I trade the SPCE stock so I'm obviously hoping it will be a successful flight, but even if I wasn't, I admire Branson (he's a legend, and 'doers' like him always attract haters) and love what he's doing.

I did the opposite and shorted it. Was down a lot on Thursday evening but thank god the stock dropped 6%ish on Friday so in green now. We will have to see if the stock pumps tomorrow but I think it won’t because the company itself doesn’t make money, and it’s a “sell the news” event that pumped the stock

Probably the worst thing he did was sue the NHS while he lives on a private island. Dude is a definition of a cunt . Also has the nerve to ask government to bail out his airline while he happily spends millions just to be first into space. Smh😣😴

Getting there isn't the problem.................getting back is the important bit

Tbh, I'm not usually much of a hater of the billionaire bunch, but I think terrible timing for Branson and Bezos doing this when the whole world is in turmoil. Hopefully there will be some good that comes out of it in terms of technology advancement.

Depends how you look at it though and whether you think he personally sued them or one of his companies which are run as independent businesses took the action.
The whole thing surrounded a dodgy / flawed process for allocating contracts that Virgin care lost out on however he / virgin care also have a responsibility to all the employees of that company.
So is he supposed to turn a blind eye just because he has personal wealth  :unknown:

Crucially the NHS settled out of court which basically tells me virgin care had a valid case so instead of blaming Branson perhaps we should blame those in charge of allocating the contracts, probably find out the contracts went to family / mates of those in charge again

Yeah but they have been working on this for about 15 years and there's always some kind of turmoil going on so at some point you have to just get on with it

I'll pass on the chance of going to space, but wish everyone else a safe return.  I like his Virgin Lounges, especially the Edinburgh one with views over St Andrews Square.

The pandemic has nothing to do with private companies pushing the boundaries of human knowledge. If anything, it's admirable that it's being done during a pandemic because so many companies have used this crisis as an excuse for their inefficiency, job-losses and cutting down.

At this point it's just a vulgar novelty like a bearded lady at a Victorian fairground. "I'm a billionaire and my space mission is bigger than yours!"

Yesterday morning - the day was looking great.

We were gonna bring it home AND we finally got to fire Branson into space!

Yesterday evening was shit when I found out Branson was the only thing 'coming home'.

(i don't have a major problem with Britain's Grinniest Death Wish Billionaire, other than that bit where he asked for a bailout and spent mega money going into space)

Yayyyy I was right, stock dropped 15% 🤠🤠

Can't blame him for asking government to bail out his airline as all the airline companies were doing it. Like a lot of businesses the aviation industry has been badly hit by the pandemic which will take a long time to recover from.

They did it!!
Depends on your definition of "it" or space to be more exact.
A common definition of space is known as the Kármán Line, an imaginary boundary 100 kilometers above sea level. In theory, once this 100 km line is crossed, the atmosphere becomes too thin to provide enough lift for conventional aircraft to maintain flight. At this altitude, a conventional plane would need to reach orbital velocity or risk falling back to Earth. The world governing body for aeronautic and astronautic records, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), and many other organizations use the Kármán Line as a way of determining when space flight has been achieved.

Branson "only" made it to about 60km, FWIW Bezos plans to reach an altitude of 100km.
Of course both are great achievements, less than 120 years ago marked the first powered flight and now private companies are reaching space.

I wouldn't call what Bezos has done a great achievement yet, he has spent billions, he started 2 years before SpaceX and 6 years before Rocket Lab, and so far has very little to show for it

Meanwhile in Texas SpaceX are building the most powerful and therefore the best rocket ever, and will launch it soon

I think Felix Baumgartner put them all to shame - although he was less than 40 km up.

I was impressed with James May "going to the edge of space" in a NASA plane - but when I looked it up on wikipedia he "only" went up around half the height felix did.
