I have always detested festivals, and against my better judgement have attended many in the past. But reading this:

..almost makes me feel wistful about Glasto.

I guess the upside of not having it this year is that we'll be spared all the posturing about climate change, inequality (you gotta laugh when top acts at festivals like Glasto are trousering north of a million for sixty minutes of performance) BLM and all the other bollocks we're beaten over the head with every day.

I have to admit to liking the 'Green' ethic and then you see the tons of rubbish and perfectly good stuff, tents sleeping bags and other camping stuff, just abandoned and dumped at the end of the festival.

Yeah always makes me laugh how the venue resembles a pikey camp site once they've done a runner or somewhere that a tornado has just ripped through, think the irony last time was when it looked like this after they had just listened to David Attenborough talking about plastic waste  :sarcastic:

I believe they claim (As do the people who leave their tents / assorted shit everywhere) that things like tents are packed up and given to homeless people or some other cause. So that's alright then, guilt assuaged

Blackpool Rock, I believe that you are correct and the rubbish is sorted, filtered and put to good use where possible.

The old stuff (if it's good enough nick) will get donated. Bath/Bristol/Exeter all have homeless charities that have benefited from this.

From what I know from the top level management of the site, Eavis is keen that 85+% of of the crap left is recycled.
He walks the walk as well as talks the talk.

Offline B4bcock

The question is, are the festival goers asked to take their rubbish etc with them or are they told it's ok to leave it and litter up the site as it will be recycled?

Offline lostandfound

Well there isn't a political issue at all. The premise that it's lefties / libtards / greenies littering is garbage. Glasto does not sell tickets on the basis of political persuasion.

I should imagine the amount of drugs that get pissed out into the local watercourse doesn't do the poor fish much good. Or perhaps they actually enjoy it. Anyone know any fish?

I've known a few WG's who've smelt a bit fishy, but definitely weren't mermaids.

And I expect that the number of women who are on the pill that go to festivals is probably higher than average.

I read some story a whille back that said all the oestregen they pee and that finds its way into the mains water supply is making men less, er, priapic than they might otherwise be.

I've a hard enough time as it is, at my age, so I'll avoid Somerset from now on.

This is very true, certainly in the sense that sperm levels in men have dropped considerably over recent years, and this is considered a likely or at least possible cause.

I drink bottled Springwater, so my priapism is completely unaffected.

If the oestrogen in the water doesn't make you floppy, the scrumpy definitely will.   :)

OK, but I'm C1-C2 borderline, with hard Left origins, so I can't shake the idea that drinking bottled water is bourgeois.

Given a choice between being labelled petit bourgeois and not being able to get rock hard, you can call me Nigel from Islington any time you like  :P

Some years back now, a friend of mine attended. When I asked him what it was like, he admitted that he had no memory whatsoever of the entire weekend.

Perhaps that's why every-fucking-where you go now you see people with their faces buried in their phones. They actually don't get to experience anything real, they stream it to their mates on Arsebook to 'impress' them, or they play it back later.

But as for remembering the actual joy of being there? Nah .

In my friends case, his memory loss was chemically induced. Apparently, he was so out of it at one point, his friends put him in his tent with a colouring book and some crayons to keep him occupied. When they checked on him, they discovered that he'd ignored the book, and attempted to colour himself in.

There's a great quote of P J O'Rourke's where he said something like that there's no point in thinking much about past events. It's not like you can go back and live through them again. If they were any good, you'd remember them. And if they were really good, there's probably still a warrant out.

This could be something for useful for Greta Thunburg to do, tidying up the place, hopefully it will take her 12 months just in time for the next festival of the great unwashed

They are showing some complete headline acts to compensate for no Glasto this year. Can't say I'm that bothered as I can't do with all the rappers and female warblers.

