"King Charles is accused of insensitively saying to Earl Spencer, in the wake of Diana's death in 1997, that 'we'll forget her soon enough', according to excerpts published in the Daily Mail."

I don't believe a word of it.  It's highly unlikely that Prince Charles (as he then was) would have said such a thing to anyone – and inconceivable that he would have said it to Diana's brother, of all people.

Earl Spencer is a cunt of the first order.

In any case, why does he come up with this shit 30 years after the event?

So, there's now another traitor to go to the Tower, along with Harry Rotter and the Wicked Witch of Montecito.

Actually, on reflection, the Tower's too good for them.  I read the other day that Prince William is the owner of Dartmoor prison, now empty of convicts.  So let the fuckers rot there!

I can well believe that he said such a stupid thing.

In fact what Prince Charles said was, "Whatever 'in love' means."

Without re-running the whole saga of the marriage – God protect us from that! – Prince Charles's unfortunate comment simply gave the game away.  He was not "in love" with Lady Diana Spencer, and was too honest (or tactless) to pretend he was. It was in effect an arranged marriage.  They were ill-matched in every way.

We all sometimes semi-accidentally say things we regret afterwards.  Nonetheless, my view remains that it is inconceivable that Prince Charles made the comment that Earl Shit-Spencer claims he did.  It runs contrary to everything in the context of the time, and of the two men's relationship.

Diana's appeal was the fairly attractive woman who was completely unobtainable for Joe Bloggs.

By no means unattractive but I've banged dozens of SPs who if you put them side by side were way hotter as I suspect many on here are exactly the same.

Beauty is subjective but, whether you like it or not, Diana was considered one of the most attractive for a variety of reasons.

Obviously there are thousands of equally stunning girls on the planet and attraction isn't just physical appearance (as proved by Charlie boys choice) but it's one of the metrics used by the media et al.

Somebody once said 'show me a beautiful married woman and I show you a man who's fed up fucking her'

I've always liked Charles, as it happens. Diana was certainly beautiful; as Will Carling said, "well, you would, wouldn't you?" but Charles seemed to find her a high maintenance pain in the arse. Camilla can't compare when it comes to looks, but she sounds a bit of a giggle, and a terrific support for him.

Diana's brother, I think most of us would agree, is an utter cunt.

Apparently Spencer has a expensive divorce he needs to fund, he's not whiter than white as the media made him out to be. Before Diana’s death they were estranged, he banned her from Althorpe.

I try to avoid pronouncing on the rights and wrongs of other people's marriages.  Charles and Diana was a disastrous mismatch.  As in the case of most marriage break-ups, there were faults on both sides.  Charles was stiff, prematurely middle-aged, serious, intellectual, set in his ways.  Diana was young, fun-loving, not very bright.  There is a lot of evidence that she was also an absolute nightmare.

In one respect (perhaps more), Meghan is like her – both being addicted to fame and admiration.  Which can be very dangerous drugs.

Incidentally, Earl Shit-Spencer’s claims partake somewhat of the pot calling the kettle black – in view of the fact that, according to his third wife, Karen, he ended their 13-year marriage via a text message; and that he refused to talk to her in person or to explain, which she found cruel and inexplicable.

Diana, as far as the Royal were concerned, was a means of getting an heir, Prince Charles (as he was then) had a "duty" to provide one for continuity. She wasn't bad looking back in the day External Link/Members Only but Charle'swanted to play the field a bit more so Andrew Parker - Bowles beat him to it.
That doesn't give Earl Spencer the right to slag Charles off 35 years later, but, as said, he has a book to sell.

As well as physicalabuse, fagging certainly occasionally involved homosexuality.and/or sexual abuse. (And abuse of that nature continued after the fagging system was formally dismantled, in my experience.)

But it was normally more about having a servant/valet than about homosexuality.

Personally I don't find arguments for commonality in the etymology of public school "fag" and U.S. "faggot" convincing.

