Weight lifting is not pointless and some form of it is good for older guys. I'm sure there is a safe way to do it when you're 50.
For a grown man it's probably easier to get in to than running. I'm no expert to give precise advice but I'm sure you can find someone at the gym that can help.
If you spend years training your body to accumulate fat and be stagnant it will take effort to teach it to move around.
