The Undeclared War, season 2, on Channel 4 streaming.

GCHQ and cyber warfare with those pesky Russians & Chinese, with Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead) of all people. Reminds me in a strange way of the original Quatermass TV dramas.
I think I might have seen season 1.

Is it any good?

Have to agree, a steaming pile of shite, should have been axed after the first episode. About as funny as having toothache, kidney stones, gout and a migraine all at the same time

Always thought it was only me that had that view of it.

It’s ok, not brilliant.

After the major disappointments of the second series of Amandaland and of Mackenzie Crook’s Small Prophets – and in view of the “concept”, which could have gone horribly wrong – I approached Ann Droid (with Sue Johnston and Diane Morgan, BBC1 last night) with caution, and indeed an expectation that I would probably switch off.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.  Beautifully done, very funny and often poignant.  Outstanding television.

I’m pleased to see that Digital Spy gave it five stars, calling it "sharp, witty and gorgeously funny", adding: "Dark undertones may weave in and out, but the heart and the laughter win out every time making it an absolute must-watch."

Ann Droid.

Seen the trailer and thought it looked shit. Then it started getting 5 star reviews so thought I'd give it a chance.

Should've trusted my gut feeling, utterly devoid of any laughs or even a smile which is a bit of a shame as I really like Diane Morgan usually.

I watched the second episode of Ann Droid last night – silly, boring and unfunny; with pointless, two-dimensional characters.

I don’t think this has happened to me before – thinking the first episode of something was brilliant (see above) and taking no pleasure whatsoever in the second.  It was as though different people had written the script.

I’m now lining up behind Davey Dykes – and indeed my conspiracy theorist friend, who hated it (and he likes Diane Morgan so much he says he’d marry her if she were free).

I may try the third episode, but with low expectations.

Again, completely agree with you. Really enjoyed the first episode, thought the second was 1 or 2 stars out of 5. Really unfunny, and I find Diane Morgan's robot voice really annoying. Will not be watching the rest.

Last night I watched 'The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb' (External Link/Members Only). It is a very dark and surreal stop-motion film about a miniature baby being born and taken in by government agents for experimentation. I remember reading a glowing review of it in Empire magazine when it came out in 1993 and I was a kid. The review had some screenshots and it looked like a really bizarre film. I never watched it at the time but it was stuck in the back of my head ever since. I suddenly remembered it last night and since I still like watching films that are a bit different I looked it up and streamed it.

It was okay, gets a lot of kudos from me just for being a break from the norm. The gothic setting reminded me of the Tim Burton films of the time. I suspect there were a bunch of subtle themes running through the film which were just lost on me which might be a reason why I didn't think it was as amazing as the Empire magazine reviewer did in 1993.

Watched first part of The Rapture on BBC1 last night and quite enjoyed it. Second part is on tonight.

I think the women who has lead role is pretty excellent, seen her before somewhere. I think it might've been a episode of Inside no. 9 but would need to check.

Up The Catalogue (2024). Presenter Haily Cartin finds herself selling an endless supply of questionable products on a mysterious TV shopping channel. Low budget British film seemingly satirizing consumerism and the darker side of the media, UTC is far too surreal and weird to be enjoyable, bizarre can only get you so far, UTC ultimately falls over the edge and never recovers. For once I'm not going to grade this movie, it's so far left field that rating it honestly would be a challenge. Available on M4uhd stream.

Cruel Hands (2026). Mother and son flee from an abusive husband to an abandoned farmhouse, a massive bush fire rages nearby. Indie Australian thriller that remains fairly low key for most of its relatively short running time, tense enough to keep you interested, acting and writing above par. B+ Available on Rido Movies stream.

Couture (2026). Three very different women's lives intersect during Fashion week in Paris. A largely flat, listless drama that never successfully weaves together its trio of narratives, the main character gets the best storyline but the other two are simply never interesting enough to maintain your attention. Stars Angelina Jolie (not my favourite actress to be honest) but she's actually very watchable, shame about the film itself but there you go.  C-  Available on RidoMovies stream.

I enjoyed it. Best show since Small Prophets

I started with Ann Droid episode 3 and enjoyed all except the cringe guitar solo by the too stupid son.
Went back to episodes 1 and two and enjoyed them - I like anything Sue Johnston has been in like "Waking the dead", Downton Abbey, Corrie, Brooky etc

I duly sat through Episode 3 of Ann Droid last night – as stony-faced as during Episode 2.  This after the brilliance of Episode 1.  Very odd.

