Loved a bit of ZZ Top back in the 80's during my Biker days, used to listen to their album "Eliminator" over and over

Sad news indeed.    ZZ Top one of my favourite bands. Saw them in concert back in the late 80's .One of the best live bands I've seen. When they played the song "Legs" had a line of leggy beauties come on the stage playing saxophones that lit up . "Stages" one of my all time favourite songs

"Legs"

I always think of that song when I see a nice pair of legs pass by. RIP  :(

Yep saw then a few times live and a great live act . Eliminator is great but i think Degüello is even better.
Far too young to go but what a life !

I saw ZZ at Leeds Uni in the late 1970's.
Billy Gibbons is a much under-rated blues guitarist IMHO
Goodbye Dusty.

#MeToo. A much purer Blues vibe. Eliminator had great songs and I'm into those too, but the robotic, computerised rhythm track with bass and guitar over the top formula doesn't quite cut it in the same way for me.

Not knocking Eliminator though, it paid for their very nice 'pensions' many times over. Just a shame Dusty didn't get to enjoy too much of it.

Yes I think Eliminator was the start of a slightly different sound for them and perhaps the start of becoming more popular  :unknown:

I do like a lot of their older stuff and as you say it had a more blues / R&B vibe to it, I do listen to a "Best of" double album every so often and it's great as it has songs from across a few decades on it.
Some of those old songs have lyrics that you just wouldn't get away with these days like "Mexican Blackbird" about a prostitute and contains the following lyrics -
They all call her her, "Puta"
'Cause no one really knows her name
She works the cantina
Dancin' and a-lovin's her trade
Her mama was Mez'can
And her daddy was the ace of spades

I am the opposite.  Not a fan of their blues type early tracks but more into their later stuff like "Legs", "sharp dressed man", "stages" and "rough boy" but I guess all groups develop a style over the years.

Not forgetting " woke up with wood" and "planet of women"

Nearly 40, Eliminator was released in 1983.

Actually an awful lot of smutty lyrics in their songs, proper old school bloke stuff
They also had a song called Velcro fly  ;)

I love both of the ZZ sounds.  The first albums are raw and so bluesy.....my personal fave is Tejas - just love the overall sound of the album.  But I appreciate how they changed their sound with Eliminator, Afterburner and Recycler.  Rough Boy is a great example of how they mixed the electro sound with the blues/rock edge.
Dusty Hill will be missed.  I am gutted I never got to see them live (by them I mean Billy, Dusty and Frank).  Like previously mentioned Billy Gibbons is a fantastic guitarist and hugely under rated....
Fave ZZ tunes .....
