I'm another Daniel Craig fan. The Timothy Dalton, Pierce Morgan films just felt like the franchise was just going through the motions at that point.

I think it's fair to say that he saved the franchise.

I'm actually not a Bond fan and think the send-up of Bond obsessives in Alan Partridge was bang-on.

OK, showing my age there really. I'm more aware of Carry On films than actually having seen many but I find the phenomena and cast fascinating.

Next James Bond, what about Gerard Butler, he is younger than Daniel Craig?

As the films dont follow the books there is no reason for bond to be male. As for him being scottish? i havent read the books, but i have read a biography of ian fleming, he was looking to give bond an authentic cv, so he put down that after being expelled from eton, bond went to fettes college, a well known private school in edinburgh. Also the school of Bruce-lockhart, whose book, memoirs of a British agent, was well known back in the day. Bruce-lockhart was imprisoned in the Kremlin, and subsequently rose fairly high in m.1.5. There is of course only one bond, that was connery, the later films are just parodies.

I was a fan of Sean Connery until I saw him more than half cut at Lyford Cay Club.
Having said that think The Rock was a great film.

Lyford Gay Club????

I posted this at 4.56pm after logging on and hitting ‘new replies’. It was in reply to several posts on Bond but recognising it was off topic of the thread. I didn’t notice that Anth had created a new thread a few hours previously. I was accused of taking the piss, which was not correct. I couldn’t see any way of moving it so have copied it here, though honestly I don’t know why I bother. Sadly I don’t keep up with the forum enough these days to judge the degree of moderation or Draconianism. No offence was intended.

Off topic yes, but as everyone’s had their say on Bond I’ll add mine.

The James Bond of the books is white, Scottish (son of a Scottish father, Andrew Bond, of Glencoe, and a Swiss mother, Monique Delacroix), very alpha-male (by today’s standards somewhat racist, homophobic and sexist). He likes to have sex with beautiful women. Sean Connery, the original film character, has also been described as very much fitting the part in so many ways, even down to the famous quote, “Sometimes a woman needs a good slap” (and he didn’t mean it in a particularly bad way, it meant the sort of light slap across the face considered to rescue a woman from a bout of hysteria.)

I’m not identifying with him — Connery or Bond! But I was brought up on the books and, although I recognize the cinema franchise as a different medium, still instinctively measure the films against the character in the books.

Kind regards.

Didnt know that, you have actually read the books? well done, i have only seen one film, with the memorable character, odd job, think that was Goldfinger, i was under 10 anyway.

Sean Connery from the point of view that he was a fellow Scot. However I think Timothy Dalton probably fits best from the perspective of Ian Fleming in that Bond is a sadist, the original novels suggest this.

The only other credible Bond was Pierce Brosnan, the rest of them were interlopers.

Or Henry Cavill who's British but perhaps too well known for playing Superman

Fleming himself was a flaggellant, or a flaggellomane, maybe both.

His nonfiction work Thrilling Cities contains a description of Tokyo saunas where he protests a bit too much about "nothing untoward" being on offer :D

Jeremy Corbyn is not doing anything, he could order a carrot juice shaken not stirred, he could deal with the baddies by boring him to death talking about his allotment.
Diane Abbott could be the Bond girl, imagine her coming out of the sea in a tiny bikini. :vomit: :vomit: :vomit:

I recently heard someone tipping Taron Egerton, can't remember who but given The Kingsmen films maybe not such an outside bet.

Back to the question asked.

1/ Connery- original and best.

2/ Dalton-didn't like him at the time but watching again he's the equal of Connery nearly.

3/ Craig-gritty and does a fine job.

4/ Brosnan-not too bad but far too good looking for his own good.

5/ Lazenby-never really stretched his legs and took bad advice from his mentor. Would've been better doing 2 or 3 then moving onto other roles.

6/ Moore-cheesey and camp but he never took himself too seriously so you can't dislike the guy. Let's just say he fitted the brief at the time.

7/Niven- You can say many things about him but Bond he did not fit.

8/ Holness- never heard the radio play but I'm guessing this is down to screen versions. Also never actually played the sax on Baker Street by Jerry Rafferty.

Not trying to highjack the thread, but along with the films and actors, one could also include favourite Bond theme songs.

There's such a diversity of songs, singers and styles from different eras it's very hard to pick a single favourite.

I love so many of them, but I'd have to pick Shirley Bassey singing 'Goldfinger' as my number one.

My favourite James Bond was Sean Connery.

I think they should take a more meaner stance with the character and cast Tom Hardy as a "take no shit, James Bond".

He also goes back to his family estate in Skyfall, in Glen Coe on the Scottish Highlands.

Exactly, and when he is given his fathers old hunting rifle, it has the letters AB on the side, which could be for A. Bond, but actually is a nod to Albert Broccoli who was the film producer who took the franchise to the big screen.  His daughter Barbara Brocolli is listed in the credits as producer for the more recent films.

Its only after watching Austin Powers that you realise how cheesy the bond films are

My order would be
1. Craig
2.Brosnan
3.Connery
4.Moore
5.Dalton
6.Lazenby

No.......but the William Tell overture followed by the 1812 overture always did it for me. :D

Given the chance I play some King Crimson. The weird time signatures and frankly the sheer scariness of it, has enhanced some shags over the years. Who needs drugs?  :unknown:

I'd also add  Timothy Dalton who I initially hated. However in rewatching I thought he was excellent in The Living Daylights and Licence to Kill.
He's probably the closest - other than Daniel Craig in Casino Royale--to Ian Fleming's interpretation of Bond as cold, hard and ruthless.
I think he suffered massively from following on from Roger Moore who towards the end had become a bit of a joke. People just weren't ready for Dalton's hard edged portrail.
