a thread's view count - does marking as "read" increase it?

so sometimes on a board there are a number of new unread comments - some might be of interest and i open them and read, others i am not interested in so just tick the general "mark as read" box.

But by doing that, does it count as that thread has been "viewed"?

for example, about 2 weeks ago i asked a question on the SW regional Seeking thread. since then,  the thread "viewed" count has increased by well over 2000 but no one has made a comment - neither to my question or about any other seeking issue. so 2000 plus guys have clicked into the thread to read but not make any comment at all? Or have they? Or is it just that they have marked it as "read"?

so have well over 2000 guys looked at the thread in the last couple of weeks or not? if yes , then surely it's strange that so many guys were interested enough to click into the thread to read but not contribute anything to it at all. I am not so much thinking about getting an answer to my question in the thread but more anlong the lines of "is anything happening in the SW area on Seeking" - it is in most other regions but nothing at all in the SW??

I don't think I've looked at it. When I don't reply to a question it's because I don't know the answer. Would be surprised if at least 1 person out of 2000 doesn't know something though.

or have something else to contribute to the thread! Hence why i am wondering if the "views" actually mean that - ie opened the thread and looked at (at least) the last couple of posts)

The total page views for the site for August was over 28 million, so 2000 is a low figure and should be accurate.
Most of them will be genuine views rather than 'marked as read'.

In any case this function only applies to logged in members and the majority of page views are likely to be non members who even if they wished to reply could not.
