Very sad news. I loved Toots & The Maytals. R.I.P. Toots - and thanks for all the memories and great songs.

in the early/mid 80's I had just moved to a bedsit in London and after moving all my stuff in (took a grand total of about 15 minutes) I decided to wander down the road and explore the neighborhood. After about 3/4 of a mile I came to a little park with a stage at one end with a reggae band playing, which I watched for a while then continued into some very crowded streets and sound systems dotted about - I had accidentally stumbled upon the Notting Hill Carnival!

As I negotiated my way down one crowded road a tune came on over one set of huge speakers and as though someone had flicked a switch every single person in the street as far as I could see suddenly started bouncing up and down and singing along ... it was quite spectacular. I moved on and a couple of streets later the same tune started to play from a different sound system, and exactly the same thing happened, the whole street full of people started bouncing up and down again. It was really quite wonderful. This must have happened 3 or 4 times during my wandering about - this would have been on the Sunday because I phoned a friend and went back again with him on the Monday.

Thanks OP, hadn't heard about this.

The Clash did a great version of Pressure Drop..... proabably as good as their version of Police & Thieves.

I actually think he was one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Listen to "54 46 Was My Number"..... People not familiar with the song assume it's gonna be a Motown stomper by someone like Otis Redding until the reggae beat kicks. Very sad to hear of his demise. RIP Toots.

I actually caught them live a year or two back at an East London free festival put on by the council.  Was a great sight to see young and old, all races and classes (OK, a few more hipsters and yummy mummies in the audience than would have played to back in the day...) soaking up the hits.

Anyway, they could do more than 60s ska, 'Funky Kingston': External Link/Members Only

"54 46 Was My Number".

Supposedly his prison number when he was banged up previously.

Supposedly his prison number when he was banged up previously.

Well documented (and apparent from the lyrics).

The song was at one point better known as the sampled bassline of 'Street Tuff' by the Rebel MC (lucky husband of Maria Whittaker).

Saw him with Maytals supporting Rolling Stones in Helsinki. Excellent bonus.
