Three people have been charged following their arrests on Wednesday night (15 October) on suspicion of modern slavery and human trafficking offences.

Khondakar Hasan,39, from Moreton Walk in Leicester, Liu Xu Hopkins, 55, and Benjamin Hopkins, 56, both from High Street, Staple Hill, South Gloucestershire, have all been charged with three offences:

Conspiracy in Human Trafficking
Conspiracy to Control Prostitution for Gain
Conspiracy to Transfer Criminal Property
They appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court this afternoon (17 October) and have been remanded in custody.

Three other people, a woman from London and two men from Bury St Edmunds, have been released on police bail in connection with the investigation.

Yesterday, officers from the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU) were supported by police teams from Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Suffolk, Thames Valley and Cambridgeshire forces to carry out warrants at seven ‘massage parlours’, with seven women offered safeguarding support as a result.

DCI Adam Smith from SWROCU said: “This investigation started due to public concerns raised to Wiltshire Police about two premises in Chippenham.

“Community intelligence is so important – officers searching the premises yesterday received so much positive feedback that action’s been taken – so our plea is to keep such information coming.”

Two closure orders have been granted to protect vulnerable people in Chippenham.

Today, (15/10) officers from the local neighbourhood team applied at Swindon Magistrates Court for closure orders for addresses in Loyalty Street and Little Englands.

The applications were made due to concerns the occupants at both addresses were being exploited.

The orders will remain in place at both addresses for a three-month period and will prevent anyone from entering the properties other than the named occupants, emergency services or housing association representatives.

We have successfully obtained two closure orders for premises in Chippenham town centre following warrants conducted yesterday (16/10).

An investigation into suspected modern slavery and human trafficking saw six people arrested and seven women safeguarded following the warrants carried out in Chippenham, Gloucestershire, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Reading. Three people have now been charged and remanded in custody.

The investigation, led by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU), initially began in Chippenham by local neighbourhood officers following concerns about the services being offered at premises in the town.

Today (17/10), Sgt Jamie Ball attended Swindon Magistrates Court where he successfully obtained closure orders for the premises at 7 Market Place and 48A New Road.

I think for the girls it could be a case of "out of the frying pan and into the fire"...

What on earth does this mean: "Seven women are currently with specially trained officers to establish their safeguarding needs"

Surely their needs are a roofs over their heads, food, clothes, money etc.... The same needs that we all have.  Are the police/local councils going to provide?

As we know, many massage shop girls can't get by without google translate.  How are they going to navigate the complexities of modrn day life in the UK?  Are they going to get "normal" jobs?  Where are they going to live, long term?  Will they be deported?  Will there be trouble for them or their families back home?

Human trafficking is a truly terrible thing, but I for one, would not like my safeguarding needs to be in the hands of the authorities.

It means that seven women are currently with specially trained officers to establish their safeguarding needs.

You do understand the meaning of safeguarding for these women in the context of these raids?

They are designated victims and the first stage of the safeguarding process will involve the Police?

Hmm, I wonder what the 2nd, 3rd, etc stages will be.

Old Bill might like to cast themselves in the role of white saviours, but you can bet it's not going to end well for those women. Police officers are more likely to be raping victims, rather than safe-guarding them.  And no amount of self righteous, sanctimonious posturing is going to alter that. You can bet  those women were sending money back home, or paying off debts. Now what?

It's a classic catch 22.

Well, thank God the women are now in safe hands and their futures secured.

I would really like to see the papers give an update on the women in six months and then twelve months. But it won't happen. Once the headline grabbing story of the raids and any trials are over, that will be end to it.

No- that is garbage. Notwithstanding rotten apples, Police are not more likely to be abusers.

Whose hands then?

Exactly. By private citizens; charidees? Screened how and by whom, and with what assurances?

If the women are trafficked and working in 'chinese' parlours, then they're almost certainly foreign nationals brought here illegally - and, having failed to prevent their entry to the country in those circumstances, the correct next step for UK authorities is to return them to their home countries. We've neither the resources nor the moral obligation to make the exploited peoples of the world British citizens, and purport to grant them 'safety'.

