With all the chaos that is going on a petrol stations I was wondering what cars people would choose as their dream wheels. Impractical, stupid, or just plain expensive. Mine would be a 1968 Mustang GT fastback. No creature comforts. Nothing electric such as power steering, abs etc. Just a pure V8 muscle car that’s cool as fuck.

Had a genuine MACH 1, with the 351 engine, disappointing to say the least, all noise and no go with a slush box.

The most fun car I built was a good old British Sunbeam Alpine, but with a Modern Ford Dohc, fuel injected, turbo charged power plant, 5 speed, PAS, 4 linked coil overed rear end and servo assisted disc brakes on all four corners.

The one I wish I never sold, MK1 Capri, pre facelift, fitted with a 2.8 injected engine with a Turbo Technics kit, 5 speed, pas,

The one that really was the best all round car and better than both the late M3 and M4 was the 98 BMW E39 M5, which felt unbreakable and very usable, unlike the Lotus Carlton which felt both heavy and fragile.

Dream car? something old with that BMW V8, maybe a Ford Cortina MK!.

Don't have one any more. The last car launch I was excited for was the McLaren 720s back in 2017. Just not interested anymore.

Can't see the point of a car that just gets me catching up the next one in the queue on our congested road network a bit faster.

Give me comfort and quietness and EVs have a massive advantage when it comes to refinement. Also, once you get past an S Class type of vehicle you're mostly getting less quality as you pay more because of massively smaller production volumes.

I'd really like a car the size of a 3 Series, which is actually quite a big car these days, with the luxury of an S Class, and the first car to achieve that will probably be an EV.

Lambo Miura SV or Ferrari 275GTB.

Probably just to look at .... I imagine owning one would be a nightmare.  :scare:

I do have a lot of love for a Muira SV too, but for me, my dream car always has been a Ferrari 288 GTO.
Stunning from every angle.
It’s also the star of one of my favourite YouTube clips. (Although there’s no way I’d have the balls/skill to do this in a multi-million pound car)

During the weekend I saw someone driving an Aston Martin DB5, the same gun metal colour as the one in 007’s Skyfall.  Every single pair of eyes on the motorway were on that car.  Such a classy and beautiful car.

Second choice would be a Maserati.

Would be quite handy at the petrol stations although the risk of wiping everything out is pretty high. Still… rough with the smooth.

I believe the same is probably true of most of these Supercars especially the older ones, the Lambo Countach is still a great looking car and has been a "Dream car" for decades but when James May drove one on Top Gear he said it was an absolute pig to drive so shattered his dream.

Many Ferraris and Lambos to consider but an old car that hasn't been mentioned would be an original Ford GT40

Again i'm guessing it's not going to be particularly "Usable" so i'm going to go for something a bit more modern which doesn't break the bank; is usable day to day as a normal saloon but has performance which isn't too shy of the top Ferraris etc and will still kick the arse out of an M5 any day of the week; looks great IMO and will turn heads but above all it's actually something that I could realistically afford to buy, so my dream car to actually own is a Nissan GTR  :drinks:

Well he was half right they are a pig to drive SLOWLY but as his "test" involved country roads and reversing in Burford I don't think he was very objective.
Take it from me no car draws more attention.

Well in the realm of pure fantasy I will take an Ariel Nomad - and a country estate on which to enjoy it!

 both fantastic looking cars

They are, but the 308, especially earlier ones, aren’t really that quick. A modern Golf GTI (mark 5 onwards) would eat it for breakfast.
The 288 GTO was a special edition so had go and show (see the vid I linked)

For a dream car I’d actually drive like it was supposed to be driven, it would be a Megan r26r. A butt ugly hot hatch with no back seats and front wheel drive. Never really fancied it till I got a shot of one at a track day recently and it was superb. Everything felt so balanced and brilliantly weighted. Really chuckable. Would be even more fun on a twisty B road. ( as long as there wasn’t the usual gang of fat cunts in Lycra  )

The only way with a Mustang is restomod,  basically plant a new one in a classic one with the T6 manual, they really do not drive like they look even in 45k mint Mach 1 form.

Less exotic maybe, but 226k is fairly exotic, but what a car, you really cannot beat a well built classic restomod.

Yeah I’m sure the dream is better than the reality. Much like the mentioned lambo countach. But I would take one regardless. Just to say I have one. I think one of the problems of older classic cars is that whilst they are muscular v8’s the reality is performance wise outclassed by modern vehicles with everything computerised for maximum performance as well as lightweight materials. But they will be forever cool regardless.

Cosworth is nothing special in any Ford form, this says it all.

But take a 2.3 duratec, bore to 2.5 with forged internals and add a turbo and you have a fast ford engine,

The question was what is your dream car, not what is your dream car at X amount.

Now just using it as an example since it was mentioned a Ferrari 288 GTO is going to be what, 5,6 maybe 10 times or more expensive than the Alfa. Outside of a racetrack, and being a completely shit hot driver, would you ever see an improvement? Possibly a second or 2 per lap but doubt it would ever get close on the entertainment side.

As of this evening, possibly a Caterham.

The 250 is obviously THE classic Ferrari, maybe even THE classic car. (If such a thing exists )
But I grew up in the 80’s, so for me the 288 is more aesthetically pleasing.

Done it a few times with big V8 yanks, there is no doubt they turn heads, drove the Mustang over Tower Bridge on a hot summers day, old buildings were forgotten.

On our roads though, and traffic, they are no fun, give off too much heat, drink fuel, do not go round corners very well and you tire of it quickly, while a well sorted 60,s or 70,s British car is a hell of a lot more fun. and you can find a space to park them and they fit a standard garage.

Everything about them is impractical! But I would still have one!lol.
And as far as putting them in an average size garage, you’d struggle to get an everyday car in them nowadays. And even if you could you can’t open the door and get out.

That is what British or European classics are for :D.

Come to think of it, I have owned 3, but the most head turning and attention attracting classic I have had, was a Renault 16. also the most practical, comfortable and damn right pleasurable to drive.

Id have to take your word for the performance on the Renault 16. But certainly looks wise it doesn’t do a thing for me I’m afraid. The same with the vast majority of British vehicles. To me it was like they really made the effort to build the ugliest cars they could. And my dad seemed to have a knack of getting them. Austin maxi….step forward!
