I thinks its time for my first visit (purely precautionary, no symptoms).

After some googling, Whittall Street Clinic seems an OK option. Anybody been there or have any other recommendations?

Over the past few years I've been to whittall street clinic a few times per year. I find the very professional, discreet, and non judgmental. I would just recommend to book in advanced, and be prepared to be in there for an hour minimum.

I go to Russell's Hall (Sandwell nearest BR) - drop in and you can be seen within 40 mins usually, they ask you questions, swabbed, then blood and urine samples, 3-hour round trip from home.

Thanks guys. How anonymous are these places? I know results are via text but do they require your real name, DoB, address etc?

It won't get onto your GP record (ie used by health insurance etc), a friend who works in the lab says that the PID details are anonymised ie changed to just a number or something, if they come from the GUM clinic.  I asked about this when I had my course of Hep B (which you might get texted about until the antibodies have developed) and the GP said it would be put down as "lifestyle choice" or similar - they probably thought I was gay or something!

Otherwise just give them your details, no problem. the individual clinic will then keep their own records and be able to monitor your history.

There've been quite a few threads recently on STIs and GUM clinics, so thought I'd bump this to add my experience. Hopefully knowing what to expect will encourage some that are thinking about it to go ahead and get tested.

Since asking the original question, I've now been to Whittall Street Clinic three times (which felt right for me due to my punting frequency).

How it works:

They run 3 walk in sessions per day. 9am, early afternoon and late afternoon (can't remember the times). The walk in sessions have limited slots and are in very high demand. My first attempt, I arrived an hour early and was turned away as the slots had already been taken.

You can book an appointment online. This is what I do and what I recommend doing. I usually book ~ a week in advance. The location is walking distance from the Bullring/New Street so I book for a day I know I'll be in the city centre. I have always been seen bang on time. Appointments take ~45 minutes.

You fill in a form on a touchscreen computer in a private kiosk, and this determines who you see first, nurse or doctor.

If you have no symptoms, you'll see a nurse. You'll be asked a few questions, have a blood sample taken and give a urine sample. They also do instant (but not 100% accurate) HIV and syphillis tests, which involve a small amount of blood taken from your finger. If you want to speak to a doctor, you can do.

All the details you provide can be fake except for a way for them to contact you with results. I have given a fake name and dob. They don't need a door number, so I have given my real postcode. And my real mobile number- those with partners who check their phones may want to use their punting number as they do text you appointment reminders and the result, something like 'Your test results on -date- for HIV, gonorrhea, chlamydia and syphillis were all normal'.

I got a text from a different clinic that just said "your results are all clear". Rather easier to explain away than a long list of STIs!

Get a life!!....FFS.

The peace of mind a set of normal results gives is worth the inconvenience IMO. And you can't treat what you don't know you have, which leads to complications for you, and risk of spreading to prossies, therefore also punters. Meaning the more of us that get tested, the safer punting is for everyone, including you.

Just bear in mind that if you do give your genuine details and you test positive for some of the more serious ailments, then can contact your doctor. I gave false details (although I'm fairly confident that they worked that out when I didn't respond to my false name being called ), but did some research into making sure the address actually existed, address of nearby doctors surgery and that it was in the catchment area of the clinic. Probably over the top but better to be safe and all that.

At Whittall Street, it's so simple. The only details they need are name, dob, post code and contact number. Nothing else is required. They can all be fake, except contact number.

On the website, they state that you may use false details, and they won't ask for ID- just remember/note down the name and dob you give for future visits.

Says what? if you have something to say then spit it out.
Don't forget to write it down first so you have time to type as its quite obvious that mummy only allows you minimal internet play-time.
