Recently had a thought a Conservative estimate of the amount I have spent in my brief stint of punting and it made my eyes water..

So, a bit O' Fun, would you Rather..

20 years+ of absolutely Amazing Punting Memories, but just a state Pension?

Or, an amazing Pensions portfolio but never had a punt in your life and never will?   :D

The same question could be asked of any activity on which you spend/waste/enjoy your disposable income. How much have you spent on holidays? sports? drinking? cars? etc. As long as you don't spend more than you can afford, then that is your choice. The extreme alternative is to absolutely minimise your outgoings and die with as much money as possible to leave to other people (or the government) to spend for you.

Comparison questions do my head in. Would you rather this, would you rather that.

Live your life. There an awful lot of folk out there who don’t. An awful lot of people who can’t and even worse an awful lot of people who never got the chance.

But in answer to the question.

I have done both. 🤷🏼 (actually a whole lot longer than 20 years) 😂

I think this old joke captures the issue:

A woman asks a man - "do you drink beer?"
Man: Yeah.

Woman: How many beers a day?

Man: Usually about 3.

Woman: How much do you pay per beer?

Man: $5.00, including the tip.

Woman: And how long have you been drinking?

Man: About 20 years, I suppose.

Woman: So a beer costs $5 and you have 3 beers a day which puts your spending each month at $450. In one year, it would be approximately $5400 …correct?

Man: Correct.

Woman: If in 1 year you spend $5400, not accounting for inflation, the past 20 years puts your spending at $108,000, correct?

Man: Correct.

Woman: Do you know that if you didn't drink so much beer, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 20 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?

Man: Do you drink beer?

Woman: No.

Man: What color is your Ferrari?

In reality, most people are auto enrolled into a pension by their employer. Which is now a legal requirement.

I was already auto enrolled in the late 80s when I started punting in Soho walk-ups.

It might be more relevant for punters to consider how much they would now have if they had spent twenty years investing their punting money into a stocks and share ISA or a high interest savings account.

I'd rather go somewhere in the middle, like most people!

The important thing is to remember to have some fun in life. Enjoying yourself doesn't need to mean self-destructive, reckless hedonism.

Man: What color is your Ferrari?

Ha, I love that. Everyone has their vices.

I grew up with nothing and prioritised accumulation of wealth for security.

Now, looking back, should I have spent more on pleasure?

Undoubtedly the answer is yes, but in my defence, you don't know what you don't know.

I don't care, life each day as if it's your last, because one day it will be.

If I had all the money I'd spent on beer, I'd spend it on beer.

Fortunately have had 12 wonderful years of punting, and a bloody pension

The first option for sure… fuck pensions, I’ve opted out of that nonsense long time ago…

I wish I had punted longer and had less money now. Who wants to leave a stash to your offspring. Screw that.

I’m at 200 now and my goal is to match Gene Simmonds from Kiss.  :yahoo:
