A week is the mininum time to go, if you're going 6000 miles 2 weeks is better.
A grand for a week should be fine, but everyone spends different, if you like to drink, and generous with Ladydrinks, and want to stay in pricey hotels your budget will be high. I'm happy to pay 600-900b a night in decent hotels, if you only eat western food and not Thai this costs more.

There really is no point getting baht before you leave, because your bank will fuck you, there are numerous exchange booths at arrivals at Bkk airport, change some there, but you'll get a better rate in Patts.
