This topic was raised some time ago probably late 2023 by Blackpool Rock. It involved an incident during the Sheffield steelers v Nottingham Panthers ice hockey game which resulted in Nottingham Panthers player Adam Johnson loosing his life after getting his throat slashed by a skate during the game. It now appears that there will be no charges of manslaughter against Sheffield Steelers Mathew Petgrave over the incident. Petgrave spent 17 months on bail whilst the incident was investigated. The crown prosecution service has decided that there is realistically no prospect of a conviction after reviewing the case. It was later decided that compulsory neck guards would be bought into the sport for players at the lower level of the sport but not at the top level ( the Elite ice Hockey league) in this country,  only a recommendation for players to wear them.

Now that CPS have decided there won't be a prosecution, there will be an inquest. The coroner may order a prevention of future deaths report, in which case the governing body would need to justify its decision not to make neck guards mandatory. I suspect the sport's insurers will have something to say on the subject too, as they have in rugby in relation to head injuries caused by high tackles which have led to rule changes in professional rugby league.

Couldn’t really see any other outcome here just a tragic accident in a risky sport.
