Author Topic: Journalism student - writing article about transference of sex work to online  (Read 1950 times)

Hi there,

I am a journalism student writing an article about the transference of sex work to online platforms. I have spoken to a member of admin at UK Punting, who has informed me that there might be some suspicion about anti-prostitution agendas on the site. My intention is not to promote any anti-prostitution agenda, in fact my article demonstrates the views of researchers and charities that support the legalisation of sex work.

It would be of great help if any sex workers, or buyers, could contact me so we can discuss the topic further.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I was joking. I don't need admin to inspect the landing gear too.

She it is then.

Also, I'm sure you were referring to a scholarship for excellence in academia? Or what did you mean?

Seriously though OP, if you want to know about the "buyers" you could do a lot worse than just reading this web site.

Would anyone be interested in talking to me further about the safety of sex workers/buyers on online platforms? Any help would be much appreciated

What aspects of safety do you have in mind? What dangers are you aware of that punters and prossies may encounter?

Lots of us on here can remember back to the days before local-paper adverts, for WG's, first appeared.

By "on-line platforms", do you mean AW?
AW is no more risky than the local-paper ads but is lots less risky than "street-work".

Risk is mainly set by where the WG operates. Rural home-counties are more or less risk free.
Many girls in such areas work from their homes, with no real security. In the old days they always had a "maid"

In about 2010 one old hand told me that AW had "changed her life". More well heeled clients and less expenses took her from "making a living" into clearing a lifetimes accumulated debt and then owning a smart flat in a South-coast resort.

Women in their 50's, that could not get safe work in a parlour any longer, now had a way to market themselves.

I don't know how online platforms have affected safety, but on the evidence of this thread they have made punters incredibly witty.

Have any sex workers ever thought about setting up sites similar to UK Punting - perhaps a reviewing/discussion site that serves the needs of and represents both sex workers and buyers? e.g. sex workers moderating sites - giving tips to both buyers and sellers, addressing safety issues to do with online advertisement,  such as hacked details, stalking, flagging up sex workers and buyers that are dangerous/ time wasters etc. Should sex workers be more in control of their businesses?

There seems to be plenty of one or the other - SAAFE of course is a great way for sex workers to interact and share. But there doesn't seem to be an equivalent of UK Punting that caters to women and men. UK Punting is the second largest online platform and forum for sex work discussions - I'm just wondering why there isn't a more prevalent site designed for the needs of both workers and buyers ?

There are plenty of forums that pretend to cater to both, but in reality they only care about the prostitutes and parlour / agency pimps because the site owners depend on their advertising money. In most cases - the owner is actually involved in prostitution / pimping, owns a parlour / agency, married to a prostitute and depends on her income, has never paid for sex in his life, etc.
They are as independent and unbiased as if a used car dealer was to create a used-car-buyer forum and pretend to be 'non-biased'.
And they are also irrelevant sites, they barely get 5% of this site's visitors or reviews.
It's like comparing Facebook and MySpace.

AdultWork?
Though it's just an advertising platform, they don't have a forum.

Precisely, I assumed she meant AW but would discount it for the same reason you mention. No discussions there.

If there was by chance a genuine site built to serve both sex workers and buyers, and fair to both, would people be interested - could it be as popular as UK Punting? Is it more appealing to be a part of something where all parties are happy and equally represented?

what type of information do you need, also do you need to talk in text or a voice interview?

Bit like saying what if a political party is created that represents all, and everyone can be happy.

That post is suspect. I'm beginning to wonder if you're a prostitute as well as a student...
