I recently caught "Mercy" (Chris Pratt, Rebecca Fergusson). Very similar premise to Minority Report, brought into the AI age. I found it silly on several levels - the fact that the "trial" resembled nothing like due process, especially for such an ultra-litigious country like the US, and also the predictable "human breaks AI by asking difficult questions, AI somehow reverts to humanity" trope.

There were a couple of twists, the first I saw coming from a mile away, the second caught me completely by surprise.

5/10, not unpleasant popcorn fare.

Indeed.

By contrast (this may be a controversial view), I think that Robert de Niro is over-rated.

Now that Sky have added HBO Max to my package, I'm tempted by the positive reviews for The Pitt. The blurb makes it sound like a gorier version of Casualty . Anyone seen it and have an opinion?

I agree. Truth to tell, I don’t really rate him these days. However, back in the days of Midnight Run, Once Upon a Time in America, etc. he was very good for sure.

I thought they were all pretty dull TBH, especially the first one (not being a fan of Emily Blunt didn’t help).

I much prefer The Silence (2019) with Stanley Tucci.

In The Deer hunter, the ending scene, both de Niro and Walken probably deliver one of the finest acting ive seen.

Yeah, agreed.

He's a class act 🎬.

Not to mention the comedies, Meet the Parents etc.

Taxi Driver (1976)
Raging Bull (1980)
True Confessions (1981)
The King Of Comedy (1983)
Jackie Brown (1997)

Five films, five very different performances, De Niro showed great versatility particularly during the 70s/80s. Personally I feel his best films were the ones he made with Martin Scorsese, Scorsese seemed to bring the best out of him in terms of performance, they worked very well together. A fine actor but I prefer the younger, earlier De Niro, the films were more interesting in my humble opinion.

Of a similar ilk - I'd strongly recommend Manchester by the Sea.
About a guy who returns to his hometown after his brother passes away and to look after his nephew.

Some fantastic acting, a twist that feels authentic to the story and a real gut punch.

Don't be ashamed, bttf is a great movie. Lea Thompson is pretty cute as a bonus and has a great pair which she gets out in All The Right Moves (early tom cruise movie) which is a shit film even on VHS fast forward. Fortunately you don't have to do that anymore to find the good bit

I agree stamp, BTTF gets a thumbs up from me, a very good example of a big budget Hollywood movie that's actually entertaining, it doesn't happen very often nowadays.

I didn't watch it.  Your last two sentences demonstrate why, for me, that was the right decision.

Even unsavoury people deserve to have the truth told about them, especially – though not exclusively – if the events depicted are recent.

Indeed I'm still seething about Shakespeare's depiction of Macbeth, who was King of Scotland from 1040 until 1057.  He did not murder Duncan, the previous king, at his (Macbeth’s) castle.  On the contrary, Duncan led a "special military operation" into Macbeth's territory and was killed in action at the Battle of Bothnagowan.

I think it's time to rehabilitate Macbeth’s reputation!

Koln 75, a German film about the legendary concert given by jazz pianist Keith Jarrett after hours at The Cologne. Opera House in 1975, the recording of which went on the become the biggest selling solo jazz record in history. The concert was organised by an 18 year old fan and was in trouble almost from the moment she had sold all the tickets, Jarrett was unwell and really did not want to play, and what should have been the coupe de grace was that the piano that was provided for the concert was a junk / hack model,  far from a concert quality instrument. The 2 hour film set out all the problems that were encountered, including the desperate efforts to get the piano in shape in time and the changes Jarrett had to make to his playing technique. Streaming on Apple TV and Prime Video.

Just in case anyone isn’t familiar with The Koln Concert recording here is a link to the full audio recording on YouTube:

Just caught up with Last one laughing on Amazon. Enjoyed both series of the UK version, not overly keen on the Irish version and currently around halfway through the Canadian version which is fairly good so far.

