Could well have been someone trying a "Walk in".

I had a similar experience in Nuneaton recently. I had a half hour appointment at 8pm (shop closed at 9pm). As I was about to leave the buzzer on the front door sounded. The therapist looked at me with a worried look on her face, she opened the door a few inches and tried to work out who/what he wanted. He seemed to be implying he had an appointment. She eventually managed to dissuade him and he went away. I waited  with her for a few minutes as she was obviously concerned/scared.

So don't  make assumptions. Nothing is obvious.
