It would be somewhat ironic if both Newcastle and Sunderland go down only to be replaced by Middlesbrough .
I wondered when Newcastle, Sunderland, and Middlesbrough were last together in the Premier League. Answer: during the 2008–09 season, at the end of which Newcastle and Middlesbrough were relegated, while Sunderland finished 16th.
The same season, Brighton finished 13th in League One. Today? Third in the Premier League. OK, it’s only seven games into the season, but particularly impressive are the figures for goal difference: Brighton are on +18; next come Manchester City on +12 – and after that Arsenal on a meagre +6.
In the 2009/10 season Leeds (2nd), Southampton (7th) and Brentford (9th) were also in League One.
What a difference 17 years make!
