Ok so this may seem like a really strange one.
I have a thing for Chinese and Thai girls and heard loads a good things about pinkpioni in Liverpool. I’m a little apprehensive to book now incase they went home for Chinese New Year.
So am I being a tit or am I being right to be a little sceptical

Personally I think that's pretty xenophobic. As the news has shown anyone can catch it.

I think you're slightly overreacting.

There are lots of Chinese SPs that haven't been to China ever or for many years.

Just watch out for your health as you would at any other time.

The fact is that we just need to get used to being in a world where the coronavirus exists alongside loads of other viruses.  The WHO and others are currently buying time for them to get a vaccine developed to be able to innoculate people against the virus, so they are taking precautions to slow the spread so it doesn't overwhelmed the health services of the world with cases and result in loads of deaths.

Remember approx 30,000 people die in the UK each year from flu related illnesses, so deaths from viruses particularly amongst vulnerable groups is not unusual.

Keep calm and keep shagging.

I think lumping Chinese and Thais together is a bit naive and there are outbreaks in many other countries including our own. You could be just as much at risk at the Casino if that’s your thing given how many of our Asian residents regularly visit them.

If you’re in a high risk group (age, pre-existing health conditions etc.) then it would be sensible to think about the risks. The current estimated mortality rate is anything between 2% and 11% according to the latest lancet paper.

Can I ask where you got that figure from?

Offline RandomGuy99

From the former chief medical officer of the UK who was interviewed by the BBC when the first flight arrived back from the China and the people onboard were being driven to the Wirral for quarantining.

Or see External Link/Members Only

The tables in there mention figures of 28,000 for all deaths with most being in the elderly age group as you would expect.

I'm actually quite shocked, but not shocked by those figures.

CV is a concern but no point panicking, main advice seems to be frequent handwashing.

Thanks for that. The figure of 28,000 is for a spike year. The average in the tables lies somewhere between 15 to 20k. However that aside you are falling into the trap of misinterpreting data ... but you are not alone  :)

Interestingly if you look at the corresponding report produced for winter 2017/18 the summary figures for previous years don’t match those in the table for 2018/19 linked to above?
External Link/Members Only

The reality is nobody knows a true number of deaths where flu is a contributory factor. The problem arises because of interpretation of the ‘excess winter deaths’ data. Needless to say there is an algorithm involved  :D
There are many contributing factors to the excess winter death figures including extreme cold itself as well as general respiratory illness including a range of viruses. More people die in winter full stop and the winter figure varies year on year (often with spikes). Those who end up in ICU/HDU in hospitals are subject to statutory recording procedures and if influenza (which will have been confirmed with a blood test) is considered a causative factor in their death, it will be recorded. This number is generally low usually much less than 1000 per year.

The problem arises in those deaths which occur ‘in the community’ and the accuracy of the involvement of ‘flu’. GPs will record the number of cases of ILIs (Influenza like illness) they encounter which then feeds into the weekly flu reports
A GP of an old dear who dies in a nursing home (and there are a great many such old folk) may enter pneumonia on the death certificate following an upper respiratory tract infection or an ILI, but influenza should only be declared in the presence of a positive blood test. It is highly possible therefore that too many of the excess deaths are attributed to Influenza involvement as in the link above? Often it is just a bad cold which debilitates an already debilitated patient.

I believe it has suited western governments in particular, to compare the coronavirus to seasonal flu and to exaggerate the number of deaths associated with the latter in order to alleviate panic on the basis that "this happens every year and we don't notice it". However it is looking as if this virus is not only more readily transmissible than seasonal flu (which is itself highly contagious), but is considerably more deadly. Seasonal flu has a mortality rate of around 0.1%. CV is at least 2% with a possibility of climbing much higher in my opinion even without any further mutations. Unlike seasonal flu which is pretty nasty for most but critical for a few. CV is appears is mild for a great many but critical for much higher numbers ... many of whom succumb.

It is unfortunately still early days in investigating this strain,  but as each day passes I am less optimistic about the progression of this virus and I think many of us may be mourning the unexpected deaths of loved ones in months to come? Especially if the loved one is an over 65 male like myself. I hope I am wrong?

Which no matter how you interpret them don't support the statement that flu kills 30,000 people each year in the UK?

I'm sure we'll all be fine.

Let's all hope that for once you are right

There have been Chinese in Liverpool since 1834. Define "home". A lot of them are more "English" than many white people

Yes there is a lot of panic about the corona virus, and yes we should all be careful, however, as pointed out above the WHO says that when you look at influenza (flu), 500million a year are taken seriously ill. Anything between 390,000 and 650,000 a year worldwide actually die from flu. Those most at risk are those with existing health problems especially where their immune system is compromised. Interestingly, the press never seem to mention how many people have contracted the corona virus and made a complete recovery, the reason being they prefer to publish the doom and gloom and always report the negative aspects!

I was talking to some NHS staff last night and it looks like the NHS is going to start additional screening of people that visit hospitals (seems a bit pointless as they'll already have been sitting in a waiting room with other patients before they get asked) to find out if they've been to Asia in the last few weeks.  If so, then they'll get turned away for surgery.

Staff looking after Corona virus patients are being offered triple pay.

And they passed to new legislation to allow the forced quarantining of people infected with Corona virus, so they are preparing to do what they need to do.
