Cycling is and always has been rife for doping, watched the documentary about Lance Armstrong who openly admitted doping but at one stage others suddenly got faster than him as they'd found a better drug.
Listened to a radio program on R5 about 8 years ago while driving over to Leeds for a punt one evening

Anyway think it was back in the 60's when a lot of the hazards weren't necessarily known about doping, can't remember the rider but they told the story of how he was taking XYZ but it caused him to overheat and dehydrate.
Apparently this guy fell off his bike / passed out more than once but kept coming round and getting back on, the way they then described it was that he "Rode himself to death"
