doing in the early 80s. Back then, female athletes knew no better and implicitly trusted their coach and the state as why would my coach and state lie to me, they only have my best interests at heart. It was only later when many of them were suffering health problems due to what they had taken that they discovered this wasn't true.

This is a tried and tested excuse in cycling which provides some of the best excuses.

Blimey, they're hilarious - you forget they are grown men and not idiot 6-yr olds. Hamilton's inner twin is a corker, could only be topped by demonic possession. Maybe someone will actually blame The Devil one day... Hand of Satan sort of thing.

Cycling is and always has been rife for doping, watched the documentary about Lance Armstrong who openly admitted doping but at one stage others suddenly got faster than him as they'd found a better drug.

Listened to a radio program on R5 about 8 years ago while driving over to Leeds for a punt one evening  ;)
Anyway think it was back in the 60's when a lot of the hazards weren't necessarily known about doping, can't remember the rider but they told the story of how he was taking XYZ but it caused him to overheat and dehydrate.
Apparently this guy fell off his bike / passed out more than once but kept coming round and getting back on, the way they then described it was that he "Rode himself to death"

Slightly off topic but does anyone else notice a whistling noise coming from the TV when they perform, especially when it's couples doing lifts?

The test that she failed was at an event just before Christmas not at the Olympics but because the investigation dragged on for so long she was allowed to take part in the Olympics

I've always loved watching the tour de France but as you point out it is a sport that's rife with doping scandals.  I cannot recall a year when there has not  been at least one rider who has failed a drugs test.

The drug detected, Clostebol is a steroid used in some countries as a vaginal cream.
Tests have proved that detectable amounts (in the blood) can be transferred to a male partner during sex.
How's that as a possible excuse?

IIRC, the reasoning behind the "ROC" designation was that the blanket ban on Russian athletes was deemed to be unfair on those competitors who were clean.   Thus, "clean " athletes were  allowed to compete, under the ROC tag.

Of course, this has now been shown to be nonsense.