Diana's brother, I think most of us would agree, is an utter cunt.

A very fair analysis.

I can never understand why some people have it in for the King.  He is quite demonstrably a decent, conscientious, hard-working man, without (unlike Harry Rotter and Earl Shit-Spencer) a malicious bone in his body.

Yes, he has his eccentricities, but who wouldn’t if they lived the weird life he lives?  Which I wouldn’t take for a billion dollars.

And I think we do best not to pass judgement on his first marriage.  Some people think they know everything.  They don't.  We all tend to take one side or the other.  But it’s none of our business.

As for Spencer's stream of bile ... doubtless there’s a grain of truth in it, but it’s all filtered through his bitter and poisonous mind.

To take one small example.  My guess – and my guess is as good or as bad as the next man's – is that, if Princess Diana said that Charles was in love with his valet, it was a light-hearted remark, perhaps reflecting Charles's dependence on the man.  I don't for an instant think there was any shirt-lifting going on.  Just shirt-ironing.

In fact, whatever else you may say about the royal family, they've never been big on the love that dare not speak its name.   The last monarch who arouses suspicions in that direction was William III (1689–1702), and before that James I (1603–1625).

Among “non-monarchs”, Prince George, Duke of Kent – younger brother of Edward VIII and George VI – was almost certainly bi-sexual.

I do believe Charles the Adulterer said what Spencer said he did. His petulance has been observed on many occasions. If the mask slipped for a dodgy fountain pen, one can only imagine what he might say under significant pressure. The one bit of benefit of the doubt I'd give your King is that anyone with the lack of sensitivity he displayed with his "Whatever 'in love' means" comment shows what a dick he can be when he's not reciting a prepared, reviewed, edited and polished speech.

Full disclosure, I'm an Irish republican who would prefer that the royal family be dismantled.

Very droll, Mills and Bhuna, but if you read the post with which I started this thread, you will see that there is no reference there to the Charles and Diana marriage!  The point of this thread is Shit-Spencer’s disgusting behaviour.

I would add six points:

1.  Did Shit-Spencer consider the effect this book would have on “Diana’s boys”?  (But see Point 3 below.)

2.  Little though Diana liked Charles in the end, would she have wanted this?  My guess is not.

3.  Some well-informed commentators believe that there is an alliance between Shit-Spencer and Harry Rotter, the Celebrity Traitor.  Today’s Daily Express leads with claims from author Tom Bower that the earl is "undoubtedly" working with his nephew, the Duke of Sussex, to "damage" King Charles. The paper dubs the alleged pairing the "Spencer alliance".  It would appear that nothing would give Shit-Spencer and Harry Rotter more pleasure than to destroy King Charles, Prince William and indeed the British monarchy.

4.  I wrote yesterday in my Reply #19: “As for Spencer's stream of bile ... doubtless there’s a grain of truth in it, but it’s all filtered through his bitter and poisonous mind.”  But what good does this vile, vindictive stuff do?

5.  Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams notes that Shit-Spencer and Diana were reportedly estranged at the time of her death.

6.  Shit-Spencer has himself has been married four times – so this vicious hypocrite is himself the ne plus ultra of fucked-up marriages.

And that twat Spencer first class with hounors the one with a  great relationship record yes Charles might have said some odd things when Diana died and under the circumstances that happened but then again I've had two close people die on me suddenly an i have to say i lost it a bit, most normal people would..

Your first point is a fair one.  The term you quote is inappropriate.  Spencer is a disgusting human being, as are his younger nephew and the nephew's wife – and "Harry Rotter" and "the Wicked Witch of Montecito" are, I think, fair comment.  But "Shit-Spencer" is a regrettable coinage.

I don't think, however, it is fair to suggest that I am being "rabidly monarchist".  This thread is not a debate about whether the monarchy is a good or a bad thing, and I haven't expressed a view about this here (although you won't be surprised to learn that on balance I think the institution of monarchy works rather well for the United Kingdom).