But even acts I like, such as The Who, The Stones, Metallica, Arctic Monkeys, Bowie, Ray Davies and Neil Young seem to lose something on that Pyramid Stage. I can't put my finger on it, but there is just something about Glasto that irritates me, no matter who is performing. Maybe it's all that silly flag waving.

She can start closer to home.    She attended an Extinction Rebellion demo in Bristol a few months ago.   Many travelled in by coach and when the kids got home they left them looking like one of the above Glasto pics - full of rubbish they should have taken home and recycled.

It's fine, just like usual they'll let the grown-ups clear up their mess after them

I doubt I'll ever be inclined to lash out for a ticket for Glyndebourne but I don't feel the need to make culture war threads on a paid-for sex buyers' site about it :sarcastic:

Especially if Gary Linekar is involved in selling them, yes.

This'll be the performance from the BBC Radio Theatre a few months ago?

It was indeed brilliant. I suspect there was a fair bit of stuff on a backing track which they were playing along with (extra strings for example) but it seemed to me like all the vocals and everything else on stage, was played live.

Very impressive, including Jeff Lynne's voice (he must be mid-70s by now).

His voice which was never great in my view was pretty good that day, he also looked good I thought, I love his Wild Is The Wind, one of my fave Bowie songs though I prefer George Michaels version now. And it was at Glastonbury that he felt he got his first taste of being appreciated in 1971, yes great set and one of the last times his voice live sounded all right for me.

I would of been interested in how Paul McCartney would of faired their this year as his voice was totally gone last time I saw him on the TV singing live, it was atrocious.

I will honest Paul McCartney is probably one of the nicest fellas I have worked with, he has always been an idol of mine and in 2012, he was terrible, but it only cost us £1...so dread to think what his performance would have been like this year. Like Elton John his time is up.. his voice is shot to pieces and it’s so sad they try to ride the wave of their previous success.

Elton is supposed to be retiring to spend more time with his kids but its been the longest goodbye in history. His old mate Rod Stewart had a dig at him about it a while back. And talking of Rod he can still sing but not rock and pop, crooning is his forte now and bloody good I think he has been with his American Songbook series all of which I have and the best of compilation. However, in the last few years he has been singing pop and writing new songs, not very good in my view.

McCartney has had a great and long run though of course but I would imagine he really doesn't want to accept and really face the fact he cant sing anymore, and to play Glastonbury must of been very appealing. We shall see if he does play next year instead. The best of the legends in recent years for me was Barry Gibb, he cant do the falsetto that well anymore but quite good overall I thought. Absolutely and embarrassingly bad was Neil Diamond.

Tend to agree about Rod, although he can’t really re-create his old songs in the original key it was written.

The last time I was in Glastonbury was in 2016 and to see Barry Gibb on stage with Coldplay was a highlight, his falsetto is not as strong but he does still hold a tune.  I do have a soft spot for Coldplay so do tend to try to catch all their concerts, their best was in São Paulo as the crowd was amazing,,

Neil Diamond so sad another who should be told the truth that he’s lost it..

I am quite fortunate being in the Events industry I am lucky I have a job I really enjoy...

Coldplay at Glastonbury I think in 2016 was on last night with Gibb, he was still good I thought but yes his falsetto isn't strong anymore. I am not a big Coldplay fan but don't mind them, I find many of their songs sound the same.

Spot on about Rods voice and its not surprising he cant recreate the songs in the original key as his voice has changed but he also had surgery on it, he wasn't even sure he would be able to sing again at one time. In my case I didn't really like Rods music when I was younger but like it more and more including his classic early albums as I have got older. Whereas I still like Elton but find much of his music bland, Too Low For Zero is his last good album that I like. And similar with Bowie, Station to Station is his last good album I like, unlike some I don't like his Berlin trilogy as albums though I do like some of the individual songs on them, Lodger is a pile in my book. By far Hunky Dory and Ziggy are his best albums.

I've dabbled in the softer edges of and a mate works in PR so I keep a hand in.  A lot of it is tedious and standing around though.