Certainly worth a watch and I normally hate these type of reality games.

Shooter, 2007, 124 min, staring Mark Wahlberg, Kate Mara, Danny Glover & Michael Peña. A rogue ex- Marine sniper gets framed for a kill he didn’t do and takes his revenge, and also gets off with the widow of his late Marine buddy. A bit formulaic but holds your attention. The joint British/Swedish version of Wallander, four series of the Swedish detective streaming on Channel 4+ , with Kenneth Brannah in the lead role, the delectable Sarah Smart and a very young and callow Tom Higgleston. They max the Swedish angst on this one, the surprisingly trigger happy Brannah weeps his way through large parts. Superb locations and photography.

I just watched that. I really liked it. A kind of mazy but tense movie following 4 characters through a heist in LA. Ending is a bit weak but still enjoyable. Mark Ruffalo plays the deadbeat cop so well and nice to see Halle Berry again

Agreed, also just watched it. Enjoyed most of it, don't think I'm giving up any spoilers when I say the final set of sequences seems to be a weak attempt to make a happy ending for all the "good" characters. Let the whole thing down in my opinion.

(Edit: Also, alot of the maths arounds Halle Berry's character didn't make much sense. She was employed as the new "bright young thing" to be "bait for the clients they couldn't land" at 42 years old?)

Sorry, Haters (2005). Post 9/11 New York City. A Muslim cab driver picks up a troubled woman and is led down a dark and dangerous path. Little known and given a limited release back in 2005, Sorry, Haters is a screwy, oddball drama that begins brightly but quickly goes downhill and by the end you're just left with a muddled mess of a movie. Stars Robin Wright who is actually rather good and about the only reason for staying the course with this film.  C-

The King Is Dead (2012). A young suburban couple resort to drastic measures in order to get rid of their troublesome neighbour. Australian comedy thriller that's never quite dark enough to be really funny, a more cutting edge approach would have made this film a real winner. C+

Blood And Money (2020). Ageing war veteran discovers loot from a casino robbery and is pursued by the robbers who want their money. Above average thriller, a bit slow overall but it's very watchable and stars the ever reliable Tom Berenger.  B

Young Sherlock. New TV series on Prime. I couldn't stop auto play in time for it not to cue up the first episode after I'd finished watching Borderlands.

Six episodes with a story arc running through as they investigate crimes in each one. You can tell that Guy Ritchie is involved as it has the feel and style of the RDJ films. There is no Watson but there are Mycroft, Moriarty and Lestrade, as well as other Holmes family members. The lead is another of the Fiennes dynasty and delightfully named Hero Fiennes Tiffin and uncle Joseph plays his dad.

The plots and action are engaging enough that I saw it through to the end, despite the three young leads turning in very strange stage school performances. Everyone else, including a blustering, conniving aristo in the form of Colin Firth, makes a much better fist of it.

Days of Forgotten by Kasabian plays over the opening titles and other non period tracks are used in Ritchie's usual way. It's not as smart as the BBC Benedict version and not as grand as the RDJ films but it does travel around the world with compelling sets and locations. EM

I see that there is a third series of Hidden Assets on BBC4. I thought the first two were excellent, the first one included the gorgeous presence of Angeline Ball, who I have lusted over ever since she was in the Commitments all those years ago.
Another great series, and I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to get round to it again, because I find it pulsatingly good, with lashings of sex and violence, but I'm almost at the end of the final series of Banshee. So good, and Lili Simmons, who played Rebecca Bowman, is another delectable screen presence.
I started watching Young Sherlock, but after about 20 minutes I'd had enough. I'm quite partial to the Guy Ritchie films feauturing Robert Downey Jr as Sherlock Holmes, but I find this new version bobbins. I think what clinched it for me was when the action stopped to allow retrospective discussion why one character had held back hitting another during the narrative.
Rubbish, and I'm not remotely convinced by the actors playing Holmes and Moriarty.
