I suppose the effectivness of  a fine depends on one thing

will it count for FFP purposes ?

a large enough fine could stop them buying players or even make them sell a few

I recorded the Georgia v NI game.
Just watched it.

Great end to the game for NI. Didn’t think the ref or VAR was on their side to be honest.

Peanuts to a club like Man City, should be a massive points deduction which would mean relegation from the Premier league

According to Bill Edgar in yesterday’s Times, since November 2024 the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has staged more Beyoncé concerts (six) than home league wins (five).

Those five victories have come over the past 36 home league matches.  Since the league’s formation in 1888 no other top-division team have had such a sequence while remaining in the top division throughout the run in question.

I love that kind of statistic. I remember that in the Spring of 2002, late in that season, Robbie Fowler became the leading scorer at Filbert Street with four goals. This despite the fact he didn't play for Leicester. He'd scored a hat trick for Liverpool, than been transferred to Leeds, with whom he scored again.

Two years ago I had the privilege of watching every single minute of Leicester City making history by losing nine consecutive home league games without scoring. A feat never before achieved at any level in the history of English professional football. In added time of the ninth game, in which we were only losing 0-1 to Liverpool, our defender Wout Faes - who not only looked like Art Garfunkel but played like Art Garfunkel - nearly fucked it up but to the relief of the home crowd his looping header sailed wide.

....and to think that for many years Leicester City were Liverpool's bogey team
The number of times I used to stand in the kop and watch Gordon Banks perform miracles in goal  :(

And it's not just about whether other teams such as Man Utd; Arsenal or Liverpool would have won the league so now get awarded those titles as it was pointed out that some clubs may have been relegated if City beat them.

There were 3 occasions when Liverpool came 2nd to Manchester City when they won the premier league
Some fans will probably argue that Liverpool should be given those league titles.
I'm not so sure I'd want that. They'd probably not be regarded as proper league titles by many.

The charges are being appealed so how long will that take to conclude.  :unknown:

Much much lesser + historic before the current owners [tho they subsequently did the hotel & wendyball fiddles - green lighted by the PL ]
+ the new owners got rid of their ruskie owner which looks good politically [tho things still rumbling on]
& City did everything in their powers to deny deny deny

Self reporting is like the rozzers when one / more of their tooled up officers drop someone.  Nothing ever comes of this  :hi:  Have a bit of an investigation then bin it too right

There was some bloke versed in these matters on Talk Sport who went through the technicalities
No chance of an appeal getting anywhere
City are trying to prevent publication of the 700 page summary which will show everyone what cheating fuckers they are
IMO if City really go for an appeal they should receive an additional punishment when the findings come out with the same result

What is needed is a sporting punishment so other clubs benefit from this
- relegation  by a few leagues
- a transfer ban
- binning out their accumulated titles - Prem FA Cup & Carabao etc
The PL giving them a massive fine which they trouser means nowt [if just a fine the Saudis will be  :yahoo:]

Manchester City charges latest: Premier League clubs 'planning legal action' after reports of guilty verdicts

[no spying  :D] Leeds took legal action against Everton who were found guilty of financial cheating
On the basis that Everton finished above them
Meaning Leeds lost out financially £sky money per place
Everton settled out of court & we all know what this means

City are gonna get clobbered right left & centre there are lawyers seeing blood in the water & what does this attract ?
It will be relentless

City will have spent £millions on very expensive legal advice
Barristers on their side
Me thinks not one of them advised like 'look you are up shit creek without a paddle' best to admit to the offences co-operate & face a much lesser punishment

City appear to think that those running the investigation not impartial how to really really fuck off the PL suggesting they are biased, good luck with that !

Offline Jumping Jack Flash

Stripping them of titles and cup wins is pretty meaningless, whoever gets retrospective trophies will always have an asterisk against that season in the record books.

Demote them, put them under a transfer embargo for four seasons and hit them with a heavy fine. The PL must send a really strong message here but I wonder how the TV companies will react to their product missing one of their jewels though, future broadcast deals might not be as lucrative.

I do feel sorry for the genuine City fans though, the guys that were there in the 90’s when they were in the old division three. I’ve no sympathy for the plastics who jumped on the bandwagon of a supposedly successful club though.

The titles don't have to be awarded retrospectivly to the teams who finished runners up to them. When cyclist Lance Armstrong had his seven Tour de France titles stripped from him for cheating the record books show no winner from 1999 to 2005. Not ideal but a lot less controversal than awarding titles retrospectively.  When Saracens Rugby Union team were found to have broken payment regulations they were given a massive points deduction which  guaranteed their relegation from the Rugby Premiership. A one point deduction for each offence meaning a 114 point deduction. A team like them are capable of reaching 90 points this season so deduct those  points from this season and whatever  points carry over to the following season when they are in the Championship  :unknown:

I agree.  Tinkering around with who might otherwise have won titles or cups has too many complexities and imponderables and “What if’s?” and would in any case be a fairly empty gesture.  The open-top bus parades have already taken place.