So I’m off, though I’m aware that some others (such as Advent 2016) still like it.

Eye in the Sky (2015), on BBC the other night and presumably available on iPlayer.

Nauseating.

Probably the most shamelessly manipulative film I have ever seen, focusing on a contrived ethical dilemma.  Do you launch a missile attack on a terrorist cell where the terrorists are preparing an imminent suicide bomb attack that will indubitably kill around 80 people, when a photogenic black tot is selling home-made bread on a table just outside the building?

Cue endless implausible agonising involving various members of the "on the case" military (including the launch team of two, who exude compassion from every pore) and, back in a war room in Blighty, a general, the Attorney General and others, as well as remote input from the Foreign Secretary and the US Secretary of State.

Quite well made, but fake as fuck.  Would the "dilemma" have been as acute – indeed, would the film have been made – if the person at risk were and ugly old wino?

OK, war is a terrible business; and no-one likes killing innocent people (though many don't give a damn).

But we knew that already.

As for the film, think its one of the best spiderman movies, and on youtube, the studio considered the darker side of spiderman, and his mutation

Welcome Home Baby (2025). A paramedic in Berlin comes into an inheritance upon the death of her estranged father, a large sprawling house deep in the Austrian countryside. Austro German folk horror that starts off with a bang (well a self immolation actually), the rest of the film doesn't quite have the same oomph as the opening but there's still enough dread and menace to keep the audience interested. Director Andreas Prochaska presents us with some wonderful imagery, the dreamlike sequences are visually powerful, colourful and disturbing, he's less assured when it comes to the narrative though which can be confusing at times, the ending for instance is annoyingly ambiguous.  B-   Available on Lookmovie2 stream.

The Isolate Thief (2026). At the end of the American civil war, a young woman caretaker at a lonely Union outpost confronts a band of thieves looking for stolen gold. In recent years there have been a handful of pseudo feminist Westerns, women making a stand in what has traditionally been a macho/masculine genre and usually coming out on top against the odds. The Isolate Thief isn't quite up there with the best of them (a more substantial film for example was the 2014 movie The Keeping Room), some of the mysoginistic violence is hard to stomach, still it's a tense thrilling watch and worth seeking out. Stars Sean Bean and Mackenzie Foy. B   Available on M4uhd stream.

Hungry (2026). A group of hapless tourists are stranded in the Louisiana swamplands and end up getting pursued by an angry hippopotamus. I suppose it had to happen, we've had piranhas, sharks, crocodiles and now a raging hippo enters the horror animal scene. B movie creature features can be fun if you have the right mixture of scares and black humour, it papers over the cardboard characters and iffy writing but Hungry does neither and the hippo in question isn't particularly frightening, Hungry is best avoided. D  Available on Lookmovie2.

I saw the trailer for Primetime which is coming to cinemas next month. I binged the TV show it was based on (To Catch A Predator) on YouTube a while ago and found it fascinating, it was a mix of horror and amusement as some of the predators were very odd and said funny things to try to get out of trouble. The trailer looked really decent, Robert Patterson looks great as the host Chris Hansen. I don't go to the cinema often these days but think I'd likely check it out.

Watched last night. I thought the CGI was appalling - especially the Resident Evil shaved zombie baboons… ludicrous.

Worth a watch (and TBF, fairly watchable for the most part) as a standalone film, but not patch on the first outing - galaxies apart. Take it with a pinch of salt, don’t compare it with the original, and it’s enjoyable enough.

Connie Neilsen looking absolutely wonderful still.

Hahaha funnily enough just started this series over the weekend

Rise of the Footjobsoldier (sorry couldn't resist)  - 8/10. First half really strong but last part falls away as focus shifts away from main character Carlton Leach

ROTF2 - 6/10. Basically rinse and repeat of the first movie. Cocaine and hookers every other scene.... not as fun as it sounds in reality.

ROTF3 - The Pat Tate Story - 7/10. Pat Tate is a more interesting main character even though hes a horrible piece of work. Cocaine hookers and beating up "cunts". Storyline is terrible though

ROTF4 Marbella - 8/10. Actually a decent storyline and more interesting characters. The timeline is all messed up but a easy watch at 1:25.

Ive got Origins and Vengeance left to watch, the latter especially is meant to be good. The newest one (Retribution) is out in cinemas later this year.

Overall the series isnt bad. Craig Fairbass as Pat Tate is easy to watch. Just a horrible piece of work but you are rooting for. Storylines are way weaker then Snatch, Layer Cake, Green Street, Football Factory etc.
