in the early/mid 80's I had just moved to a bedsit in London and after moving all my stuff in (took a grand total of about 15 minutes) I decided to wander down the road and explore the neighborhood. After about 3/4 of a mile I came to a little park with a stage at one end with a reggae band playing, which I watched for a while then continued into some very crowded streets and sound systems dotted about - I had accidentally stumbled upon the Notting Hill Carnival!
As I negotiated my way down one crowded road a tune came on over one set of huge speakers and as though someone had flicked a switch every single person in the street as far as I could see suddenly started bouncing up and down and singing along ... it was quite spectacular. I moved on and a couple of streets later the same tune started to play from a different sound system, and exactly the same thing happened, the whole street full of people started bouncing up and down again. It was really quite wonderful. This must have happened 3 or 4 times during my wandering about - this would have been on the Sunday because I phoned a friend and went back again with him on the Monday.
