A "safe" street scene

Look, before everyone gets on their high horse, I'm asking out of curiosity after some time abroad to see if there's anything similar in the UK or more ideally Scotland

Basically, those of you who read my review of Barcelona know, while I didn't partake, I did wander around a street well known for it's hookers. It wasn't sketchy or sleezy or anything, although the sun probably has a lot to do with that. But girls were flaunting their goods, kids were playing about, everyone seemed happy and laughing about, and while as I said, I didn't partake, it was fun to just wander around, strike up a conversation and see all the skin on show, minus the obvious pimps

Is there anything like this over here, but without the pimps standing around?

Curb crawling / picking escorts up on the street is one of the few things that's illegal and will get a punter arrested and end up with a criminal record.

It is illegal to pick up prostitutes on the streets in Barcelona as well as it is in the UK, but since you have asked this question I would have a guess and say that you would not care

Of course there is a RLD scene in most large cities in the UK… unfortunately 99% of them are minging.

Middlesbrough used to be rife for it until the police had a clampdown and started publicising the names of the punters they arrested. So not only did they get a criminal record but they got to be in the papers so everyone knew. Never seen one in Newcastle though.

I don't know about the North East, But in East London I think punters get a slap on the wrist and a fine but if punters keep doing this then they get a criminal record. It doesn't tend to happen to their first time.

It's the law you don't know about, a caution or slap on the wrist as you call it or a fine is still a criminal record and will show up on a DBS check, as will any arrest even if NFA is recorded.

I’ve not heard of that before > names being publicised… did it happen decades ago? These days you would simply not be able to get away with naming names.

At my neck of woods, East Midlands, There are still 3-4 known locations in Leicester city where the girls do come out… but it is very slim pickings… 3-5 girls max. I do not participate but always have a look when I’m at them areas just out of curiosity and whatnot

They did something similar in Luton years ago after complaints from the Muslim Community - they stopped after senior male officials from a nearby Mosque got caught.

I remember well over two decades ago the Police adopted another tactic, which was to record vehicles 'cruising' in a red light area of Preston. They would then send a letter to the registered keeper, saying that the vehicle had been seen behaving suspiciously in an area notorious for street prostitution etc and suggesting they should consider avoiding the area if possible.

One aspect of the deterrent nature of this was the possibility of someone else at the address seeing/reading the letter etc. It was a simple process which I recall proved effective at the time.

“Safe” street prostitution is relative, over the years this can have been through “toleration zones”. (Pretty much the same can go for massage shops, parlours etc)

The workers know where they are allowed, the police and social services know what’s going on, gentle patrols can occur where the police drive through and may stop for a chat
But when it generates problems such as condoms and needles left around, too close to residents etc or cars cruise around propositioning any woman at a bus stop etc then action gets taken

At an address if it isn’t causing complaints in the neighborhood then there’s an advantage that the police know where things happen and know where to go and check up on the people there
A lone worker in a flat is more legal than a couple of workers,  but remains more vunerable due to being alone, so a couple of workers at a single address may be tolerated for the safety element