It's incumbent on us, as punters, to avoid places or adverts which bear the likely hallmarks of trafficking (and, better still - to actively report suspicions we have) - and that includes avoiding nationalities and ethnicities that are a greatest risk of being trafficked.

AFAIK the Salvation Army have a contract nationally to provide care while the women's circumstances are resolved, though some police forces seem to turn them over to special refuge schemes

you are a complete idiot if you really think that. there are about 170,000 police in the uk and of course there will be a few wrong uns amogst them but for your statement to be right that means 85000 of them! yes, right! So you are obviously a police hater - so if your mother, sister, wife or daughter is being assulted by a group of men who could easily overpower you by yourself, do you mean to say that you wouldn't call the police for help?

If you look at the google reviews for China Star Therapy you will see that the two main people have reviewed this place and also other places.

I dread to think how many chinese massage shops there are dotted around the country there are at least 5 i can think of within a 15 minute drive of me let alone the private houses. If you then add on the thai massage shops its probably double . It seems like an impossible situation for the authorities to act on / check

The annoying thing is that this gradual influx of Chinese sex workers, organised by Chinese OCGs/TRIADs (or whatever you want to call them) should be no secret. Anyone who's read my postings on here may be aware that I've been flagging it since 2019......it's been known to the UK authorities for the last six/seven years, was secretly raised by the Home Office as a rising problem - and then studiously ignored. They were aware of the problem, flagged it, did nothing about it. No central plan, no finance to pay for the required policing and immigration checks. It was almost as if the then government were too scared to offend China.
We now have a situation where more and more illegals are coming into the country and ending up in sex work, being exploited by groups that are often using them as fronts to launder money from more traditional gangland activities such as drugs and protection rackets.

I am not a punter, so have zero experience from that end. I have a suspicion price isn't necessarily an absolute indicator, I know of genuinely independent SPs who operate right across the price range, and also one or two who have a wide range of working hours. I could be wrong. I am aware some punters would be horrified to be engaging with an SP who is trafficked, coerced or forced, but based on things I have read, snippets heard, even said to myself I have a good idea some do not give a stuff.

I don't get it. If you go to a parlour where someone speaks little or no English, how can you do the most basic due diligence of asking whether they're there willingly? Spelling it out - if you have sex with someone who has been trafficked, coerced and possibly threatened with who knows what, there's not much difference between that and rape.

I’m sorry but chances are higher in these situations, also girls who speak little to no English operating from these places just screams dodgy imo.

I may be wrong but not personally willing to take the chance.

100% agree and so does the law, but guys get away with it because of what someone else mentioned here that there’s limited resources to police it but that seems to be changing. Also you can’t be sure of age and that’s just not worth the risk to save a few notes. Hope none of these men get caught up in a case…….

I've always thought that if the police wanted to clean up this area then the biggest resource they have is.......us.

The ability to have a card with some simple translated phrases. "Do you need help?" "Are you here against your will?" "Do you want me to contact the authorities?" which can be pointed at is simple.

The biggest question I have is not whether our authorities are interested in solving the "problem" but are the Chinese authorities. It was mentioned earlier in this thread about what is the outcome for the women concerned and their families, but surely the Chinese authorities are the ones with the biggest influence here, rather than the UK?

Offline midspunter

I think the biggest influence isn't the Chinese authorities, it's the customers. If there's no demand, there'll be no supply. There are plenty of other places to buy sex where the women are in clearly control of their situation.

Chinese authorities don't care a shit about their women being exploited. As far as they're concerned, the more the better. Increased numbers means more western funds repatriated back to China. With a population their size, even a  few hundred thousand getting trapped into modern slavery in the west is just a rounding error in the stats, nothing they see a need to worry about. It's not as if sex workers in China get treated any better - there's a significant level of trafficking of women inside China

Exactly.

I punted a Hungarian girl many years ago. I asked her why calls to her were being redirected out of the country (I could tell by the ring tone)

She told me that she was working to pay off her boyfriends debts back home and her earnings were being monitored.

Another was a Romanian girl I arranged to meet. I walked because I wasn't comfortable with the situation when I arrived. I got a call from the pimp just after I left, checking that I had actually left and asking why.