I would favour – as indeed has been widely suggested – the same punishment as Glasgow Rangers, who were relegated to Scottish League Two for their own transgressions.

A pleasing incidental result of this would be that this would do wonders for the gate receipts of Fleetwood Town, Colchester United and Accrington Stanley once a season.

Fessing up would have been a much better option and then actually cooperating with the investigations, a bit like pleading guilty in court to save the time / expense of a trial and to spare the victims family having to go through all the shit.
I'm thinking they probably hoped they could keep kicking the can down the road in the hope it would go on so long it would h=get forgotten about and the PL would give it up as a bad job with a fine (small for the owners) on a few charges that they would publicly disagree with but pay to get closure

I do wonder how much of this decision on their direction was down to the legal team and how much down to the owner who culturally still thinks he's in Abu Dhabi and can just get what he wants due to being super rich and owning the people who make the judgement  :unknown:

You can't even limit it to the period the charges relate to as they still had the same manager and many of the same players. They had the income that their "success" gave them and they had the general clout of a big successful club. All based on cheating. Everything they have done since the Saudis took over is tainted by this.

Had a look back but couldn't find it however I did previously post about how many points City won the league by and who could benefit from XYZ points deductions, from memory Man Utd stood to get 1 more title; Arsenal was 2 or 3 and Liverpool 3 or 4 however while transferring those titles to other clubs may give fans a bit more bragging rights in reality do the fans or clubs really want the * next to their win with all the accusations of not actually having won it or having been gifted it etc.

Almost seems like a hollow victory to transfer it and that moment of joy / adulation / glory has been missed for the clubs / players and fans

I don't think they will give titles to teams finishing 2nd, but they should be stripped of them anyway, now they are going to appeal, we are going to wait a few more years probably  :scare:
Football is fuckin gone now, all the money and greed, bending the rules and clubs owned by billionaires and foreign states, it is very nice watching it, but when you look behind what is happening is not very attractive.
Used to like Serie A until the match fixing came to light(which is completely different level with this one), but once that shit came to light I never watched it since.

Mentioning that Everton [for their cheating] were forced to pay £35m to Burnley as they were relegated with this being in relation to one club & one season
On a different dimension for City scope & duration

On the latter [real not fake] sponsors paying more

Since I posted the above, I’ve read the coverage of the Manchester City story in today's Times Sport – five pages (admittedly with three very large photos).  I hadn't till then followed the story at all closely.  It’s profoundly shocking.

Martin Samuel, the paper’s chief football writer, pulls no punches.  He appears to think that City should lose their titles, although he falls short of categorically declaring as much.

It’s the sheer brazen effrontery of it all.  For anyone like me who hasn’t studied the case closely, here are two of the most jaw-dropping of City’s “crimes”:

1.  Roberto Mancini signed two contracts on the same day in 2009: £1.45 million a year to manage City, and £1.75 million a year as a “consultant” to City’s sister club Al Jazira, involving a minimum of four days’ coaching a year.

2.  Of £59.5 million supposedly paid as sponsorship money by Etihad Airways, all but £8 million came from City’s owners.

I doubt if any football story has ever made me more angry – but I fear that the punishment meted out may prove to be inadequate.

People in charge of running the club should be booted out of Football

Got to be this.
Abramovic and Mansour have ruined football, forcing so many clubs to overstretch themselves to try to compete.
Chelsea had the luxury of being able to blame it on the previous regime, but city's owners have been a complete disgrace in this process.

And some clowns think the solution is to give the green light to other nation state owned clubs to spend what they want.

Kane was a bit unfortunate with the penalty, he slipped just as he was about to kick it. Can't understand why Tuchel took Gordon off though, his substitutions are puzzling at times just like against Argentina in the World cup.

City have been doing everything in their power to obstruct & delay the process
On the basis of as mentioned previously kicking the can down the road hoping interest wanes
City misread the room on this [the last paragraph of @BR's #1121 deffo the case]

The amount of PL senior management time absorbed will have been substantial
The PL also having very expensive legal teams clocking up substantial fees along the way
Which it is highly likely City will be paying most if not all of in addition to their whopping legal bill

There'll be more legal discussion [more ££] on the level of PL fees which City have to pay

Yeah i'm thinking that if the 115 charges + supporting evidence was made public then even a lot of the people trying to defend them of keep an open mind would have to step back and say "They did what" and what and what etc.........

I never had an issue with City when they started winning stuff as they'd been in the wilderness for so long however it was starting to get a bit of the same old same old in recent years, I think once this is fully done and dusted if everything is out in the open then City could well be a team that Neutrals love to hate, dare I say they may topple another club from their perch on that front  :D