My comments would be the same in respect of anyone who is subjected to horrible public assertions from a member of his own family.   This particular instance is especially bad because Spencer knows perfectly well that the King is unable to defend himself.

I do find this very curious. The Mail group were subjected to the most intensive scrutiny in their High Court case against Harry et al, and were found to have the most impeccable standards of journalism, unlike, for example, the BBC.

Yet they then pay top dollar to publicise this book by an embittered, malevolent man hell bent on trying to destroy the reputation of the man who spurned his sister.

We'll all have our differing views, I suppose; my own is that he and his publishers - by happy coincidence the same ones who published Harry's tome Spare - know that without these lurid headline making allegations the book won't sell, and that they're complete bollocks.

Offline Vice Admiral

In yesterday’s Times, Kevin Maher – the paper’s main film critic, who is Irish and a republican – had this to say:

But there also seems to be a targeted vindictiveness to some of his [Spencer's] book’s other accusations — that the King was once “in love” with his valet, or that he stamped his feet like a “petulant child” while complaining about the wait for his inheritance. For a 77-year-old monarch who is, this week, returning to hospital for scheduled cancer treatment, these attack lines seem primarily designed to embarrass, wound and humiliate, despite Spencer’s noble claims on truth and justice.

This would all be fine and fair game if it wasn’t for the creepy sense of self-serving hypocrisy that overshadows the earl’s avenging-brother routine. In short, how can we take seriously someone who, in 1998, in the documentary Diana: My Sister, the Princess, claimed that the worst imaginable crime was cashing in on a sibling’s death? “Can you imagine anybody making a profit out of their brother or sister’s death? I mean it’s so low it’s inconceivable… I’ll never profit from Diana’s death.”

Er, right. Awkward.

Offline Vice Admiral

In Monday's Times, Jenni Russell, always a moderate and balanced voice, wrote this in response to Spencer's "revelations":

It is selfish, spiteful and self-aggrandising. It is hard to see its purpose, other than to undermine the King and make his family feel freshly wretched while profiting from both. Spencer asserts he is just telling the truth, 29 years later, and that the royal rejoinder amounts to “gaslighting”. But there is reason to doubt that what he says he heard is what was said.

Spencer claims Charles sounded like “a lottery winner” on the morning of the tragedy. “I suspect the prince’s first reaction must have been to think more of how this event might free him to marry the woman he loved, rather than appreciating the loss of one he did not.” Both interpretations are belied by the evidence.

I talked to an impeccable source who was with Charles that day. He describes Spencer’s allegation as “wildly improbable. It’s not the Charles I saw.” That man was “in total shock, bereft and sad”. He hadn’t slept since news of the crash in the early hours and was overwhelmed by “sorrow, and concern. He was really worried about the children. They were at the forefront of everything.”

He is not a reliable reporter. He presents himself as her fierce champion when we know from published letters that the year before she died he was writing to her saying there had been “years of neglect on both sides”, that their relationship “was the weakest I have with any sister”, and accusing her of fickle friendship, manipulation and deceit.

The royals didn’t protect Diana post-divorce but nor did he. In 1993 she asked to rent a house she had known since childhood on his estate, situated behind his gates; he said yes, only to retract a fortnight later, claiming there would be too much police and press activity and he must put his wife and daughters first.

Offline Vice Admiral

From today's Times:

Earl Spencer said he “wasn’t setting out to do a hit piece on the King” with his controversial new memoir and claimed that the Palace was “gaslighting” him with its response.

He told ITV’s Lorraine: “I would like to explain I wasn’t setting out to do a hit piece on the King at all. The bits that have been included in the book are totally in context.”

He hinted that he had more damaging claims, saying: “If I wanted to write a hit piece on the royal family, I could do that. That’s not my job. My job in this book was to celebrate Diana.”

Nauseating hypocrisy and nastiness.  I don't know how the man can look at himself in the mirror in the morning.
